Correct, we'll be lucky to be 1-7 considering we have Carl, Adel, GWS and Hawks all coming up.

"Lucky" to be 1-7? You must really rate Carlton? Adelaide are on fire but we play well in Adelaide and should beat GWS.

I'm not sure we could have been in a position to play a home prelim, as in finished in the top two, without McPharlin playing those 18 games but ultimately we could have used him in that last one against the Hawks - who knows what could have happened.

The plan was definitely to rest McPharlin late in the season but Silvagni had a brain snap in the derby forcing us to play McPharlin when he should have been rested. Then McPharlin got injured and the rest is history.

McPharlin played one finals series in the four years Lyon coached him, and that was a close run thing given he struggled with injury at the end of 2013. His availability at the end of the year was always touch and go.

Would have been better giving a full year to A Pearce and seen what happened.

What played Pearce for a full year instead if McPharlin? You are kidding

Out: Suban(how the hell he was still in after the derby), Barlow, D Pearce
In: Blakely or Mundy(whoever is more match fit), Tucker, Grey

Grey takes over from Suban as the blocker/hard nut, Blakely or Mundy takes over from Barlow and Tucker plays as the wing or halfback

Deal done , no if or but that's it. At least in 5 year time when this player make it or not we invest time to develop them . it is up to them to prove they are next Neale/mundy or next suban/ C.Pearce.

this season without Sandi is a complete write off. None of Suban, Mayne, Barlow, D/C/Pearce, Deboer should play again this year.

It has to be all about the youth and development from here on, if we can finish last and secure a good draft pick, fantastic.

The biggest worry I have is that as the year progresses if Pav starts racking up more niggling injuries. I'd love for him to pull up stumps while he's still playing some good footy at one of our home games.

Most of the players I want to see in the team are on the injury list or (Tucker, Morabito) haven't played enough footy recently. I think the next 3 to 4 weeks will be painful.
We would be setting Blakeley, Hughes or Tucker up to fail if we selected them next week. The coach has already said Mundy is likely to not play.
For me, Suban needs to be dropped short term and I would replace him with Grey. Possibly Collins for Ibbotson but I've never seen Collins play.
Mayne, Spurr and Sutcliffe on my slightly longer term omission list, as players return from injury/get more game time, along with Barlow.

Crozier and Taberner have to stay in otherwise there's no point in selecting them in the first place. Langdon and Weller have been persevered with despite average performances in the first 3 rounds, today it finally started to click for them and they added a whole new dimension to our team.

Pretty much this. We have to persist, if Crozier is dropped I will be ropeable. Spuderner I couldn't care less about but we need the tall simply to prevent all the other forwards getting double and triple teamed.

The only change I would make is Suban out for Tucker. I don't really think there's anyone else who i'd really bring in who's healthy or match fit enough to replace D Pearce and Barlow.

Agree. Would love Morabito, Mundy, Bennell apeness, Blakely, Hughes to all play but they aren't fit.

This is correct, so therefore no change for this week IMO.

Talk about ditching/tanking is bullshit, we play as hard as possible for the finals at all costs. Finishing 8th and getting pumped by North, WB, Geelong or whatever overrated Vic Mob we play is far better than finishing last providing a good 5-6 newbies get a kick.

The mob up the road excel at the rotating off-year tank and have a belt at it the following year. That's not us.

Esse
People like Tropiano (Sandover medalist) and even Clint Jones must scratch their heads at how some of our guys like Suban get games
Essendon didn't want Jones for another year as he was a top up last year and they obviously didn't want him and why should we. We have enough of Tropiano's size and he hasnt been selected by any AFL club in past 2 draft years so that must be some sort of a pointer as to where he is at.

Coming last would be a major catastrophe for the club. Collingwood, Richmond and Port atm are just as worst as us. Pies are pretty horrid, losing to St Kilda then Melbourne is pretty embarassing for them as a club. And Port losing by 80+ pts against GWS is pathetic in itself. We should be aiming to get 10 wins and push for finals. We won't be getting picks and using them for 'best available', instead it'll be used aggressively to get McCarthy and perhaps Hogan. So tanking for picks really does nothing in terms of development. We're planning to be like Geelong in the off season and go after 20-25 year old types.

In no reality is finishing 8th and getting pumped better than finishing last and securing the #1 draft pick.

No one is saying that we won't be playing as hard as possible, you just play as hard as possible with young guys that may not be good at the moment but actually have a chance to show development and improvement.

Tbh, I'd take finishing last over scraping into the 8 and getting pumped in the first round of finals.

That won't happen though. We will get out of this slump and start winnings games. I don't have us for top 8 but we will be around the 10th mark

If we make the finals we'll be flying by that stage, we won't get pumped.

Why aren't Morabito, Blakely and Hughes fit?
They all had good pre-seasons and were going well when injured. If they are passed fit to return to main training group they are fit for selection.

No, trying to finish last is a dangerous game, it immediately infects the club's culture. Besides, if there is still a chance to appear in the finals I rather take that (even if we are out first round) than forego the experience (for players and fans). Do you think Port enjoyed their season last year, or that it helped them in any way?

Tanking for draft pics is a loosing game in the AFL, the draft is a crapshot where essentially noone has any clue what they will get (complete busts at No 1, superstars at numbers 15+)

That would be complete madness. Morabito has played one game in 2 years basically and has just had a week off after that and you want to bring him straight back in to AFL level? Blakely hasn't played for 2 weeks it will be three weeks by the time the game comes around and you want to bring him in to lay his second AFL game? Hughes is on the same amount of weeks off as Blakely and you want to bring him in fro his second game also?

I want to see a few changes as well but there is no way that this will happen.

I didn't say I wanted to bring them all into the team. I just question the idea that they aren't fit to be selected. Players always talk about how the majority of their fitness for the season comes from the early hard months when they do most of the endurance component. All these guys did the early work and Morabito had an absolutely stand out pre-season.
Guys like Fyfe, Hill and Ballantyne always come straight back into the first team after weeks out, players don't need to go back to Peel unless its to get touch. All the 3 we are discussing were in excellent touch when they were injured.
FWIW I wouldn't select all of them but I'd bring at least one in each week if they are good to go. They all have something to offer above what we are getting from the incumbents.
