We need Marshall next week since there’ll be no Watts or Dixon.
What we need is someone who can take a contested mark in the forward half. Or can lead out to take an uncontested mark. Goal kicking ability is less important, first we just don't want the ball instantaneously rebounding out as happened so often last night.
If we want to win now we need someone who can do the first two things, and Marshall can't. If we think Marshall will be able to mark up forward in 10 games' time and are willing to effectively play one man short until then, or as long as it takes, we'd better hope everyone can continue to compensate for him until then.

No he didn't, gifted a goal from a free and missed the single opportunity he created off his own bat. And there was nothing else to compensate for that output. The head knock was quite late, he'd had ample game time to score. Furthermore nothing in the JLT to suggest last night was an aberration.
This sums it up.

What are Marshall's achievements? Big wraps on the kid but he hasn't done anything miraculous yet.

I was merely suggesting that Frampton should be considered as a replacement for Marshall IF his form warranted it. There is nothing controversial about that.

I could ask you what are Marshall's achievements as a forward in the AFL recently that have made him a guaranteed selection and you would have donuts.

He’s averaged more than a goal a game in 12 games, and shown that he’s super athletic and agile for his size with a great footy brain. This is why he was the first KPF picked in the 2016 draft. Raw talent like that wins out over a speculative late-draft ruck-forward every day of the week unless he gives you a good reason to drop him. And, again, one bad game sure as shit isn’t that reason.

Sco
How has Frampton gone for the Maggie’s over the past couple of weeks?
red a couple of goals in the scratch match against the crows. Against West Adelaide, played in ruck and was amongst the best. Did a lot more around the ground than Marshall ever has.

Picking players based on where they were drafted is an interesting approach to selection.

Westhoff was a speculative late pick and Butcher was a top 10. It's important but it's not everything. I just like seeing everyone get equal opportunity if it's earned.

Deceptive statistics. 7 goals in 2 games, R1 and R2 last year. So the obverse is 5 goals in 7 games. On that basis he's probably due a goal against Brisbane. I wonder if we can forgo it to bank it for the Richmond game the week after?

Hurr. I'm not picking players based on where they were drafted, I'm pointing to where they were drafted as a guide to their exposed junior talent and potential in the eyes of professional recruiters. If you think Frampton has one tenth of a chance of being an AFL player as Marshall does, you've got rocks in your head.

As a coach I would pick players to win games of footy. Seems to be the logical aim.

And if you subtract one quarter of Kane Farrell's career then he's going at 4 goals from 5 games.

He's not, of course, and it'd be a really shitty thing to argue that you should take out the best games of a young player learning the ropes and just look at his poor ones. Which is why I'm genuinely baffled as to why you're doing so to Marshall.

So what are his achievements as a forward in the AFL, or for that matter the SANFL, that have him banging down the door for Marshall’s spot?
Played only one afl game as a ruck/forward. Took a couple of good contested marks and scored a goal. Was amongst the best in the one SANFL game and played well around the ground.

Yeah well Frampton is a proven AFL match winner, that's for sure.

You pick players to win games of footy, both now and in the future. It's called development. That's why you don't drop blue chip prospects for not knocking your socks off a couple of weeks in a row, unless you're a squirrely idiot. We'll find out Thursday whether Hinkley still is.

He can't be proven unless he's given a go, that's the point

There's no room in the team for him to be given a go right now, that's also the point.

He could play Marshall's role... and couldn't do any worse on current form.

Except that Marshall's playing Marshall's role. There's literally not a single thing Frampton has over Marshall right now except evidently a couple of BigFooty posters who'd rather roll the dice on a colossal gamble than be a little bit patient with a sure thing.

I'm OK with Marshall working his way into it but a couple more games like yesterday's and he should make way for Frampton (If he's performing)

A colossal gamble? There would be zero net loss dude. Marshall isn't performing Marshall's role well enough.

Again, I am not talking about just next week's game. I am talking about the next 10 years. It's called development, and it requires patience and investment, even when that investment represents a short term loss for long term gain (which is not even the case yet here).

I don't disagree but we shouldn't let him go on all year like this. Frampton deserves development too even if he was a later pick. Whoever can perform the best should get the gig.

As I said, no issues with Todd playing a couple more weeks yet without the risk of being dropped.
