Which he's not doing at the moment.

You're talking as if we should continue playing him regardless. I'll guarantee that Wines and Sam Gray will provide more of a threat to a tall defender than Marshall will in his current form.

I like the idea of Marshall in the team, but I'm not going to die on a hill for him based on his current level of output. It's that simple. You're playing this entire thing on paper - as long as we get X amount of games into Marshall, he'll end up as Y. That's not how development works. We're not asking him to develop in the SANFL as a key forward. We're asking him to go back and do the things that we know he is good at so he can get back in the side and get the experience necessary at AFL level.

There's no reason he can't provide second efforts, or put on pressure, or create separation from his opponent with his speed etc. That doesn't require AFL experience, that just requires the willingness to work. He's going to have ups and downs in his development cycle.

His output was perfectly fine in round 1. He wasn't a worldbeater but he was an important cog in the machine. He's had one bad game and he's gone. He's certainly had teammates get away with far worse and keep their spots.

We can keep having this drop early drop often attitude to key position forwards and we can keep scratching our heads and furrowing our brows at the fact that highly rated kids don't amount to anything.

Or, like with every other club, we can acknowledge that getting AFL level games into highly talented kids and backing them in is a requirement if you want to get them to their potential output.

It's not about X amount of games equals Y, it's about giving him (and us) the best chance of developing and being successful in the medium and long term. Giving him 1 bad game before dropping him is incredibly harsh and will kill his confidence.

I am just going to ask the question...

With Lycett in the side is the dropping of Marshall/Sam Gray selection as bad as it looks on paper?

To me it's not that bad and fully expect Ryder to have more impact up forward.
It is with Dixon out medium term.

Our key forwards are now Ryder, who will play 2nd ruck to Lycett, and Westhoff who is a roaming tall utility.

If Westhoff swings back or either of our rucks are on the bench, we get real short up forward really quickly.

Was desperately trying to be positive this year then ken pulls this shit again...

We'll struggle without Marshall. Just presenting and making a contest. He's had a slow start but you don't ****ing drop him. The guy needs as much confidence as possible.

Brisbane should win comfortably

A bit nervous. But as least we will get a reality check.

Let's hope we win

Looking forward to seeing sammy gray not make the distance from 25m out
Maybe Sammy will do the same as our other whipping boys, Amon and Boak, and prove everyone wrong. Maybe the new rules will suit him.

I like the fact that 3 times this year we have basically said stuff the AFL and releasing teams at 5.55pm Thursday ie 6.25pm EST so 7 news Melbourne can release the info "first" during the sports section of the news.

We have gone early and got the team out there for the fans to see well before that BS dead line.

Wonder if it has anything to do with mistrust of 7 Adelaide?

So what you’re saying is it doesn’t matter how shit Marshall plays, he should be picked no matter what?

And you think that is something that Ken should be forced into?

Are you, like, for real?

Excellent paraphrasing. You've summed it up perfectly.

Those are the only views that have been expressed on here.

Schofield on the news tonight made it sound like Wines will be spending a fair bit of time forward.

In that case Gray goes into the Amon role, relieving off the bench.

Good to see Garner get a taste. He is a fierce competitor.

You only have to look at Geelong and how they are handling Ratugolea. Not doing a whole lot himself, but he's giving them a target up forward and allowing their kids like Miers and Atkins to feed off the crumbs and make their forward line potent.

If 50-100 game veterans of the Hinkley regime in Gray and Neade looked all at sea in our invertebrate forward line, I'd hate to see how 3rd gamers Rozee and Butters go getting double teamed by monsters with 10-20cm on them.

PS I know the kids will probably fare better than the aforementioned, but it surely ain't going to help their cause.

I don't mind Sam Gray in Amon's role (although I prefer Amon in the form he was in). Thing is, I just dont trust Ken at all anymore. It's like we're all just waiting for the inevitable where Sam Gray is the only one deep in a 2 on 1 everytime the ball gets hacked forward.

And now he says our 200cm developing gun forward isn't even there to mark the ball. We're in bloody wonderland here.

As others have said, if Marshall needs to be dropped then why not play Frampton?

Marshall will get sfa from going back to magpies IMO. I'd prefer him to be learning synergies with Ryder, Hoff, Gray, Rozee and Butters for ****s sake. Not getting wacked around the head by some bush league hack.

Then he has an quieter day against Carlton when it rains and he's straight out to "find form" in the quagmire that is an SANFL forward line.

Let’s not forget he was concussed in the Melbourne game too.

Shockingly, 7 days later, he didn’t set the world alight.

Perhaps, he should have been dropped last week. Everybody loves Marshall at the club. He will be back soon. We are overreacting, as usual.

Is general disappointment and frustration at Kern using the forward line equation of 1 tall out = 1 small in for 6 years despite all evidence showing without doubt it doesn’t work overreacting ?

I really don’t think it is and goes to show he is more concerned with “proving” he is right about his tactics than Ws for the PAFC imo

What do you mean by "if?" Wasn't this clear from the start?

Marshall is a hybrid. He is able to, and is expected to, play both tall and small. That's why he is so special.
True, though I would like to see him think of himself as a tall much more often.

Perhaps channel Nick Rewiolt, though I am unsure of his tank.

There are too many arguments being thrown around. Some are better than others. Still, even though we got shorter, Marshall is NOT replacing Dixon; Paddy is.

Sammy had foot problems for the last half of 2018.

I'm good with him back in, but more as a replacement for Amon.

My problem is Todd being dropped. I understand that currently he has some issues, but:
1. Forward structure is knackered. Hinkley and Bass up to their usual tricks.
2. Young tall forwards need nurturing. I regard his dropping as an indictment on Cornes and Bass, particularly Chad. Even last week I felt that our talls were not being played as talls.

I am hoping that the simple reason is that last week was dewy, affecting talls, where we had to play wet weather footy to win.

And tonight is supposed to be dewy, so Todd with the form he is in and the slippery surface is out.

The proof will be if Todd is back in fast.

But if, as many of us fear and have seen before, this is Ken reverting to type after a couple of proactive games, lack of bravery trying to not lose rather than trying to win, then it seems that Schoey and Monty may not be our saviours and 2019 will be just like every other year.

You make the point for him to be dropped. We agree it was stupid to play him because you expect him to have a form problem after concussion. All the more reason to play him in the twos.
