It was a pretty intense physical game played at a higher standard than your typical home and away. 3 goals nine and 22 inside fifties in the second quarter gave Port a sniff. Smith got injured early, he's ranked number 2 for score assists off the half back flank. Our midfield got beat by a really good balance of inside outside mids with nothing to lose and in front of 40 thousand of their fans. Smashed us in the center square.

Yet we still controlled the game, even after Sloane stirred them up belting their most respected player.

What I would like to know is, are you guys better than when you played us earlier in the year? We are. Mainly our midfield and defense. Apart from the odd hick up, brad crouch improves every game, so does his brother. Our defense is getting tighter and tighter

You certainly controlled the second quarter but I'd hardly say you controlled the rest of the game. Port had you beaten for physical intensity for much of the contest, they just can't kick or make good decisions to save their lives. It was a surprise to me and gives me hope that we can match it with you despite Naitanui being a massive out, given our back and forward lines are up there with the best.

I rate the Crows very highly but it wasn't your best showing and I'm not sure you can say it was an anomaly because it was a Showdown - I would expect a similar level of intensity from a final-round Friday night contest against a West Coast side who equally have nothing to lose and would be determined to show they can perform without Naitanui.

And yes, the past two weeks would certainly suggest we're playing better than we were last time we played you guys.

Bloody hell Nelson doesn't have many fans on this Board.

He really has become a lot of posters whipping boy. He is the first person that a lot of posters want dropped every week and yet the allowances that are afforded Le Cras and Wellingham this season have be in stark contrast to those afforded Nelson.

One day you doubters are going to be eating some humble pie as Jackson Nelson is going to be a really good player.
Lecras and Wellingham get their fair share. Many people have asked for Lecras in particular to be dropped.

The fact is, Nelson is borderline best 22 at this stage, while Lecras and Wellingham are crucial members of the team at their best, as Lecras showed against Hawthorn.

Nelson has morphed into a turn over king in the last month, send him back to the WAFL and learn his lesson.
This.

He has good skills, and nobody is saying he will never be a good player, but at this stage of his career he is not automatically best 22, and his disposal under pressure is a key reason. This will get better with time. You don't play people just because they are young when you are coming up for finals.

At this stage I am leaning towards Barrass in for Nic, just one change.

Obvious query is who will play second ruck. Can Lycett take most of the game on his own? The interesting thing is that Jacobs after two weeks out injured, came back last night and was beaten. Apparently was icing his ankle in the rooms after the game. If Scott can play at his best, he can match him.

Jenkins is second ruck. After the Collingwood debacle, I am loathe to take Gov out of the backline to go in the ruck. Maybe Darling? Dont know. Just dont want us to be too top heavy.

To some extent we need to be a bit top heavy to counter the Crows tall timber. I'm with you though, ffs leave Gov where he is. He hmgave us nothing in the ruck and really upset the structure in defence when he was out.

I lean towards Giles because, you know, he is a ruck. But I know quite a few on here who watch the WAFL don't rate him. Have not seen too many of his games with other teams so I can't say much. Seems silly to offer a multi year contract to a player who isn't chosen to fill the void in the position he has been recruited for. He's had two games and I can't say that he was worse than average. I thought he held his own. Certainly didn't have me pulling my hair out a la Redden and Jetta. His WAFL number seem ok.

I dunno, it's a tough position and I think throwing in guys like Gov, Darling, Brown and God forbid, Kennedy, is just asking for trouble.

Pity the MC didn't do that with earlier in the season with The Frenchman, seems like two separate sets of standards apply depending of your birth certificate.

Out: Nic Nat

B Brad Sheppard, Will Schofield, Tom Barrass
HB Sam Butler, Jeremy McGovern, Shannon Hurn
C Chris Masten, Matt Priddis, Mark Hutchings
HF Jamie Cripps, Jack Darling, Elliot Yeo
F Josh Hill, Josh J. Kennedy, Mark LeCras
FOL Scott Lycett, Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey
I/C Dom Sheed, Sharrod Wellingham, Lewis Jetta, Jackson Nelson

Just like most teams have to do against us, concede the hit out but win the clearance.
Lycett rucks 80% with Yeo and Darling to pinch hit.Put a bigger body in there to win the contested ball once it hits the ground.
Think Jetta just did enough in the first half to keep his spot over Redden.

