Really agree with what you are saying. Why has St.Kilda won 10 games in a row?? They aren't that good, it's because they have had a STABLE line up. With Bellchambers out, we will really needa backup ruckman so Daniher will have to come in, but I really want our side to be settled.

Yep agree a settled team is a good team but Dempsey has to come in if he is fit. Two - Three changes need to happen this week.

If you think a player can be fit for AFL level after missing 4 months of training and having only a 4 weeks lead in then i suggest you research the matter a bit more.

5 changes seems extreme but is it really? Are any of skipworth, bellchambers, zaharakis, lonergan, h.slattery guys that would regularly feature in our clubs best 22? Perhaps 1-2 you could make a case for but look at the players coming in. Clearly Dempsey and Prismall are best 22 players, Lucas is required due to Bellchambers injury (with hille and laycock also out) and Daniher gets a gig in the absence of Fletcher/Hurley. In my opinion the team balance for the cats match was shocking as we had too many forward/mid utilities and not enough genuine defenders. Myers is debatable to come in but he is a defender who I think adds more skill wise over Slattery. I'd rather be giving match time to myers over h.slattery as slatts is never going to amount to anything whereas myers most likely will.

We actually improve stability by putting dempsey back into defence and we were winning games with myers down back also. I don't see stability being an issue with the players (who are no stars) going out.

That is what I would like to see. Daniher to help defence while Hooker has to compete in the ruck. Dempsey back if ankle is ok. Prismall to provide some polish to the skills set.

So he wasnt as good as the Mark McVeigh we are used to. Was he alone in that regard? A lot of people on here saying he looked like he needed the run....well we arent professionals and i would say its very easy to confuse getting smashed by a far better side with 'looking underdone'.

They probably thought that Mcveigh at not quite 100 % is still better than someone else fully fit. Not the first time a selection panel will use that philosophy and certainly wont be the last.

I think we can get a bit carried away with this 'dont play them unless they have played 4 weeks at Bendigo chasing arse' attitude. He didnt get injured, I cant see why it was a mistake.

h.slattery runs/moves like a bloke in his last year prior to retirement so fans could be forgiven for thinking he's 34. he's no good. he would have been a decent player in the 80s - similar to shane heard maybe. however if essendon are to continue to play fast, attacking footy requiring high skill and pace so as not to be caught out on the rebound there is no place for h.slattery in our lineup.

henry slattery was fully fit but just gives nothing - he rarely gets the ball, when he does get it he butchers it and he gets thrashed by his opponent and even as tagger/stopper gives up too much ground. thats a liability. henry slattery should be captain of the bendigo bombers as thats where he belongs.

I doubt that will happen until McVeigh is fully match fit and ready to significantly contribute in the midfield. Watson is already carrying a massive load in regards to clearances and contested gets and Lonergan lightens the load slightly. It didnt surprise me that Ling went to Watson because I bet during the week the Cats brains trust went to the StKilda tape and looked at what made us competitive and guess what Mr Extraction nearly won that game by himself and we cant expect him to do it week in week out getting tagged. For the Essendon Footy Club to reach the top teir we need more to do less rather than less do more as it's easier to stop a few.

Henry Slattery isn't very versatile. He's a hard nut small defender that will do the job on an average to above-average small/mid-sized forward. But when he gets matched up on Stevie J (who is an absolute freak), he was bound to get smashed.
That said, we can't exactly have him coming in and out of the side as the matchups see fit.

Regarding McVeigh, hes a proven class player. Yet hes anything but match fit. However, I'd rather have him display 15 accumulated minutes of brilliance rather than have a second stringer such as Tyson Slattery come in.

looking at matchups and the need for a chop-out ruckman (perhaps lucas) to replace bellchambers i see whole-sale changes this week.

the matchups i'd have:

Adelaide's forwards

HFF Van Berlo - McVeigh. i'd play spike off half-back whilst his fitness improves, he's been a good defender in the past and could easily do the job on a bloke like van berlo.

CHF Tippet/Stevens - Hooker the logical choice.

HFF Dangerfield - Dempsey. very quick so need a guy with pace to match him - hopefully dempsey is right to go or otherwise might need to look at daniher.

FP Porplyzia - Daniher. Like S.Johnson this is the key matchup we need to get right. Daniher is a reasonable spoiler and can match his pace. Please oh please don't put h.slattery on him knighter...

FF Walker - Pears obvious matchup.

FP Douglas - Myers. I want genuine defenders in the team and thats what myers is and he'd match up well size-wise on douglas.

So i would see Essendon's lineup looking as such:

B: Daniher, Pears, Myers
HB: McVeigh, Hooker, Dempsey
C: Lovett, Watson, Stanton
HF: Davey, Lloyd, McPhee
F: Jetta, Neagle, Monfries
Foll: Ryder, Hocking, Winderlich
Int: Dyson, Prismall, Houli, Lucas.

So the changes would be:

In: Dempsey, Daniher, Prismall, Myers, Lucas
Out: H.Slattery, Skipworth, Lonergan, Zaharakis, Bellchambers

Can see the three talls being in the same team, Neagle, Lloyd and Lucas unless Lucas plays down back like he did for years

I don't buy into having an excuse once you are on the ground. If anything that makes everything worse.

I can't say I fully agree with your comments on H.Slattery but then I haven't watched a full replay yet and focussed on him so I will reserve my judgement until then.

In regards to changes this week...

Assuming there are no further injuries or suspensions:

All fairly self explanatory I would've thought.

for a small defender role, neither nash or h.slattery are any good. tyson slattery shows promise but needs more time. i wouldn't mind picking up fremantle rookie listed clancee pearce for a HBF role. he would suit the skilfull run and carry role whilst also being ok defensively - can you trade for rookies if they are not senior listed? could it be considered a restraint of trade from the players perspective if one club has you rookie listed, is not willing to promote you and another club is?

I've talked myself into wanting us to pick Lucas as second ruck this week. He'd probably do just as well as Hooker in the hitouts (e.g. crap) but he'd get more footy around the ground and it would allow Hooker to stay back where he's developing quite nicely.

It would also be a bit of a headache for their coaching staff because they'd have to be mindful of him drifting forward.
