I saw Billy against the Dogs as a strong leading target. I thought he showed promise, I assume he ground ball pressure is average

It's actually 6 years.
2014:
- Schulz, Westhoff, Butcher
- Butcher dropped after 2 goals in 2 games
- Replaced by Sam Gray

2015:
Schulz, Westhoff, Butcher
- Butcher lasts one game (a game where he kicked more goals than Westhoff and Schulz combined I might add)
- Replaced by Redden (fat, unfit ruckman that had been injured for 3 years, and never played another game).
- Down to two talls by rnd 3
- Butcher as 3rd tall makes a comeback in rnd 20 when we are 6-12. We beat a rampaging GWS and win 4 on the trot.

2016:
- Dixon, Schulz, Westhoff
- Schulz does his back in rnd 1, plays two more games for his career
- Schulz replaced by Sam Gray in rnd 2, Butcher having kicked 4 in rnd 1 in the SANFL
- Butcher doesn't get a game until rnd 17 when we are out of finals contention. Kicks 4, BOG. Kicks a third of our score next week as we get trounced by Sydney in the wet. Never plays another game.

2017:
- Dixon, Westhoff, Eddy
- Eddy kicks 3 goals in two games.
- Eddy is dropped for Jake Neade in rnd 3. Never plays again.
- We resort to playing Jackson Trengove as a negating tall forward, then give him away to the Bulldogs for free.

2018:
- Dixon, Watts, Marshall, Westhoff as wingman/utility
- Ryder does his Achilles before half time
- Rather than replace Ryder with a ruckman, we use Dixon in ruck and replace him with Jake Neade for rnd 2.
- Jake Neade plays 5 games without kicking a goal.
Marshall and Watts kick 14 goals between them by rnd 2, then about 5 more for the rest of the season as structure goes out the window because our young ruckman 'aren't ready'
- Frampton plays 1 game in rnd 23 when the season is shot. Even though he's not ready, he takes 4 contested marks and kicks goals as a forward ruck.

2019:
Ryder, Marshall, Westhoff
- Marshall kicks 1 in rnd 1
- Marshall kicks 0 in rnd 2 in the wet. Ryder and Westhoff also kick 0.
- Marshall dropped for Sam Gray.

In 2014, Butcher was a 22 year old 20 game, 30 goal KPF coming of a long injury.

In 2019, Marshall is a 21 year old, 10 game, 15 goal KPF coming off a year where both his parents died of cancer.

They both got dropped for Sam ******* Gray.

Our KPF depth is:
32 Westhoff (Utility, Beard)
31 Ryder (Ruckman)
29 Dixon (Glass Ankles)
22 Frampton (Ruckman)
21 Marshall
20 Ladhams (Ruckman)
19 Hayes (Ruckman)

Let's play Sam Gray instead. He has such a high ceiling, and will definitely fill the hole at full forward in a couple of years time.
Jesus. Wept.

Even the talls have to play small to get a game.

Also inside 50 marks are a bonus now, good thing Scott Hodges isn't playing now. That 154 goals season would be played down for not enough pressure acts

If Hodges were playing Ken would have him on the half back flank.

Exactly.

There are two ways of creating spread across the field:

1) Run from your midfield/defence

2) Leading up the ground from your key forwards into space

Marshall should be playing as a lead up forward and creating spread through providing options for the defence - but he's not at the moment.

I think Marshall brings a lot of benefits to the side, but I think he's out of form at the moment and needs to find touch in the SANFL. I don't want him taking huge grabs or dominating...I just want him using his speed to create separation on his opponent and putting on the pressure in the forward line that is required. Ken has always brought back Marshall when he's been in good form.

I'm not putting anything aside to be contrarian. I've been consistent with one key element:

No passengers.

P.S I would have dropped Bonner before Marshall, but maybe the coaches believe that the reason Bonner was so poor was because Todd wasn't providing the option necessary for him.
I agree with the no passengers part but take a look at Ryders stats the last fortnight.

Frampton and Marshall are alike as much as Sam Gray and Marshall. If the point is to preserve structure, Billy is NOT the answer.
Tall forwards are expected to take contested marks and kick goals. If Ken truly sees Marshall as a vertically-gifted small forward then we're really f•cked.

At least it might make it easier for Ken to select him again.

Marshall didn't exactly play well in any of the pre season games either, i'm really scratching my head as to why this has come as such a shock. Is it because the replacement is Sam Gray? Not because Marshall was dropp[ed.
Yes

It's because the replacement was a small, not necessarily because it was Sam Gray. If it was Aidyn Johnson or whatever, same problem. Sam just cops it harder than most because thanks to Ken Hinkley he's become the poster boy for dumb structure-killing selection decisions.

It's because Hinkley has impossibly high expectations for the talls that he is obligated to have on the list, and ridiculously relaxed standards for every two-bit small he takes a shining to.

It also smacks of Hinkley throwing away his old toys because just because he's got some shiny new ones to get all gooey about in press conferences now.

Averaging 20 hitouts, 1.5 tackles, 3.5 inside 50s, 2 one percenters, 2 clearances, 2.5 marks (1 contested), 2 goal assists, 5.5 score involvements?

He's doing ok for playing with a helmet. Got himself to some great positions.

Marshall is averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.5 inside 50s, 0.5 one percenters, 0 clearances, 3 marks (0.5 contested), 0.5 goal assists, and 3 score involvements.

So not only was he not scoring goals, he wasn't setting them up really either.

Well I expect Marshall to ask for a trade end of season.

for being dropped after poor form?

I would have perservered with him this week and brought him to the wing to get him into the game in rd 1&2. Asking for a trade though is a big hissy fit, especially given he still hasn't had a break out game as yet.

What do you mean by "if?" Wasn't this clear from the start?

Marshall is a hybrid. He is able to, and is expected to, play both tall and small. That's why he is so special.

Yeah understand that but no goal return from big Paddy either, may be when he loses the helmet he will be more comfortable.

It will be interesting to see how Ken uses Ollie, Rockliff is in top form, wouldn't want to screw that up.

With wines coming back does that mean Boak will be moved to a h/f line, like him around the middle.

Who would've thought a ruckman would have more clearances than a key forward?
