Enright has been played deeper and forced to play a more negative role, he is an automatic choice.

I know he has been forced to play deeper and that has affected him, but Enright is no automatic selection.

We have about 26-27 players (when fit) to squeeze into the 22. Only the best 8-9 players are automatics selections and I certainly don't see Boris fitting in to that group. The remaining 15-19 players are going to be in and out of the side depending on injury, fitness, form and the opposition of the week.

On current form, I'm finding it hard to justify keeping Enright in when there are other players in better form and deserving of a chance.

And by no means am I saying he's been terrible. That's the thing about this side, a small drop in form is amplified such is the competition for spots.

I would leave Lonergan in only because we may need some insurance down back to play on Tredrea. He is in reasonable form atm and potentially may push Taylor aside pretty easily one-on-one.

Q: Why can't Harley take that role on board in Scarlett's absence?

A: He would get his ass torn out like every other time he plays on a key forward.

Next week will be a bad week to play Port Adelaide, they will get a grilling like never before this week. We are out of form and lacking key defenders. Ebert is back, S.Burgoyne is back. I don't like it.

Enright is a great example of a player who is very useful when we are not under the pump, Wojcinski and Mackie also slot into that category. Why? They are almost exclusively offensive players and lack physical presence / sound defensive pressure.

They will be tested out in the next few weeks with Scarlett out. Especially if our team continues to play far from its best. You can only successfully run off your man when your side are winning the majority of the footy. These 3 get shown up consistently by their respective opponents when the chips are down... are not true defenders in my book. Mackie is deplorable in a one on one constest... I don't care what he weighs, he's too tall for his weight and a high center of gravity means you go down lots.. and he gets grounded by the slightest of bumps. He isn't a future Milburn. Lacks the mongrel and the ability.

I'd agree with this. Also with Ebert and Burgoyne back in, you'd hope Hunt would come in for Geelong.

Enright and Wojak are safe I'd think, Enright has been quiet this year, but he's been quiet playing deeper, I thought he was good on Friday night, he's had a more accountable year in my opinion.

Mackie is the one that interests me, I don't think he's ever going to gain the weight, much like Robery Murphy of the dogs, but Thompson talks him up as huge value to the team, and even mentioned him doing a great job in the 2nd half last week.

Anyways, I don't think Gamble gets a game over Hawkins, but is there a chance both play?

For me it's still a midfield/defensive game this week so the changes are-

Out- Scarlett, Byrnes, Prismall
In- Taylor, Hunt, Selwood

Swap Prismall for Varcoe if it's wetter than expected, Stokes has to go back to play deeper forward this week...

After waching port v carlton last night, i think the only changes Geelong have to make is

out: Scarlett
in: RAIN!!!

Which would make perfect sense, as Harley isn't a key defender anymore. He hasn't been for 3 years. It's like asking why Brad Johnson doesn't play on the wing and get 25 touches anymore - because he's now a permanent forward. He's evolved and so has Harley. Again stressing why Taylor should never have been dropped, and needs to come back with or without Scarlett.

My defensive matchups would be Taylor on Westhoff, Milburn on Tredrea, and Harley on Motlop. Hunt would come back in if fit, and I guess go to Ebert. Ling will no doubt tag S.Burgoyne as normal.

Port will undoubtedly be tough opposition, but put things into perspective. They couldn't beat Carlton despite being 30 points up at three quarter time. They're a good side, but they are very beatable - with or without Scarlett.

Here's some thoughts I've had on the matter:

1. Worst game I've seen from Wojak in a number of years. Was too pumped up, easily beaten by his opponent and mouthing off worse than Milburn.

2. Brynes. Did some good things, then also some bad mistakes. Touching SJ's goal in the dying seconds was laughable. I don't mind the guy when he kicks goals and does his job, but on a few occasions last night he looked very ordinary.

3. Lonners. It's fair to say he isn't an AFL backman anymore. Though he did his job IMO in the forward line, kicked a couple. Maybe an improvement could be made at ground level where he's a bit ordinary.

4. SJ. Just kick the goal at stick height FFS. You are annoying the shit out of everyone. Sure looks great when it comes off, but stop playing about it nearly cost us a game. Secondly, this team stuff is great when it works, however when they pass if off in the forward 50 it often gets overturned for a score the other way. It's one of the reasons why Hawkins is out IMO, they should lineup when within 30-45. Keep it simple stupid.

5. Blake. Nearly everytime the Kanga's took the ball away from the centre due to Blake not making the contest they got a goal. Blake has to get to the contest no matter what. The main reason why Ottens was put into the ruck late in the game was because he creates body contact, therefore at least getting to the contest.

Stokes, Mackie and Harley - Starting to struggle. Though I disagree about what some are saying about Harley. His marking touch isn't what it used to be, but he often is taking a guy who is streets in front of him in speed and ground play, yet he often beats those smaller opponents. For those few that are having a go at him from last nights game, Scarlett and Milburn were also towelled up by their taller opponents, yet no-one is mentioning that.

Positives:

Varcoe. Tackles and goals were significant. Some touch around the ground also looked good. Love the way he hits the pack at speed, so when he does get the ball no-one can touch him. Great tonight.

Moons - Finally back into his rough-house best. If he gets suspended like some are inferring, the league is as soft as butter.

