Genuine question and genuinely not wanting to start a huge sh*tfight between Murphy supporters and the people who watch us play

What role do the coaches want Murphy to play in The side?

Generally the HF/FP is either there to kick goals, apply defensive pressure and help keep the ball in attack and force turnovers, or they push up and are then are setting up goals for teammates.

Murphy does none of these things to any high standard, his role seems purely to be an extra mid at stoppages around the ground so why not pick an extra mid if that’s what they want or pick an actual forward if they want that.
Yeah he basically is a stoppage mid, coming off the wing and you are right, playing a better quality mid is a better option.

A good position to develop a mid, ie Curtin.

Murphy does not play small forward, as some believe he does and his pressure acts are generally at stoppage. Which are low for his role.

He was an ok stop gap stoppage mid up untill last year, when our midfield depth started increasing.

I'm sure I heard Matthew Wright once describe him as "like having an on field coach"
His positioning and game IQ is pretty good. It is what got him to this level.

Skill base is poor.

I can see him being a coach when he retires.

Would be a good SANFL captain for us too.

His regular AFL days should be over though.

IMO that’s where we have to be utilising players like Pedlar, Rachelle and Rankine if they’re not playing exclusively in the midfield, and then we draft a genuine small forward who can apply defensive pressure and be dangerous around goals as well.

Murph is actually very good at stoppages, he is always on the move so when the ball finds its way near him he is a good chance to win a burst clearance. That said, it's pretty much his only quality and that is not enough to hold a position in the seniors.

He is definitely first class at selling polo's though and would be a walk up selection to the all Australian merch shop employees.
