Changes v West Coast

No but Westoff might be permanently for the game and from what I've heard West Coast are tall all round.

Too tall :(

Naitanui may miss this game which would make our forward line a little shorter, this season we've had one or two resting rucks down there along with Kennedy and Darling. Even if NN plays I would have thought Carlile, Trengove, Jonas and O'Shea would be able to cover the talls without needing Westhoff to stay back.

is Butch playing in the backline now ?

West Coast have probably the best tall defensive unit in the league. If we go in undersized, we might not lose, but one of Glass, Brown or Mackenzie will be playing loose and will cause us a lot of issues that we wont have the height to solve.

For a worst case scenario of this sort of thing, remember what Cale Hooker did to us against the Bombers last year. 30 touches and 13 marks playing loose in front of Schulz. He was absolutely the difference, and he's only an average footballer.

I noticed an interesting stat...
Lobbe has 28, 29, 29 and 27 hitouts for the 4 games (rather consistent)

But in the loss vs North Melbourne the 2nd ruck was Westhoff and we lost.
While in our 3 wins the 2nd ruck was Trengove.

I reckon for next week we have Trengove doing more ruck work and let Carlile/Hombsch/Jonas defend WCE talls with Westhoff going fwd with some time around the wings/deep defense.

There's a ace up our sleeves this with Trengove HAS to be the 2nd ruckman.I remember a game a few years ago at AAMI we won by a point I think, maybe wrong there but Trengove pantsed a you Nic Nat in the ruck was the best game of his young career at that stage. He has to be the back up this week which maybe difficult with the Eagles tall forwards. The Eagles are a tall unit but our run could make their strength a weakness but having said that Darling and Kennedy cover the ground wonderfully well.Gonna be a cracker of a contest.

Trengove's leap is ridiculous. People who don't rate him in the top echelon of defenders tend to focus too much on his slightly awkward kicking and handball action, but he very rarely misses his intended target. Some of his disposals by hand and foot are absolute darts. He's an incredible footballer and an incredible athlete.

Three reasons Trengove should be the 2nd ruck over Westhoff,

1. Trengove's second attempts are better
2. It releases Westhoff to float up back or forward for the whole game.
3. Trengove has more of a natural leap and doesn't get as tired from rucking.

Nice research. Food for thought.

I doubt most people disagree that Trengove is a better ruck option on the face of it. The complicating factor is that Trengove is likely to be busy minding the opposition's best KPF.

I went and had a look at the equivalent thread on the West Coast board- gee they are a pessimistic bunch. Probably 4 changes to the side that lost to Geelong. Like us, it's hard to get a handle on where they are at but they struggled to beat St. Kilda and were thrashed by Geelong whereas our wins were convincing and we only lost to North by 7 (although it should have been more). So our form is better then theirs, but not decisively so. Be a real tough game, looking forward to it, it will tell us a lot about where we are at.

This is why Jack Hombsch (or Clurey if Hombsch's form drops off, but I don't think it will) must be a lock in our side every week.

There is word over here that he'll be right to play this weekend, but I doubt it myself.

Fingers crossed he needs a week off, for our sake. But in saying that, his early form this year hasn't been great.

Also, I like Trengoves aggression.

As they say 'we'll see where we're at after this week'.
Were going to cop a fired up Eagles after a disappointing loss to Geelong. Two of Simpsons messages will undoubtedly be, 'we don't lose two games in a row' and 'we don't lose at home'. They've got plenty of good players capable of big improvement.
I think the conditions and the ground do suit us. We've traditionally played Subiaco well and with the forecast at 31 and dry it will also suit. I don't think that gives us any edge but perhaps levels the playing field in terms of home ground advantage.

When you win by 113 points there isn't going to be many changes. Obviously Wingard comes straight back in, I think Impey goes back to the Sanfl.

My only concern is when you win by so much it can take that hardened edge off but given the reaction by the club to the David King comments I don't think that will be the case.

Definitely a big game for both teams and it'll still be rather warm over here at 5:40 when the game starts.

It sounds like they'll have a few big ins this week, which will definitely help balance their side.

I just hope we don't get carried away with our big win last week (which I'm sure Kenny won't allow) and come out from the get go and play hard and fast footy.

Can't wait.

I've also liked what I've seen of Colquhoun (but geez I hate typing his name, might have to abbreviate in future) and he is yet another who has been maligned after AFL games. He's played 10 games!

Sorry, but that is just absolute rubbish. Have not seen anything but positivity in regards to Colquhoun's future. His game over at Geelong last year was sensational for a first year player.

I really hope Naitanui doesn't play. He's a massive liability right now, just not fit.

I don't foresee this being a contest at all. Your midfield is a strength and ours is a huge weakness. Expecting a 10 goal loss.

I can't see that happening.Your boys will be fired up after the weekend with a few key ins also,we just have to bring the intensity, defensive pressure, tackling and 4 quarter effort we did against Brisbane.Yes Brisbane are woeful and decimated by injury atm but I saw something from Port which I haven't seen in a long time in which we went for the throat of the opposition and kept it there all game.Haven't seen us do that since Kenny took over. Our side is developing at a rate of knots atm, if we get well on top in the midfield we could get away but I expect a hard, tough contest.Wingard is almost a certainty to be back this week I don't know a great deal about the Eagles defensive players, but I can't see any Eagles small defenders matching up to our small forwards and all our mids that go thru our loaded forward line.

Our small defenders were some of our better players on the weekend, with Yeo and Bennell et al. trying their best to take the game on. Still concerned that they will be found out defensively at some stage, but Bennell in particular has been surprisingly good so far this season. We are missing Hurn and Waters badly though.

Those 2 being out would hurt any side as their both great players.Bennell has played well from what I've seen.As I live in WA I stay away from Eagles and Dockers games as I'm saturated by their hype.Anyway back to the game how many of your outs from last weekend should come in?

Shuey will definitely come back from suspension, huge inclusion. Rosa will be back and he has been very good this year. Glass will be back to bolster the backline.

Masten is a chance, but I think he'll miss.

Other names we may consider to bolster the midfield include Hutchings and Tunbridge.

That's an interesting comment and something I have been wondering about - does our game style suit the open expanses of Patersons? With a bit of research, we haven't won there to as far back as I looked (2008). This obviously has something to do with the personnel and previous coach and game style, however, now with Hinkley and his game style, do you think it suits the really big ovals?

What I observed in the Cows and Kangaroos matches is that we seem to allow the opposition to switch. We give them the out as we setup behind the ball. They seem to have an extra man or two in the open spaces as we've used his opposite number to clog up the forward 50, hoping to cause the turnover on the entry and then run it out at pace and in numbers.

My question is, will we have time to setup behind the ball and will West Coast exploit that extra space if we give them the extra man out of the packs?

As some have mentioned already, despite the feelings before the beginning of the season, we've won against 3 teams that have 1 win between them. This game will be a great measuring stick for where the players are at and our coaching staff.

I don't agree with this we haven't beaten anyone yet stuff.Carlton were up and about in round 1, they played their only decent footy for the year in that game, we powered away, Adelaide were up and about in round 2, hell they got in front midway through the 3rd, we buried them, North we threw the game away and got beaten by a hungrier side on the day, only one I'll say were no good are Brisbane. But not many were thinking we would do what we did to them.Just my opinion anyway.