Ablett - Thank god he is on our side.

Prismall - Probably about 80-90 percent of his disposals were lace out and on the money. Was impeccable last night. A couple of his kicks to the forward line were some of the best passes I've seen in a while. Great stuff.

My outs: Brynes, Scarlett
Ins: Taylor, Hunt.

Good post. Agree with most of that.

He wasn't, he was rested. It was a good decision as he was clearly looking tired.

Agree, and while Byrnes is classed as a forward and Prismall a midfielder, I don't give a dam. Prismall's disposal into the forward line was impressive on fri night, much better than Byrnes has ever managed.
The big difference between Byrnes and Prismall is awareness for mine. To put it simply, Prismall is a footballer with a football brain, Byrnes is/was an athlete who developed himself into a footballer. Byrnes has trouble making decisions and on a lot of occasions and will undo his good work with stupid decision making.

Reality - Prismall is going to pack his bags at the end of '08, and all the power to him. If any of you boo him while he's playing against us in the future, shame on you. ;)

At least it looks as if Tenace is totally out of the picture. Could be worse.

A balanced and reasonable post, MartyK. What is the world coming to?

Mooney Gets Off

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/afl/story/0,26576,23836008-19742,00.html

* Contact between Geelong's Cam Mooney and North Melbourne's Scott Thompson from the second quarter of Friday's game was assessed. The force of the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence.

+

Geelong's Paul Chapman and North Melbourne's Michael Firrito have been given $900 fines for wrestling.

Nice pay packet for a charity, they do still give the fines to charity right?

Geez I hope Harley is not on Motlop. Please Mark don't even consider it. I'm worried about our lack of talls down back and when we play say Hawthorn for instance who gets Buddy and Roughy. Teams are loading up their forward lines like the Roos the other night and clearly exposed us in the back half. Also just on Byrnes he needs to know his limitations and play within those and not think he is better than he actually is.

Its not lack of talls in our defense, its lack of DEFENDERS in our back 6. Key defenders. Too many cheap ball getters who aren't defenders... Mackie, Wojcinski, Enright especially. Harley to me fits in to neither category, because he does neither very well.

Egan, Scarlett and Hunt are our best defenders. As in they take key roles, the others don't. Milburn is the exception as he is just so dam good he's wasted manning up a forward closely.

you never cease to amaze me.....the defence widely regarded as the best in the league has no decent defenders in it bar scarlo? he must be not only the best full back ever but the best player to have ever kicked a footy......

Yes, there would be something else going on, and that would be that we need to field the best side to beat the opposition and the selectors with only 1 good game under his belt may very well run out of room to fit him in the side if it's identified that we need to add 2 defenders (Taylor & Hunt) to the squad...

Kelly has been great this year, he wasn't great last night, but I'd select him before Prismal for next weeks game if you get what I mean??

Anyways, I think and hope there is room for him with one of Byrnes or Varcoe to make room but thats only because I see Stokes playing a defensive forward spot this weekend...

But at the end of the day, the selectors will pick the best squad for what they're aiming to achieve, in Prismalls favour this early in the season there is every chance they are aiming to get more senior games under his belt and don't think it will compromise what we need squad wise to win the game...

I thought kel was preety good on the wkend...won a lot of one on one contested footy which he is a gun at, but that doesnt always get noticed!

Agreed we are missing lock down defenders without Scarlett and Eagan and less defensive players like Mackey, Enright and Wojak are being exposed. Just something we are going to have to deal with at the moment as it's not about to improve drastically. Hunt won't improve it much he's much like the others who look way better around our AA CHB and FB.

Rooke may have to go back. Damn shame as I think we are better with him not having to go completely defensive but it's something he is more than capable of doing and something we really need down there right now. When DJ is fit we could use him back too.

As for Kelly coming out :o - stay off the drugs people.

 Has something been put in the water tonight? First Enright, then Wojak and now Kelly suggested to be dropped. "He coughed it up on a couple of occasions" - what, let's string him up, how dare he! For cryin' out loud, Kelly is in fantastic form and played well on Friday night. I and a number of others had him in the best players. No way is he going to be dropped. If you think that Enright, Wojak or Kelly are going to be dropped ahead of Byrnes, Varcoe and Prismall you have rocks in your head. And they are not going to rest players at this stage of the season (injuries are another matter) with a break coming up in two weeks.

:thumbsu:great post

Hey Cats Fans,

I just wanted to wish you guys the best of Luck with this weeks game even thought you probably will not need it. I am heading over for this game with my mum so please be nice and let us try to enjoy ourselves :o. Hopefully our club can reunite, get their head in the game, play four quarters and make a contest.

If we lose this one we will need to win 8 out of our last 10 to make the finals so hopefully the players will strive their upmost in this one.

Once again Good Luck and I look forward to seeing you guys.

Is this the "changes V Port" thread or the "let's take the piss" thread?"

So far I've seen Wojcinski, Enright and Kelly dropped, Wojcinski described as not being all that effective this year, and arguably the best defence in the competition as having more passengers then Vic Rail.

Nice to see the truth not get in the way of a good story. You should be a Murdoch-paper journalist.

Maybe you should now look at the posts in the context that they were written in...
