The idea of Marshall is unfortunately much bigger than the reality of him. I get that you need to give games to KPPs for development, but if you're selecting on form he's barely hanging by a thread.

What idea is that?

The one where he doesn’t get outmarked by his opponent?

The one where he always always keeps his feet after a contest.

The one where he impacts the second contest after the attempted mark far more often than a 197cm kf ought to

That his disposal is far cleaner and more creative than the majority of our team

The only knock I have on Marshall is I want him to be more involved, but he is a 12 game kf and we’re seeing signs of him becoming more involved.

The problem is Marshall is doing so much more than people are giving him credit for. When the last part clicks for him he can be a superstar for us. I’m not giving up on that.

I would rather have a guy that does those things you can’t teach a key forward then a guy who kicks a few goals but has nothing else to offer when he isn’t kicking em through the big sticks

I'd love to see McKenzie get another go, especially with this new kick-in rule.

But am also keen to get Doogs back in the side, so won't be too melty either way.

We'd be praying for points, he'd get it to the circle every time. DO IT

I like this comment from one of the tipsters on Th Roar....."The other match that night is what really has me excited. How good is it to have Brisbane versus Port Adelaide as a top-four clash on a Saturday night again? Time to bust out the Nokias, get frosted tips and blast Sandstorm like it’s 2003...."

Two changes this week - Wines and Howard, simple ins.

Marshall should be told he is on thin ice and needs to deliver on game day, sure he is talented but you need to use that talent when it matters.

Big game from billy this week and swap them around if Marshall doesn’t step up. Make him earn his spot back in the side, it dois ant help his development if we gift his game when he does nothing, dominating in the SANFL and forcing his way in would do more for his confidence then doing nothing in the AFL side.

Based on what?

Howard’s form was fine last week.

Just had a poor start to the year in the preseason while we had quite a few talls in the side.
He wasn’t a standout for someone desperate for a recall

Ollie Wines hasn't even played yet. Sometimes you have to pick players because they fill a need and have enough runs on the board that you can be fairly certain they'll step up on game day.
I get your point but with our new game plan unless he increases his intercept marking so we can rebound quickly rather than just spoiling left right and centre we could be in trouble. That’s why I liked Watts.. marked then got it accurately into the hands of a team mate further up the ground. If Doogs can start do that regularly then well and good and I will stand corrected. I rarely knock players anyway and still wish the best for the fella.

2001-2004 were some really good times. Brisbane were the scariest side I've ever seen.

The reality is that if we drop him, we lose that target inside 50, which makes players hesitate, slows our ball movement and generates turnovers. Nobody we can currently replace him with has the same skillset in terms of height, ball use and mobility on both offence and when defending a turnover.

He absolutely must play, at least while Dixon is injured, for development but also for structure.

It's why I fought so hard for Butcher. We played better with Butcher in the side in general despite his obvious deficiencies. He was a pack busting target who drew the ball in deep and drew defenders in with him and created space for his teammates.

Ryder does a lot of outstanding tap work. And to have the capacity to give our ruck a rest and put ryder in is a massive luxury. I dont doubt his place in the side for an instant!!

This isn't the All-Australian side where selectors try to jam 18 midfielders in. The positions on-field aren't as fixed as previous decades, but you still need a certain number of players who can perform certain roles. And some of those roles require height or speed. So we need to pick taller players and have enough fast ones. Even if they are players 26 and 27 on form, not 21 or 22. We can point to multiple losses every year (even in the backend of 2014), where picking 'next best player', rather than 'next best player that fits the needs of the team' has cost us games.

If these mooted selections are true, then it appears the penny is finally dropping for Ken. Although not for all the 'Drop Marshall!', 'This is why we can't have nice things Port' brigade that still has some members here (though thankfully many less these days).

Straight find/replace job from the old Butcher thread

He's a totally different player to Butcher and the deficiencies at this stage are totally different.

We still haven't developed a KPF since Tredrea. If we want that to continue (and have our form take an immediate hit and a long term hit because of it), we can needlessly drop Marshall.

Even without Dixon, once Ryder ditches the helmet, Marshall should get less attention. At present Ryder is ineffective with the Helmet, so oppositions aren't having to double team him / play someone in front and clear space for Todd.
