It's going to be good to see Redden back. I can't think that Hinkley has anything too much intended for him. I would expect him to stay in the forward lines, clunk marks in the goalsquare and save Ryder from having to come any further than the middle of the ground by doing the forward rucks. This should allow Ryder to stay on the ground and keep up a lone ruck position for the full night.
Whatever has been said here in the past, it seems that Redden has regained at least enough fitness to run out a game. I can't see Hinkley going with half-fit players. But I'm starting to worry about Lobbe. The first call on this board that he may miss was done 3 days before the Freo game and it was originally touted as something they were being careful about. Now he has missed two and Port in the past have said that an injury is a 1 or 2 week thing and it then stretches out to 4 or 6.

I wouldn't worry too much about Lobbe. It's a no risk strategy. Better to get him 100% than "manage" him all year

Wasn't Redden ahead of Lobbe as a ruckman before he was injured? Do you see him re-establishing himself ahead, or is he just holding the spot now after Lobbe's 2014?

He was held in a higher regard than Lobbe before he got hit with the injury train

I'd say just holding his spot for now unless he hits a purple patch of form

Sort of.
For some strange reason there has been a history of one or the other being injured and both have seemed to be the "better" ruckman at various stages.
Lobbe seemed destined for the number 1 spot in 2011 then he got injured and Redden played well, then it swapped again.

We cannot wait till both are fit at the same time as they have showed that they could be a formidable duo. This was given as the reason for us not having recruited rucks for a few years after Lade and then Brogan retired.

I think it will be tough for Redden to consistently fit in the squad, only because Ryder is Ryder and Lobbes proven himself and is vice captain I believe. Redden was performing better, at least in the sense of being a pure ruckman when both he and lobbe were in the team I thought. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then tho, esp with lobbe getting so much game experience

Subbed out at 3/4 time even if Redden were 100% matched hardened could be a legitimately smart tactic. Bring a genuine midfield player on and we have Paddy and Jacko working over a ruck who is out on his feet. Pretty sure when we have our best side out there we will see that alot. Most sides go in with one ruckman if Lobster or Redden can play forward we could have 4.

I wonder how Redden's fitness will affect our run. An extra tall means we are a mid rotation down on last year and I still feel that means we can't play Neade as a pure small forward, we need another forward/mid type. I think this is exacerbated by Monfries, White and Hartlett being underdone.

I'd say Redden will play no more than 2.5 quarters before being subbed off.

Having said that, he played the whole game against Richmond in the pre season.

58% TOG, which is less than Moore even with a hamstring. Personally i think this is a rob peter to pay paul as Ryder showed he needs a hand in the ruck, one that Trengove and Westhoff can't fill against Sydney. I'm super excited to see big red just will be very interesting how the time management goes.

It is a risk to play him if we are thinking he will only be right for 2-3 quarters of footy. What if a player does a hammy in the first 30 seconds.....

Burgo and Ken know how long he will last. This is science for Burgo they weigh these things up? Can anyone remember a player who couldn't run a game out in the past 2 years?

Ryder and Westhoff off the leash more makes up a large part of he lost rotation. And if we are kicking it talls up forward we are going to need to rotate one less small through the forward line at a time, which gives more time for them in the guts or having a rest on the bench. I don't see it being an issue (once we are fully fit), it may be a slight one until then, but worth it IMO.

There is no way that Redden is underdone and not fit enough to play the entire game. A lot of you make it sound like Kenny, Burgo and the coaching staff have no idea at all. They are not idiots, I am pretty certain they are well aware that if someone gets injured early Redden has to play the entire game. All of this would have been factored in prior to selecting him.

I am 100% confident in his selection and super excited at the prospect of Ryder wrecking havoc up forward. Ted Richards is 193cm and Heath Grundy is 192cm. They will not be able to cover Ryder and when Redden rests up forward they literally have no cover for him. Reid is 195cm and can swing down back, however he is a dud and I would back Ryder or Redden to carve him up.

Do you reckon Gus could have played a whole game last week?

Who knows, we didn't get a chance to find out. However I would be pretty confident that he could of considering he was in the 22.
Kenny is a gambler - likes taking risks. He might figure Redden being able to go 100% for 8 to 10 minutes a quarter in the ruck is enough. And if we get injuries then we will deal with it if it happens.

You could be right here about Kenny... However I don't really see Burgo as a risk taker and I am pretty sure this side of things comes down to his call, not so much Kenny's.

So we are going to have two teams with tall forward lines and short back lines. The team that wins the centre wins the game?

Surely if there was any doubt then Young would have got the call up. Probably has more to do with 5 underdone players being 1 too many for comfort and Gus was the obvious choice out of Wingard, Hartlett, Trengove and Ryder.
