The big bald bloke... Had a cracking match.
I know who he is mate. I think Drew was better and has been better in 2019, particularly with his defensive work at stoppages. I think Drew could well be the man that goes to Neale this week. I also think Rockliff and Boak have been better as inside mids.

Dont get me wrong I really like what SPP brings. I like our balance at present and i worry that if we bring in Wines for Amon, then we have 5 inside mids (of whom probably only Boak can also play outside). Perhaps SPP could come off a wing or spend more time forward.

I am glad its not my call to make....

You could roll any of Boak, Rozee, Butters, Burton and Bonner at times through the wing to replace Amon. Ollie and SPP can rotate in the midfield and have rested forward at times in the past. SPP kicked two goals from resting as a deep forward and could've easily had another one or two, or you could play him at half-forward where he can make the distance from 50. At the very least he commands attention, same with Ollie who is a good contested mark.

I reckon we replace Amon with Wines. The real interesting change will be who comes in for Watts - Hammer or Howard. Hammer plays more like Watts in that he is a good user of the ball and focuses on intercept marks, whereas Howard has the height to compete with one of Brisbane's taller forwards. I don't think anyone deserves to be dropped if we want to bring in both but either of Bonner/DBJ could be in the firing line.

Am I wrong in saying SPP already is spending more time forward?

Sounds lame but I really think his brief is just to follow the ball. I don't recall him ever sitting back and covering a position up forward or down back this year.

But he plays an entirely different way to Watts. I think for the things that Watts has been asked to do down back (lock down an opponent, intercept mark, and set up play coming out of defence) Hartlett covers the best.

I agree with you on Hartlett being closer to Watts than Doogs is. My concern is that we're going from midsized forward lines like McDonald/Weideman/Melksham and McKay/Curnow/McGovern in the first two rounds to three genuine big bastards in McInerney/Hipwood/McStay this week. We don't need to go like-for-like with last week's defence, we need to go bigger than last week's defence.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us rotate Wines and SPP as key forwards and drop Marshall, especially with Wines needing to regain match fitness.

Monty said, he needs to start marking rather than spoiling everything, then he will be back in. I love the Doooogs though.
i have always believed the Dougal is a better forward than backman, i would like to see this tried at SANFL level before AFL level, he has natural flair and isnt afraid of crashing packs

I'm just thinking about that last goal he scored where he marked it in the pocket, so he was spending some time there in the last quarter. Small sample size anyway.

When and why did everyone start hating Dougal Howard? Sincere question. Wasn't he the man last year?

A few changes in the coaching staff have meant we have fresh eyes to look at the way we played last year, as a team and as individuals. I like the idea that we think we have found a way to make a good player better. Nice for a player to have an actual performance marker to aim for other than just 'work harder'.

Tired players who are staying on, for whatever reason, will find a useful spot to rest. That's how Dew kicked a couple of goals in his Hawthorn GF, from memory he was actually a defender in that game.

Hipwood concerns me having more than 10cms on Clurey and 15cms on Jonas. He just seems like the type to "catch fire" as old mate Dwanye would say.
clurey's the guy for hipwood, he's pretty much a 1 trick pony and thats either leading up to the wing or running back to goal, if you play him in front when he's in the forward 50 and play him from behind when he's up the ground you should nullifying him easily, let him get a few cheap possessions on the wing

Talls have always hurt us. Particularly since Bassett said "Talls have to be good to damage you" and played a bunch of smalls against tall forwards who the club didn't rate, and then those tall forwards shredded us.

We don't defend proper talls particularly well. Especially if they work up the ground like McKay did for Carlton on the weekend.

A real test for Hinkley and selection committee of have they learnt?

We don't defend either particularly well. Carlton were able to play a simple, direct, kick to the contest game for a lot of it, and if they didn't mark it, they capitalised on our players all trying to spoil, with their smalls all staying down for the crumb and running away with them.

Our obsession with sending everyone up to spoil, always leaves us incredibly exposed at ground level, and is why smart crumbing small forwards often have days out against us. Teams know to challenge our tall backs ability to defend in the air, and they then set up their small players to hit those crumbs at pace. Why we struggle so hard to adjust to this year after year is beyond me.

Monty has nailed this, Dougs could be that intercept marking defender that all good teams have. He just got so many plaudits for fisting everything (sounds sick I know) that he didn't develop the intercept marking side of his game. If he plays this week I hope to see him have the confidence to go for more marks and then play on using his speed. His decision make and skills are suspect but he has a license to take the game on under our new game style.

Dougal Howard vs. The Football Park pumping fist float. Who did it better?
