I think you need to pick someone to play sub.
Colyer needs to be given a full game in the small forward role.
I do not think you can look at bringing in Carlisle or Gumby as a sub so i would be looking at Browne or Ross as the sub and that's it unless you wanted to make a statement on Hilles form.

I'm only going on reports too. While Ross is light, Richmond are a young team too so it shouldn't be a problem. I just think it's a good opportunity to give him a taste of AFL before Watson comes back.

IMO Hille's form around the ball was good, much better than in previous weeks. I thought he was reasonable and should improve again this weekend.

OUT: Welshy (inj) :( Was great in the first half

IN: Whoever is in form

Think Hurley should stay down back till Hooks returns, and bring in an inform forward for Welshy.

No chance that McVeigh deserves to be dropped.

His role was to nullify Bartel. He did it really well.

Just like you don't expect your lock down defenders to rack up possessions (Slattery, Toovey), you don't with your taggers, either. Sorry to state the obvious, but I felt I had to

Ive been screaming to bring in Williams for a while but it hasnt happened. First choice would be Gumby but if not Willo - he at least deserves a chance to prove why we paid all that money for him! :)

Yeah if no Gumby then id be happy with Willo in for Welsh. Even though hes not in great form, hes probably in the best shape hes been in for a while and is a very crafty forward and as long as the mids keep the eyes lowered and get it in his hands he will kick it 9 times out of 10.

If they see Willos and Dysons papers as stamped id be happy for an opportunity to go to Browne or Steinberg for development. With it being such a crucial game in the context of the season, i think they will look to experience.

OUTS: Welsh
INS: One of Williams, Carlilse or Dyson. Gumby should spend two more weeks at Bendigo and then only get a game if he outperforms Carlilse who should be ahead of him now on form.

I would like Stanton to captain.

Yeah it really is obvious, seeing as Ling (GEE) is averaging 22 disposals & Jackson (RCH) is averaging 21 this season, who are just two examples of players that not only can lockdown, but contribute going forward. McVeigh's average = 16. Sorry to state the obvious.

With just two examples, it tells any wise football follower he is not doing enough when we are in possession. What he does defensively is fine, what he does going forward is next to nothing. He would be of decent use IF we were in contention for the flag and a serious threat, but in all honesty we are NOT. We have to develop players that can undertake various roles, not continue with one trick players that are near retirement.

BTW, I realise he will not be dropped. I stated that in my very first post. If I had to make the changes however, he would be out because of the reasons above.

You also need to remember McVeigh plays 50-80% of his game time in defence, whereas both of those guys play 80-100% in the middle.

The average possessions argument never washes with me, let alone in a skewed situation like that.

Your second point about moving him on, I completely agree with. I've been pushing the "retire McVeigh" train for weeks, even years. I'm just saying that it'd be silly to drop him on the back of a really good performance, with no apparent need to, or ready replacement. Slattery's the only possibility, and right now McVeigh's form warrants retention.

No worries Whomb, all good. Differing opinions, am very much open to them if they're posted with a little bit of respect.

Also, Ling hasn't been getting full shut down roles like he has had in the past. Won't comment on Jackson because I haven't seen as much of him but Ling is definitely playing more of a free game.

Agree he did his job and did it well although when Slattery does the same thing and gets bugger all touches most flame him so it is hard to work that out.

Anyway he does not get dropped but i have seen a good number of things in the last month that has turned me right off McVeigh. Against the Hawks he refused to run and make an option to start with.
Saturday night their was one stage where he was calling for someone to pick up a player right in front of him, he pointed to Hille but Hille was on the opposing ruck, he looked behind and pointed but those players where on a man too so he simply left the bloke to go and find his man who was already being covered in the zone anyway.
One guess where the ball went ?
FFS if we are ever going to be top 4 then that sort of shit has to stop. They have to pick up a man when needed and then it is your team mates responsibility to find the next man.
His work in the zone is selfish and bloody ordinary.

Anyway having said all of that he will be in the side next week.

What if his instructions were to do nothing else but blanket his direct opponent?? Not sure if you've ever played a tagging role but most taggers I know won;t leave their player to mind someone else.

Everyone seems in fair agreeance this week (or close enough).
Out Welsh and IN: I'm happy with either Dyson or Williams. I've been calling for Williams in for a long time, but I think i'd prefer to see Dyson.

Absolutely love seeing Colyer, Davey, Reimers and Jetta in the same side again. Been calling for this for a long time, it's the way to play:thumbsu:

Played plenty of tagging roles but you are talking about tagging from 10 years ago. If we are ever going to effect the forward press properly then you simply have to have 18 players ready to pick up any man. No excuses.
It is something that has happened with the senior players at our club for a while now, they are often too wound up in their own game to play team first footy.
It is that i will not leave my man mentality for the better of the team that will see us fail to reach top 4 !
There are time in the game where you simply have to jump into the line and do what you have to do.

Dyson or Browne in for Welsh. I'd like to see Dyson get another crack at AFL level. Need to find out of he has anything to give the team, or if he's dead weight for us. Otherwise Browne against another very young team.

how about Gumby or Williams as the sub? Could they do enought if required to turn the game? Gives Colyer potentially a full game and yeh. I think Gumby or Williams could play back if we needed but surely that would be clutching at straws

Ling has been playing very much a ROLE position - will play on a specific player - whether that is in defence, midfield or forward.
