Prediction changes v Sydney

Yep, Crozier did absolutely nothing when he came on. He should have dominated considering the game was already won for him.

It was strange though given that he came in to replace Ballaz yet started as the sub. Also, Sonny played up the ground so we didn't have a crumber in the forward line.

De Boer needed a full game this week, so I would have either he or Suban back to the sub role and bring Mzungu in.

We do need another key defender for Buddy and Tippet, however Silvagni who should be fit hasn't played a game for 6 weeks.

I am not sure the 4th quarter was a great time to come on. We barely had the ball, a number of players had put the queue in the rack.

I am not prepared to judge him on his performance based on part of a quarter where the opposition controlled the ball.

My goodness Sydney fans are arrogant tossrags, you'd think they actually deserved the team they've been gifted with. A banter thread would be wasted on these clowns.

Its easy to be confident when you are granted a 9.8 % advantage and your own academy. Imagine what we could do with that sort of advantage.

I don't understand why people see the need for a third tall defender. McPharlin on Buddy and Johnson on Tippett.

Who will the third tall play on?

True. Apparently Reid is playing back now and Goodes... well...lol. So that leaves two key forwards. Also On the Couch? I think were discussing how our 'undersized' backline was effective against Geelong as we were able to run it out fast and efficiently, and it may be a strategy Lyon will continue to use.

The problem with Sydney is that both KPFs are big, genuinely good contested marks. While you never know which Tippett will show up, Johnson vs. Tippett (or Buddy for that matter) in a 1:1 situation is going to be a loss to us most of the time. Whereas with Port, Geelong and WC there is only one genuine KPF (with Westoff playing his usual floating role rather than as a marking target). Johnson gets to do the mop up or take the resting ruck (WCE), a task he is more suited to.

If Sydney can get their forward structure right, and isolate Buddy and Tippett, we could potentially be at a serious disadvantage if Johnson is forced to defend one on one. As is usual for us, McPharlin will probably take the deepest tall, with Johnson and Ibbo covering whoever is higher up. Having Silvagni would free up those guys to float across, where they are best suited.

I think we'll be okay, but I can see the benefit in playing Silvagni as well.

So you're saying Dawson won't get a game this year except for injury/suspension?

Johnson on Tippett is a pretty horrible proposition tbh, Tippett will monster Johnson if they find themselves 1 on 1.

If you mean Sir Swans, he's like that every week. If I had a dollar every time an opposition poster took his bait... ;) :D

It should be a good game, I don't think there's a lot between the two teams personally.

Was about to say that. Wouldn't think you would want Johnson one out with Tippett. Going to need a bit of help from Ibbo zoning off and lending a hand.

This will be the tightest game of the season to date. Sydney are definitely missing Malceski and Nick Smith didn't play on the weekend. If he's out again I think they're stretched a bit down back but not much and that's one of their only weakness, maybe the only other one is speed. I think Gu has to come in with de Boer back to sub and Croz to miss out.

No.

There is no need to play a tall because he is tall. If Dawson were fit and playing then Dawson plays, Johnson plays 3rd tall and the match committee have a very difficult decision dropping someone. But you don't bring in a player who hasnt player for a month because he's tall. You adjust.

Read the Geelong thread. Exactly the same stuff as said about Hawkins and Clark.

Touch of a strawman argument here, where did I say we should play another tall purely for the sake of having another tall back there?

The bolded is correct though, when Ibbo was out for long stints we weren't required to make that call but we're close to that stage now. Who do you leave out for Dawson? My take is that Johnson goes back to being the 3rd tall, Ibbo plays small again and one of Duffield or Sutcliffe either need to make way or find themselves new roles within the team. Will be interesting to see what transpires.

To be honest being one tall defender short has been a benefit i think as we seem to have become quicker at moving the ball from the back and more attacking.

Ibbotson has become better as the weeks keep going with his intercept marks, how good was he. Zacks backline pack marks weren ot bad also if only now doing it in forward line is possible.

Interesting selection times ahead. Crozier was a bit undecided in his decision making process, I would rather have suban as sub and bring muzungu.

i say sutcliffe needs to be running back creating play like sherridan add that bow to his game. Cant drop him on his 50th can we.

Reid is playing down back and with Goodes not playing at the moment either I actually think our forward line is far less cluttered this year than it was in 2014. Having 4 tall forward just didn't work too well. 2 really is a better number as it makes our forward line stronger when the ball hits the ground.

Reid has been really bad this year and may even be dropped

His disposal was really poor against GWS but he is actually defending quite well. He seems to be a strong intercept mark in defence as well. Wasn't it Fremantle we were playing when Reid took that game saving mark in defence? I think it was but he has been doing a reasonable amount of that this year though obviously not as important as that particular mark.
