The last half had bugger all to do with fitness.

It was an elite side in the Hawks taking advantage of a tired Lobbe and making the rest of our boys chase guernsey's. We lost all potency in the middle and started to play negative, defensive footy. We were panicking when in space and just bombing away consistently. It was poor structure, combined with a mental attitude that seemed to change to game saving mode when it should've remained in attack mode.

I have zero doubt that had we been behind at 3 qtr time the last quarter would've played out differently.

I'm not really concerned about the last half, but I do hope we learn structurally from what we were doing.

whilst gus annoys the hell out of me purely because he goes to ground almost every contest, he's still a vital part to our forward line. doggies laid out the blueprint of how to dispose of the crows

What I want:

In: Gray, Stewart
Out: Ah Chee Mitchell

Young's contested work is so good, I'd like to see Robbie spend more time up forward. He's worth 3 or 4 goals a game up there, and I don't want a repeat of the first couple of rounds where we'd get it into the forward 50 and not score.

Don't mind that, but my guess is Stewart won't play at all this week. He was not looking good after that hit on Friday.

His slip over, basically in front of an open goal in the last quarter was a very frustrating moment.

I can't see Cheney being back for them this week after a Hammy, he's only had 2 weeks off, would think another one for caution.

You can't drop Monfries.

He plays such an important role in the defensive movement of the zone. He is more often than not the one who blocks the switch exit. Works tirelessly hard, is tough and experienced and on his day can kick a bag.

People need to stop thinking he's a Gunstan type forward and start thinking he's a Puopolo type forward.

I don't think its a secret our game-plan is based on outrunning opponents rather than beating them with exquisite footskills. You need the right players to execute such a game-plan.

I wouldnt be dropping one of our best runners (even with some questionable disposal) at this point in time. And to be honest I cant see Ken doing it either.

It's also built on moving the ball swiftly to certain positions so it's no help when someone can't do that it hurts the team.

Angus was constantly 1 v 2 defenders but he was also constantly presenting.

He isn't good enough to beat two and I wish he would keep his feet.

We miss his leads at half forward when he is not in. Do no drop.

For me White or Polec need a rest.

True. I don’t think Mitch is best 22 when we are fully fit and playing at our best but I do think he is best 22 at the minute and offers us more than anyone on the outer if that makes sense.

Yes the amount of times he was outnumbered means we have loose players. Was unlucky not to kick a couple too, especially that blatant free kick which wasn't paid. Would not be surprised if he has a huge one this week, usually plays ok against the cows.

I don't think its good for Ah chee if he plays as the sub for the third week in a row might lose a bit of that good touch. Either drop him to sanfl for a full game or let him be a starter on the weekend I reckon.

1 key stat for this game.

The crows are #1 for Clearance differential.
Port are 13th.

Win or break even in the clearances against the crows this week and I'm confident we will win the game.

Sam Jacobs is a big and critical part of this stat..

People are talking about our edge in terms of tall forwards but dont underestimate the impact having Lobbster and Ryder smashing into their one man band will have on those clearance numbers..

i mean if Jenkins gets much if any time in the ruck then

If you don't think it had anything to do with fitness, go back and watch the last quarter.
The majority of our midfielders look as if they were running in mud. Hartlett couldn't get past a trot in some of his chases. There were Hawthorn players everywhere on the outside as soon as they got their hands on the ball. That was because our lads had spent all of their tickets and couldn't go with the Hawthorn runners. I don't think it was purely because we were unfit. I believe it had a lot to do with Hinkley's game plan against Hawthorn, to throw everything at them early, spook them, capitalise on it and then hold on for dear life as no team can maintain the level of intensity we displayed in the first half.
I don't think we'll ever be able to maintain it for 4 quarters, but I do believe that once we get more gametime into Lobbe, we get Wines and Gray back to help out in the middle as well as improving our match fitness throughout the season, we'll be able to maintain that intensity, not for a full game, but definitely more than 2 quarters.

I would say after reading the article on Gray, he's not going to play. That'll probably mean nobody goes out bar any injuries from training.

I really don't think that one of either Polec or White will be ok to play against the cows and expect Robbie to sit another week out to make sure the hammy is fully recovered. If that's the case I'd be all for bringing in Karl for his first game as the sub and giving Ah Chee a full game.

What you described is how big comebacks happen, not just in aussie rules but also in soccer. Classic scenario.

Against most sides you'd expect them to be shellshocked and try to mitigate more goals, not attack furiously. If that happens quarters 2 - 4 would be more sedate and we could slowly increase a lead. It wouldn't surprise me to see us destroy a couple of lesser sides in the first quarter then take it to a 100+ flogging.

Monfries' work rate alone should be deserving enough for a spot. He's had an interrupted preseason with surgery from last year and the ASADA saga holding him back from the Nab Cup.

Take 1 of Mitchell, Ah Chee and Monfries to play in a showdown - I'd like to think that it's a no brainer due to experience, but with no disrespect to the other boys.
