Pretty good analysis on First crack about how poorly we have used the sub this year.

Khamis, busslinger and first year players aren’t impact players in this role.

Garcia’a performance was quite easily the best impact we have had from the role this year.

Garcia probably deserves a best 22 position so if we can get Treloar into this role and he can immediately slot in to the middle in the 3rd/4th qtr, Bont can be pushed forward.

We need to get this sorted for basically the first final next week against Freo.

Yeah I don't mind the idea of Treloar playing out the year as a super sub.

I've always felt the ideal sub would be someone explosive, who can run opponents off their tiring legs, and be an impact player if the game is on the line. Our subs have mostly been our fringe players, with little leg speed and damage. Cannot recall the last time any of them changed the game. Garcia was very influential on the weekend gone. But he deserves a best 22 spot. Treloar would be the next ideal option, but the cupboard is a little bare outside of that.

Treloar would be the perfect sub, barring injury could come on in the last and really have a say in the result.

But reality is, if he is fit and firing, he is a best 22 player.

I'm not completely sold on the sub needing to be an 'impact player' in the way you describe. I think it also has a use for giving young players an opportunity at senior level without necessarily exposing them to a full game - in my mind it suits someone like Dolan very well.

Garcia obviously played the sub role well on Sunday but he could have also done that across the whole game.

What if we cop an early injury? The sub also needs to be able to play out 4qtrs if required
We wouldn’t play him if he wasn’t capable of playing a full game. I was more so pointing out what an advantage it would be to have someone of his calibre as sub. But I also mentioned in my post, that if he is fit & in form, there’s no way we’d keep him as a sub, he’s too good not to be in the starting 22

At this point how do you know with confidence that he’s capable of playing a full game though? You’d want to see him get through 2-3 VFL games before you would trust that calf. Unfortunately for him I think he’s going to run out of time this season.
I agree he’s absolutely still best 22 when fit, but as good as he is I personally wouldn’t want to be taking the risk on him if we make finals.

Surely we aren’t going to use it for “giving young players an opportunity” for finals though. It really needs to be used to impact the outcome of the game as it’s primary function.

Having a look back at some of our close losses this year, players like Poulter/Gallagher were used as the sub.

Don’t think I’d be using those types but would prefer a Treloar/Garcia type who we can utilised in the middle as they are fresh.

If we had someone like that they would be starting, not sub

I think if you're going to play Treloar do it now. Will get more fitness and I'd rather see his calf go now instead of finals.

Agree. We also bring the sub on too late. Generally about 1/3 into the last quarter. I reckon the best time is 5-10 mins left in the 3rd. Get the pace of the game for a few mins then out run everyone in the last

Terrible idea. Tried that twice and hasn’t worked. All you’re doing is setting him up for failure. Would be a disservice to both Adz and the club to take the same approach a third time expecting a different outcome

I'm normally a fan of mature players who can play in more than one part of the ground being our sub, but I do recall Dolan doing quite well as a sub one game.

I’m a Poulter fan but outside of that brilliant first quarter a few weeks ago, he hasn’t taken his chance to cement a spot. He seems the most likely out for Croft.

Edwards out for the Eagles, McQualter saying Ginbey will play on Darcy or Naughton.
I'm a huge Ginbey fan and think he'll be a star but he's going to be giving up a huge amount of size.