Birth certificate or whether you're a new recruit or not. Old boys definitely have a much longer tether

I completely agree with you, the general vibe on here with regards to Giles isn't great, but he can do a competent job. I guess the question is, Giles in for Nic - ok. But then Barrass in also? And who does he replace? Jetta performed really well and I think he should stay in. Hutchings did a fantastic job on Mitchell, but do we need him to tag this week? I read that Hill has a slight injury. Could he go out for Barrass? Questions and conundrums everywhere!

Edit - I guess the only other candidate is Nelson. Which is shame as I really like what he brings and think we need to keep getting games into him!

1. Eddie Betts kicked 5 goals vs us in R12. We need to put a big quick defender on him. Put Brown on Betts as Brown can play vs tall or small fowards.
2. We need to play tighter zone vs Adelaide and should not be just thinking of attack vs Don Pyke‘s style in Adelaide. They scored more in 2016 than the Eagles.
3. Simple. Play hard will win.

Interesting here from Rohan Connolly on the stretch of games we played without Nic Nat from rd13-19:

"In every one of those games bar one, they lost both the hitouts and clearances. Intriguingly, the one exception was the Eagles winning the stoppages against Melbourne in round 18. Up against the AFL's best in Max Gawn, West Coast, for the only time in that period, went with a double-pronged ruck set-up with Scott Lycett and Jonathan Giles.

"The Eagles were only narrowly beaten for hitouts (44-46) and won the clearances (42-38). That may be a pointer to what is to come, with a potential pinch-hitter in Jeremy McGovern badly needed in defence, particularly this week against Adelaide's forward height."

Jetta just did enough to keep his spot over Redden ? Did you watch the WAFL game or read reports .. hard to keep Redden out with a majestic 18 disposal 1 i50 dog shit game

With finals on our doorstep we need inside contested ball, not 11 possession flash in the pan. Love the idea of Jetta winning a game for us and something that Redden will probably never do but he blocks, tackles 1%'s more and thats what we need over the next 4 weeks.

"We're going have to find something different that might excite a few people and might be something people haven't seen before"

Quote from Simmo about the ruck situation.
Ginners to ruck.

Bring Barass back to replace nicnat in the 22

Don't want giles even though he seems to have been sat out of the WAFL yesterday in an apparent move to avoid a 6 day break

Even though Adelaide have a tall forward line- walker, Jenkins, gov Jnr and lynch - they don't play tall as such. Certainly not in the way Collingwood play and exposed us when gov was in the ruck by bombing balls on their forwards heads to jump and mark

Adelaide especially like to push high up the ground then turn back to run into an open forward 50 - Jenkins has set a world record for joe the gooses in the goal square - so the big high balls Gov is so good at reading don't come in. Further Gov isn't as good defending balls when his opponent is running back toward goal

We aren't going to be as exposed if gov does play ruck a bit or even pushes forward to play as a marking target to stretch adelaides not overly tall backline

Mobility is going to be key to beating the hard running crows

If Jetta puts the same effort and pressure on that he displayed against Hawthorn every game then he is a best 22 no questions. Redden seems to be a bit no where at the moment. He'll be looking to 2017

When Mackenzie went down at the beginning of last season, we all went into meltdown thinking that our season was already done. The coaches then revolutionised our defence and we made it to a gf. Who knows, maybe they might do the same with our ruck department, especially with some of things that Simmo said yesterday.

Why not just play Gov on Jenkins and have him follow Jenkins into the ruck? Jenkins is our most dangerous tall inside 50 ATM despite the perception that he only gets cheap ones out the back.
Sauce isn't in great form(Lobbe beat him despite the stats) so I wouldn't worry about double teaming him or bringing in another ruckman.
You would be better off brining in outside run and exploit the possibility of us being down Smith and Sloan.

Anyway, Hope we turn up and it is a good hitout for both teams before finals. Massive Danger game for us.
