That’s all well and good, but he is invisible as a forward - we’re a man down with him on the ground. Either he plays down back over TOB/Gardner or he continues to develop in the 2s.

Going to cost us soon if we continue to be this stubborn and think we can win playing one downtime
Not sure I agree with the playing a man down byline that some have mentioned. To me that suggests JOD is not compeating and is getting beaten contest after contest which isn't the case. Sure his stats lack a lot to be desired but Bevo has always been about effort. In saying that I would most likely drop the kid this week more so for balance but wouldn't call it stubborn if he goes around again but hey thats me :)

Really rate the idea of Vandermeer going into the role JJ was playing

He's no good up forward give him a bit of a license to run and i think he'll do well
Need a decent sample size in the VFL for me to entertain.
There will be some extremely nervous supporters watching him charging down the ground with ball in hand.

But agree that’s probably his best shot to make the grade.

What a horrible thing to say. The kid has been nowhere near that bad.
Gardner kicked a goal in each of his first two games as a forward.
Even through your Ryan-hating glasses, Gardner outperformed JOD early on.

VDM's most recent VFL games have been in defence mostly. So watch for him in this role going forward.

Feels like although JOD is trying his best we shouldnt really have a passenger in a team trying to push for top 4. He doesnt really bring much in addition to our current style of play. Id like to see Buku play that forward role as he can probably have more of an impact.

Treloar may be back this week, and he played HB last year at times so he could be 'eased' into senior football by slotting into JJ's spot.

I'd still bring in a running type for JOD - it's going to be hot and greasy up in Darwin so a ground-ball player just makes more sense.
I'd be tempted to get VDM in too so he can play both ends, as a forward his pressure was very good.

VDM and Richards played most of their junior days as rebounding HBs.

Richards was playing as a wing / high HF when he first broke into the team because he was too good for the VFL but we had other players in his role. There were calls for him to be traded but he took off as a player when we moved him to his natural position. The same May well apply to VDM.

2 fast rebounding HBs like those pair would be special.

Be surprised if Treloar is back this week given history. I just cant see them rushing him back but if they did then lucky for us. Hopefully not to play half back because hes better than that role and showed so earlier in the season.

JOD youre probably right running player would be better but we arent blessed for options. VDM to play back or forward would work for me. We need one more Mcniel is the obvious one as im not sure theres anyone else deserving if Treloar doesnt come in.

I think Cleary comes in for JJ.

VDM is an interesting one. His disposal and cleanliness up forward are not great but maybe being behind the ball this will improve so would not be too upset if he comes in for JOD given the conditions up there.

I would give Ads the extra week to be sure and Bruce needs some gametime in the VFL

You wouldn't bring treloar back from a hamstring injury in the conditions that you get in Darwin, wet and slippery.

Apparently he was ready to go last week but was held back just to be safe

I agree. No to Treloar unless he is adamant he wants to play and the medico's are 100% confident. Another week de-risks his return somewhat. We want Adam fit and in good form in September....not battling a recurring soft-tissue injury.

I wouldn't feel Treloar is especially likely to recur a hammy in Darwin given the temperature.

Hammies typically are more likely to go in cold conditions (Treloar in Canberra, JJ in Ballarat).

The big test in Darwin is the humidity, which would be a huge ask for any midfielder coming off a few weeks break.

For these reasons I'd like to see Treloar as the Sub. Would be a weapon coming in as the pace of the game slows.

Is Alex Sexton going to play? Always seems to do a number on us.

Cleary obviously has a very different playing style to JJ but they can still play the same role. Cleary definitely is capable of playing the high half back role over his time in the twos and getting up the ground but he’s also comfortable playing deeper and defending. I’d suggest he just releases Ed to try and cover JJs run, whilst adding another classy ball user out of defence which we could definitely use.

Treloar back in means there’s less time for Daniel in the middle, I’m happy for him to spend a little bit more time behind the ball to cover but I’d hate to move him back full time to replace JJ considering how important he’s been for us up the ground. He’d be easily in our top 10 BNF - having a really great year, and our backline has been great without him too. I think this would be the wrong move, albeit probably most likely.

I’d just keep it simple, JJ for Cleary and JOD for Treloar. Baz keeps priority for inside time at least for the moment, with Treloar running off half forward with some runs through the middle. Bont to spend some more time forward to accomodate the extra mid & to keep him healthy (can be 3rd tall and help release Lobb)

I like the Cleary idea as he does provide good run but not as quick as JJ. Really feel we need to replace JJ with a speedy player as it feels like hes completely changed our ball movement since returning to half back.
