McHenry’s major problem is that he doesn’t fully watch the ball into his hands so tends to fumble as he’s already thinking of his next step.

A classic example of this is in the third quarter when he hit up Fogarty then went past and was given the handball back, was already thinking of who to pass it to before actually controlling the ball.
And here I’m thinking he’s just no good👍

This is nonsense.
We all know cook is just in cruise mode at the moment, some would even say a passenger, probably will never be captain just part of the crew.
I thought Vader might have let cook have a bit of time on deck to find his feet before taking aim but we all know that ship has sailed.
Vader has fired shots over the bow and will go down with the ship.

In 8 of his (whopping) 17 game career his had 12-19 touches, which is around what you’d expect given his age and role.
He's played 5 games this year and managed 10+ disposals once, which was against North. He's been okay at times, the Carlton game wasn't terrible either, but he obviously needs to be getting more than a handful of disposals a game if he wants to hold his spot.

When you say "quiet game", almost every (AFL) game he's ever played has been a "quiet game". The only exception was last week, against Norf, who are barely a SANFL standard team.

I keep waiting & hoping that he will have a real breakout game, but game after game it's "quiet" with only a handful of disposals.
Probably time to bring in Shoenberg for Cook. Omit Smith until his body is 100%. Move Ned to sub, or bring in someone else for sub, eg Berry. These are fairly minimal changes or just tweaks, which is about right considering the win we have just had.

Cook needs to stay in until we make a decision on his future.

If we are extending him he needs to play every game. If we have made the decision not to be re-signed he needs to be dropped immediately.

So are you saying pick the team on political considerations rather than merit?
No he’s saying be logical about it, if they have seen enough from him play him, if they are not quite sure on him still, play him until you make a decision, he’s 4 years in not a new draftee.

I’m responding to the post that says zomg almost every game he’s ever played has been a low possession one.

Which isn’t true at all.

At least we’re not hearing about the good cook and the bad cook I guess.

Surely it's a guarantee Nick's will drop Curtin for Smith. We got lucky with a Curtin debut with smith injured. He will be back straight in. Probably another youngster dropped for Murphy, maybe cook. Gross
This thing that hasn't happened is gross, is it?

What are you going to do if you're wrong?

I'm OK for them to keep Cook in the team for a few more weeks, but he needs to start getting more involved soon. He clearly has the talent so happy for him to be given more time.

Agree - He looks a natural forward. I would at times to play him as a one out full forward as think he is a tricky match up for opposition defences as is too agile and quick for a pure tall defender and too tall for a small defender. As we saw in the Norf game against similar players in his weight/experience division - he was way to clever for them.

We really don't have many genuine agile medium sized forwards on our list.

Kid looks a real confidence player and needs to believe he has got it.

Cook has a ceiling he is taking his time to reach, if he is granted 50 games I dare say he will produce a lot more than Murphy and McHenry who have both played over 50 games and reached their ceiling
Those two hacks reached their ceiling in game 1..

We’ve wasted 150 games on them..

Yet their cheer squad in here want to focus on a young bloke who hasnt even played a dozen games yet…

“Drop him, drop him!!!… bring in my hero murphy!!”..

Murphy is the unflushable turd. We’ve all seen enough of his shite to know he’s an oxygen thief on the field.

Move on.

Sholl played well.
Let’s look at our real issues…
Jones just doesn’t get the ball enough but applies great tackling pressure.
Laird consistently puts his teammates under pressure with his disposal.
Ned just doesn’t have it. Fumbles, poor skills. Terrible, terrible player.
Smith is well and truly cooked.
These 4 are holding back the development of other players and therefore the team.
I do not understand the Nicks’ selection policy. Class wins you games not hacks.
Laird is not a hack . Otherwise agree

I’m a big believer in having guys like Berry or Crouch spend time on the half forward flank. They naturally hunt the ball and move it with quick hands. If Taylor can be that guy then great too.

I’d much prefer having one of those guys on a HFF than a shape keeper.

I love the idea of Cook, just not sure where I stand on the reality.

The problem here is shape keeping is such a pivotal part of the role and one that becomes more important as you're going down the depth chart. After all, you want to be overloading teams when you're attacking which leads to a position like this becoming a wing-lite kind of role - especially as you want a guy who can work their way into dangerous spaces and stretch defenses. Equally, you don't want to get burnt on rebounds. That said, as long as they're not painfully slow, I imagine most types would work here. Football does tend to be a generalist sport where the same skillsets work everywhere.

The idea with someone like Cook is great. He has those secondary skills to become a very good footballer. The problem is he doesn't have the baseline skills to survive at an AFL level. If he's not there now, he never will be.

He’s a wing man through and through.

I agree, it does seem to be Nanks end point right now seeing it's a very intriguing profile as a tall winger and probably lacks the damage in his game to be a top-tier HBF.

Cook is 10x as talented as McHenry and Murphy. On that basis he should be afforded 20 plus games to find out if he's worth persisting with.

Not one poor game.

One poor game? He's had 3 out of the last 5. Maybe 4 depending in how harsh you want to be on the Melbourne performance. This is a kid who is not performing against AFL calibre opponents.

There is not one prospect in the league who is worth 10 games, let alone 20 to see if they're worth persisting with. That's what SANFL/training is for - to show you're worth keeping around for another year. When it comes to the bigs, you've got to be performing at a click that locks your role down and makes you a best 22 member quickly (5 games is probably max). Kids who do that are worth persisting with, the ones who don't, aren't at this stage - or ever.

Right now, Cook had a stretch of games and now we should be thinking to drop and delist him at years end, seeing he's OOC. He's not it.

Man you make up some weird s**t.
What is made up in my comment?..

Murphy 101 games
Mchenry 67 games

So over a 150 games wasted on these two hacks that havent improved 1 iota since their first games.

Thats disgusting no matter which way you look at it..

What about my “Unflushable turds” comment?… seems pretty accurate to me.. over 150 games wasted is all the evidence you need to see that they wont go down the s bend.

“Oxygen thief”?.. on the money. Have you ever seen so much energy expelled for so little return on a footy field from both these lads?..

Or was it the fact that we have several posters in here that just love to take potshots at our under 20 game players but stay fxxkn endlessly silent when it comes to the form, and complete shite, guys like murph, mchenry, sholl, keays, smithers are dishing up nearly week in week out.. and have done for a while now..

You dont criticise young players that have less than 20 games under their belts.. you need to expect them to have bad/quiet games..

its your more experienced guys with more than 50, 100, 200+ games that you should be teeing off on when they are consistently shite.

Murph, mchenry, smith, keays.. these blokes..

Although Keays has been less damaging to the team in recent times.. mostly because they’ve finally got him away from the middle and hidden him in a forward pocket where he can “joe the goose” it up until the cows come home..

This is how I feel. He should get another six weeks, but it needs to happen if we're going to persevere.

I think Schoenberg is best 22 for us, so I'd be looking to bring him in.

I'd also like to see Jones in the back six, and try a few others on the wing - Taylor, Smith, Hinge etc.
