Prediction Changes vs Brisbane

We don’t need runners out of defence against Brisbane. We need long, precision kicks, and a forward line consisting of Butters, Rozee, Duursma up forward and Westhoff, Ryder and Marshall as the lead ups on the wings.

Lots of over the back goals is the name of the game.

What you do is exactly what North did - you let Brisbane send their wingmen into the centre square and instead instruct one of your half backs (Hartlett/Byrne-Jones) to act as your midfield support. In the meantime, your wingmen rush back into defensive 50 while the other remaining half backs move in to cover the space left behind by your +1 in the square...pushing up to deny the Lions the corridor if they win the centre bounce, and ready to receive the handball out the back from our midfield if we do.

Then those two high defenders - who have to be long kicks - pop the ball on the angle to Westhoff and Marshall leading up the wing, who can then pop the ball to Ryder with Rozee, Butters and Duursma as your small forwards.

Easy peasy :)

Don't we suck at long, precision kicking though?

Hence why I want Broadbent and Hartlett in the team. I’d rather Watts or Lienert instead of Broadbent but we don’t have either right now. Bonner should be able to do it but I don’t trust him to defend the corridor well enough after his performance against Carlton.

This requires the type of gameplan that Geelong always uses against us - Brisbane relies on counterattack and centre bounce for their score - it’s something like 60/40. If you don’t give them a foothold by pushing too aggressively with the zone, they don’t have the capability of thinking through a zone...they’ll always want to rush it (just like us in 2015).

Make no mistake - for two and a half quarters North Melbourne were thrashing Brisbane in every area except the scoreboard. They just didn’t have the quality to finish their work. Then Polec and Hall began to cheat their defensive assignments and left the corridor open, which enabled Brisbane to get their centre bounce game happening.

If we hold to our structures and trust the system, there is absolutely no reason why we can’t win fairly comfortably. It’s when we start thinking “How easy is this?” that we will run into problems - as Brad Scott alluded to on 360 on Monday.

Watch again did at various stages

If you want a point of reference go to centre square action which resulted in free kick to Carlton and a bloody nose to Cripps .

Week before Oliver got much attention , I think SPP is an annoyance

Not a lot of love for S Gray. Squad needs to be 30-34 deep so he'll have to get game time at some stage.

Personally think he does a role and hold his own when we're playing sides ranked 8-18th and we probably owe him a couple of games just for helping us get Lycett back. Can't see how he fits in this week though.

Same with Trengove and Atley despite form shown against Westies.

We owe Sammy nothing, has been on borrowed time for a long while.

If he gets a game, then we have problems!

Atley is not in the same category. If he can continue his form against West he’ll get games and see if he can take it to the AFL. Something Trengove and Sam Gray (except against shit sides or ones going half pace end of year) haven’t been able to do.

I hear you and don't think S Gray is in our top 25. Also can't see what role he can fit in for this week.

Just think as fans we're over the top and expect fantasy football logic and can be overly harsh on our expectations especially on the fringe players. At some stage this season he'll get a call up and we need to accept he just has a role to fill. Coaching structure and ability to select the best available player to fill the role is probably what we should be discussing more. To say that he's useless and can't play any role to me is over the top.

Most seasons we play 30-35 players over the course and can't expect them all to be A grade footballers. It's going to be a struggle to keep quality players in that 22-28 range as most players that fall in that range, will fancy themselves at another club with an opportunity of proving they're worth a first 18 spot. If they didn't you'd have to ask why are you even on an AFL list.

We're also bi-polar in arguing on one hand that we shouldn't be giving out golden passes but on the other hand not rewarding form being shown for the Magpies and/or on the training track.

Ultimately I've got no doubt Sam gives his all and tries to get every inch out of his game, when you're a fringe player walking that path it usually results in having bad games, making errors or getting the odd touch up but still expect him to play a role over a season when called up. Also has suffered as much as everyone else in being asked to play in the game play of 2016-18. Not sure if anyone on this board would play him as a one out 5 foot 6 full forward.

For what it's worth AFL summary from last year's game

PORT ADELAIDE 4.6 7.7 14.8 14.13 (97)
BRISBANE 4.0 9.6 11.8 14.8 (92)

GOALS
Port Adelaide:
S.Gray 3, Motlop 2, Dixon, R.Gray, Marshall, Wingard, Westhoff, Watts, Rockliff, Ebert, Boak
Brisbane: Cameron 3, Hipwood 3, McCluggage 2, Robertson, Christensen, Rayner, Zorko, Cutler, Cox

BEST
Port Adelaide:
S.Gray, Polec, Wines, Hartlett, Ebert, Wingard
Brisbane: Martin, Cutler, Zorko, Robinson, Hodge, Hipwood, Christensen

Although not sure what it's worth, they had Wingard in the bests and his "attempt" to chase Hodge in the last 30 seconds where it was easier to pull up with a hammy that never forced him to miss a game still burnt into my memory.

That fake "hammy" was the rubber stamp on his getting traded! It will live in infamy with me!

Sam Gray is a much better footballer than Joe Atley in almost all aspects of the game.

Of all games for a Sam Gray return I wouldn’t want him back for this game, because he’ll put on a clinic as usual against them and be gifted many more games because of it..

At present and at SANFL level. Sam Gray is at his ceiling. At 20 Atley is 3 - 5 years away from his. At 10cm taller more likely to be able to take his game to the required level in the AFL, where you can't get away with being so much shorter unless you are very good (which S. Gray isn't). So Atley over S. Gray every time if Atley's stats are decent, even if Sam's are better at the lower level.

Hammer ruled out of any games this weekend due to slight hammy...sigh

Joe closer to 21 and in year 3 of AFL . Average life span AFL player 6 years . Does this means he will peak post career ?

I'm joking but where does this 3-5 years away . Clubs view clear given 2 year extension late last year .

Does it apply equally to all ?? ruckmen , big mids, wings , small forwards?

Mid's hit their peak between 23 - 25 usually. Plenty of good games before then, but this is when they start being the best they'll be. Usually until 30ish, then start slowing down, but unless at Port, they'll still play some more (at Port players reaching 30 spontaneously age another 30 years overnight and have had to retire too often over our AFL period).
