Why is everyone dropping Viney?

I would play terrible if I was played deep in the forward line even though I was an inside midfielder as well.

IMO he was played deep forward due to injury - he needs to rest that ankle.

OUT: Jetta, Viney
IN: Nicholson, McKenzie

I'm worried we're a little too tall however, Strauss would be just as good a chance to take Jetta's spot considering his better Casey form.

If Clark's out, I'd rather bring Blease in - keep Pedo, Howe and one of Gawn/Jamar in the forward line.
Jetta - should have been play on - no free kick. We need to get back to the Seventies !!!

Didn't look like much to me first time I saw it, although he did seem to hit Whitfield's head with his shoulder when they showed replays. What with the lottery of the MRP these days though it's hard to say exactly what his punishment will be.

As TPM said, Viney needs to be versatile. Needs to be a goalkicking midfielder. You see Trengove do it, Michael Evans was doing it, imagine if Viney was capable of 20-23 possessions and one-two goals a game. He'd be even better than what we already know he's capable of.

He was also in the rehab group on Thursday so I reckon he'll miss due to injury anyway.

Jetta will get 3-4 I think, looked very ugly, he even jumped off the ground and that never helps the case

Jetta is chance to go (big chance really) and Clark hurt his footy and spent the last term on the bench. We will find out if he needs to miss a game or two in a few days.

The big one is Dawes. IF Clark has to miss - is he ready? And if he is will he need a run at Casey first?

Viney MAY get a rest, so I'll go with:

In: Sellar, McKenzie, Nicholson
Out: Jetta, Clark, Viney

I'd hope they don't need to make too many changes, but I think we are a chance against a wounded Brisbane up at the GABBA if we can take the last quarter form with us.

Im not sure why you would want Sellar,Jordie Mac and Nicho back in. Our kicking effiency is already poor and if we throw these 3 back into the mix i believe it would decrease even further below the AFL average of roughly 66%.
All 3 are lucky to even kick drop punts when they dispose of the ball.
Blease would be a good in and maybe a taggert.

If Viney does get rested may be an opportunity to get Kent in as a like for like.

Not getting excited about the win. We played 1 great quarter, 1 good quarter and 2 ordinary ones. But it's better than a loss and we should take as many of the same squad as possible barring injury. I'd suspect Viney who has had an ankle injury last couple of weeks will be rested for a week to get over it. Clark could possibly be rested also depending how he pulls up.

OUT
Viney - feel he will be rested for a week to get over an ankle complaint
Jetta - will be on the sidelines for a couple after his bump I'd reckon
*Clark - if fit he obviously plays

IN
McKenzie - comes in for Viney and can play a negating role on Rich who is crucial to the Lions
Strauss - between him and Nicholson, but Strauss is simply better by foot
*Dunn - if Clark is injured then Dunn can go back and release Watts or Garland forward

I'd love to see Kent have a crack, but unless Matt Jones, Bail or Evans gets injured or loses form, I can't see him getting in. Maybe could replace Tapscott who isn't setting the world on fire atm but should be left in the side IMO.

Blease has to be a chance to come in as well. His run and carry is crucial, but he hasn't dominated at Casey, so can stay there until he starts to find form.

Dawes surely has to play at Casey for at least a week doesnt' he? I wouldn't imagine he would slot straight back after not playing for over a month. But if Clark is injured and Dawes is ready to go, I'd rather him than a Sellar tbh.

I completely disagree. After 4 games?? It's so early in his career. Let him adjust to AFL football by playing to his strengths. Leave him in the midfield and around stoppages to do his bread and butter - contested possession winning. The other aspects of his game will come with time. Neeld completely ****ed Magner last year by playing him out of position, I don't want the same to happen to our brightest spark.

Also, look at some of the best contested possession winners in the AFL:

Joel Selwood - 0.5 goals per game
Sam Mitchell - 0.24 goals per game
Scott Thompson - 0.61 goals per game (has been kicking less each year since 2005, yet he has become a better player in that time)

No-one would say that these guys need to be more versatile. They are supreme at their craft and their teams are better for it.

Viney should end up being a very similar player - hard, fearless and a leader. Let the others that you mentioned (Trengove, Evans, Blease etc) kick the goals.

Almost every elite midfielder plays in the forward-line when resting these days, Jack is good overhead for a midfielder - he needs to learn how to impact when not in the middle as well.

Jetta definitely suspended you'd assume, while Viney must be doubtful. I'd say Strauss and Jordie should come in after really good VFL form (from all accounts). If Clark isn't fit, then I guess Sellar comes back.

Apparently Spencer was just about best afield in the VFL too. Does everyone think Jamar did enough to keep his spot? Probably, you'd think

I think Jamar is looking alot better having Sir Maxalot Gawnawsome in the team and i think he should stay a few more games.

I agree mostly with Crusty, except for Dunn as hes not had a run in twos and we are already pretty tall so maybe Blease/Kent

Hopefully Dawes comes in for Casey this week too... Having another genuine tall in a few weeks will really free up Clark a lot I feel.

It was a real positive having Pedersen and Gawn down in the goal square at times yesterday, makes a big difference to have a second tall along with Clark in the forward 50m (and actually be capable of taking a mark, take note Sellar).

Out: Jetta, Viney (give the boy a rest)
In: Magner (is he eligible?), Toumpas
Start Toumpas as Sub and Davey on ground to replace Jetta.

For the 1000's time Magner cant play, he is a rookie.

Toumpas didnt even play in the 2's on the weekend and you want him back?

He needs some time in the 2's. Has looked completely lost. (Brian Royal) IMO, another pick poorly managed.

Thanks re: Magner, didn't read the rest of the thread, so first time seeing that.
Toumpas, yes. He's rested, bring him back in, start him as sub. Get him some game time in the 1's.
Everyone in the Melbourne team in round 1 & 2 looked completly lost.

More of a change of position than player but I really want to see Sylvia play in the middle more ala the final quarter vs GWS. His work with Jones smashings the clearances was superb and I reckon he'll compete really hard to beat Moloney this week.

Don't know we can afford to drop Viney if we are serious about trying to win this game. He is our second best clearence player this year with 15 behind Jones who has 28. Only Grimes and Jamar are the other players in our team above 10 with 12 each. if Viney isn't playing that leaves Jones with a hell of alot more work on top of what he already has out there against players like Rockliff, Rich, Moloney and Redden.

True. Viney would be the kind of bloke who would go balls to the wall after being subbed off during the gws game.
