If players need to be rested because of injuries that's fine. What you don't do is rest 'sore' players since that's just normal at this stage of the season...

Players should only be given the week off if they'll be better the next week because they didn't play.

Do not underestimate how important the mental aspect of the game is.

Adelaide lost to Melbourne & North Melbourne this year, because we weren't mentally switched on going into those games. If we go into this game understrength, and lose, we'll be reinforcing the doubts that Sydney put in our minds with that final last year. This is something we need to avoid if at all possible.

We beat Sydney in R4 last year, 5 months (almost to the day) before we played them in the finals. After R4 this year, Sydney were still getting visits from Owen. A lot happens in 5 months.

This year we're playing them on the eve of the finals, and we have the opportunity to knock them out of top-4 considerations. Even contemplating the possibility of not doing our best to do that is insane.

There's little benefit to resting players in R22, given that there's a bye after R23.

To win the flag you need to beat three other sides- normally the other 3 in the top 4.

The only difference finishing position makes is in what order you need to beat them.

If you have nothing more to add to the conversation, other than repeating this falsehood about "nothing to gain", then you should probably stop posting in this thread. Repeating incorrect drivel, over and over again, does not make it right - it just makes you wrong, over and over again.

Players who miss R22 are potentially looking at the following schedule:
R22 - rest
R23 - play
bye
QF - play
SF - bye (assuming we win the QF)

That's 2 games in 5 weeks.

Its been proven a one off game means nothing. See West C 2005 final round. 3 weeks later in a prelim when it really mattered we got done.

What other positives do we get from beating Sydney? The only thing that matters since beating Essendon and securing a top 2 spot is preparing for our first final.

And no team has ever made the finals after a 0-6 start to the season, so that won't happen this year either. Oh, wait...

Also, given that most premiership teams typically win 70-75% of their games, and August will often have 5 weekends, there is statistically only about a 20-25% chance* (i.e. one in 4 or 5 years) that a top team will go through August undefeated anyway. So a run of 10 years where it doesn't happen is well within a couple of standard deviations of events.
