I don't disagree that McVeigh's output is insufficient but given our lack of leadership on the ground and given the options of players available he should remain in the side, its pretty simple.

It's not like there is a young kid in the twos busting the door down and McVeigh is keeping him out.

He may have 'blanketed' Bartel but Bartel was hardly flying. After a good start to the year he has been fairly poor, He is by no means in vintage form. He has been getting about 20 disposals per game (without looking at the stats)

i'm still frustarated with Mcveighs disposal this year...he used to be a great stabbing kick but hes lost it..he keeps stabbing the ball at players feet causing pressure where there didnt need to be any.

Obviously he stays because there isnt a player beating the door down for his spot but i'd not be unhappy for him to be phased out.

Bellchambers for Hille. Looks like Hille is laboring and has an injury so might need a spell if there's an issue. If no injury then gets another crack.

McVeigh has been more good than bad this year and I think people are lumping him into the Welsh category. They must be seen as one for some unknown reason.

Monfries stays in as he is now playing a role that suits - midget CHF. Davey, Jetta, Reimiers, Colyer can cover for pace.

Are we looking at matching up against anymore than Riewoldt and Vickery as talls in the Richmond forward line? I don't think we are.

Let Pears have a crack at Riewoldt and Fletcher take on Vickery. If things go pear shaped (pardon the pun) w can send Hurley back.

I would go back to the dreaded three talls in the forward line.

I am a broken record on this point but we need to stop viewing the three tall forwards as a failure. We haven't used the proper personell yet and the midfield has hardly been at the standard required to get the best out of tall marking options.

Neither Crameri nor Ryder (especially) need to be classified as immobile tall timber with limited ability to apply defensive pressure. Last night Ryder chased down Wojak, which is a considerable feet, and showed the sort of endeavour which makes him extremely effective with the ball at ground level.

It is a shame that Gumby didn't get another run at Bendigo this week but he has had two games and, I assume, an intense training load that should hold him in a good position.

The other advantage of going tall is the absolute lack of quality Richmond key position defenders.

If anything, I think we should go for another small forward. Really worked well against Geelong last night.

I couldn't believe people were giving Pears votes against the Hawks. Nothing against him because it was only his second game back, but he had a stinker.

I remember commenting that he was much better forst up against the Kangas.

Hardingham had one of his poorer games for the season last night but he got plenty of the ball so he was in the votes.

Bartel got 19 disposals. Big deal? The problem I stated earlier, if you cared to read my post with both eyes, is him offering nothing when we are in possession. If he was young, learning the ropes and just doing a pure shut-down role for the time-being, that would be fine. He is clearly limited in what positions he can play, is not getting any younger and offers nothing going forward; so we must develop some of the lesser lights at this stage as we are still way off Collingwood.

Why don't people talk about Reimers superb performance of 10 possessions from 75% of time on ground? or what about Alwyn Davey laying a solitary tackle despite being in the team for his forward pressure (to his credit, the Herald Sun has credited him with 12 pressure acts).

Colin, I think we are just going to have to face it that McVeigh will be in the side until someone else is ready to take his spot (come on Brownedog, get a move on).

Think we have to realistic about McVeigh's game last night.

Played mainly on Bartel - who has been in average form in the last few weeks - But Bartel got 6 Brownlow votes against us in 2010 - So the Coaches targetted Bartel as a player that must be stopped - You have to be happy with his role - Similar to Hurley blanketing JPOD - who destroyed us at Etihad in 2011.

Must say that McVeigh's kicking has gone OFF big time - can be a sign that a career is near its end.

When I watched the game, Bartell was playing through the middle, and lost McVeigh often in traffic.

So what if he got on the end of a few balls (12 to be exact), is that good enough is it? Are we happy with 12 possessions from a senior player who should be offering us something the other way?

If you bothered to do your research rather than wasting time with your snide arrogant remarks, you'd notice I've been calling for McVeigh to be dropped for weeks. Last night he did his role very well, he killed Bartel. He's not in the side to accumulate possessions or be particularly damaging (although some of his work across the half forwardline was decent), but to stop another player being damaging. He did that in spades, hence he played well.

Incidentally, Liam Picken averages only 15.8 possessions this year as a full time midfielder. Perhaps he should be dropped.

Yeah I've been the same. If he had of called for him to be dropped last week I wouldn't have questioned it but how can you call for him to be dropped after last night.

People would obviously prefer another flashy type that can use the ball well even though it means that Bartel gets 30 and kicks a couple and we lose.

It will be one of those.

I'd love to see Steinberg get a crack on the big stage but will be happy with any of them.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of those get a crack. Probably Carlisle and Steinburg ahead of Browne as they haven't had a crack this year. I'd add Gumby to the mix if he doesn't need another game at Bendigo.

So I'd take in either Carlisle or Gumby, who both move as well as Welsh, to stretch the tiger defence. Their tall backs aren't much chop and if we can move the ball like we did against Geelong then we'll be able to isolate them at different points. We'll actually do better at the G then Etihad with that game plan. My preference, if available, is Gumby as I'd like to groom Carlisle for a defensive post.

Hurley can play forward this week with the option open to swing him down back.

I'd also tell the players that if we are going to improve as a team we need to back up good wins like that and avoid what has become the inevitable let down. They should be prepared to axe players who don't back it up for this very reason.

You have a reasonable argument with regard to dropping McVeigh, his form has not been good, but how can you use the above quote as a reason and then suggest we bring in Hank to replace him?

Carlisle should play back to release Hurley forward. As well as making sure Gumby is at 110% fitness it allows us to keep the same balance. Hurley and Ryder to occupy the key forward posts and Crameri to replace Welsh's role - which is basically what he did for the second half against Geelong anyway.

It's a tricky one in that Welsh is out, but there doesn't seem to be any of our smaller/mid sized players available to replace him.

Ideally we'd be saying we'll bring Watson, Lonergan, Winderlich or Myers in, however these options are off the table for now.

With Richmond's backline in the state it's currently in there's a big case to be put forward to argue that it is a perfect opportunity to bring Gumby back in - he played his 2 vfl games and did well in both, and then has 2 weeks to continue working on his fitness before this weekend rolls around. Also the fact that he'll be matched up either by a youngster or a smallish KP defender who's horribly out of form has me leaning towards Gumby.....if he comes in and struggles against the Tiger defense, he can always go back to Bendigo for a few more weeks after that anyway.

Having said that if they decide he's just not quite ready yet, it would be understandable.

I'd also like to see Colyer start on the ground after what i felt was one of his better performances.

I know a bloke who keeps an eye on the U18s and he reckons that Ross will turn out to be one of the steals of last years draft.

Given I don't see Bendigo I can only go on reports but, although he is still a bit skinny, he has been building over the last month so I wouldn't mind seeing him get a run to see what he's got. Throw him in the deep end and see if he can swim.

You're paying way too much attention to stats.

Agree he did his job and did it well although when Slattery does the same thing and gets bugger all touches most flame him so it is hard to work that out.

Anyway he does not get dropped but i have seen a good number of things in the last month that has turned me right off McVeigh. Against the Hawks he refused to run and make an option to start with.
Saturday night their was one stage where he was calling for someone to pick up a player right in front of him, he pointed to Hille but Hille was on the opposing ruck, he looked behind and pointed but those players where on a man too so he simply left the bloke to go and find his man who was already being covered in the zone anyway.
One guess where the ball went ?
FFS if we are ever going to be top 4 then that sort of shit has to stop. They have to pick up a man when needed and then it is your team mates responsibility to find the next man.
His work in the zone is selfish and bloody ordinary.

Anyway having said all of that he will be in the side next week.
