Ling has been playing very much a ROLE position - will play on a specific player - whether that is in defence, midfield or forward.

He isn't providing a hard tag in the games i've seen.

He was running with Stanton on Friday but but no means was it a full blanketing role. There were plenty of times when he wasn't anywhere near him.

Think that ling being a ROLE Player - indicates it is a HaRD TAG - difference is that it is not strictly in the midfield.

BTG indicated that Ling moved on to stants in the second half - I thought he was on Stants for most of the first half - Most important thing is that Stants had gradually improved his performance against Ling - to Saturday - when he clearly defeated Ling - Well done, Stants !

So if he is playing 15m off him or runs off him to go and get his own ball he is applying a hard tag? Don't think so mate.

There were times at the stoppages where he didn't go near him.

This is not the definition of a hard tag.

You also need to remember McVeigh plays 50-80% of his game time in defence, whereas both of those guys play 80-100% in the middle.

The average possessions argument never washes with me, let alone in a skewed situation like that.

Your second point about moving him on, I completely agree with. I've been pushing the "retire McVeigh" train for weeks, even years. I'm just saying that it'd be silly to drop him on the back of a really good performance, with no apparent need to, or ready replacement. Slattery's the only possibility, and right now McVeigh's form warrants retention.

The only change that needs to happen is the result from the previous game against these bottom feeders

Agree, Ling has not actually run a hard tag for a while now. Most sides are going with run with where you apply pressure around most stoppages and man up when you can but also use your attacking side to actually win the ball to beat your opponent rather than simply negate.

Ling chased the footy a fair bit and has done all year.

Richmond are landlords, they have paid off thier 30 year old loan to the bank to own the bottom half of the ladder. They just collect rent of the other 7 sides living with them.

Got it worked out now - Only players like H.Slattery who dont win the ball = hard tag.;)

Yeah it really is obvious, seeing as Ling (GEE) is averaging 22 disposals & Jackson (RCH) is averaging 21 this season, who are just two examples of players that not only can lockdown, but contribute going forward. McVeigh's average = 16. Sorry to state the obvious.

With just two examples, it tells any wise football follower he is not doing enough when we are in possession. What he does defensively is fine, what he does going forward is next to nothing. He would be of decent use IF we were in contention for the flag and a serious threat, but in all honesty we are NOT. We have to develop players that can undertake various roles, not continue with one trick players that are near retirement.

BTW, I realise he will not be dropped. I stated that in my very first post. If I had to make the changes however, he would be out because of the reasons above.

Perhaps you can explain how Liam Pickens should be dropped for averaging 15.8 disposals then, o self-proclaimed 'wise' one.
