I just don't see any real upside so would rather drop him than the younger more talented guys. Think his play today was OK but still not in our top 7, and that's his best game in 3 years.

I would give Freeman another week, maybe bring in walker for West or Martin who may need a rest.
Who are you talking about?

Depends on who can come in really. I'd be okay with no changes but I think we should go back to 1 main ruck vs Carlton - if that happens I'd be bringing Walker back for Freeman too. If Rocky is good to go obviously he comes back in. I think Hanley is still playing okay in the context of our side, we just mark him harshly because we know what he's capable of. He obviously has an ongoing niggle. I'd be keeping him in given the opposition quality eases up a little.

Gardiner is a toughie - I think the backline has been performing pretty well. Hard to know who'd make way for him.

robertson is 20... how does he have no upside and what 'younger guys are you talking about?

Keays and Mathieson. We need to bring Bewick in for someone. I would make it Robertson as he's the least talented in my opinion...So would rather put games in the other 2.

Not sure how you could drop Robertson citing talent and then talk about bringing Bewick in at the same time. Other than the occasional speckie, bewick is a role player at best, I don't see much talent there.

I think Hanley needs a rest. His hips look shot poor bloke. Rocky straight in for him. I'd prefer us to go with 1 ruck as opposed to 2 and I'd bring in an extra runner in Bewick to replace either Martin or West. Bastinac was poor today and hasn't had that big of an impact in the past 4 or so games. I'd be tempted to bring in Jansen for him who has strung together some handy reserves performances and was close to getting a game last week against the Demons.

So my changes would be:

In: Rockliff Bewick Jansen
Out: Martin/West Hanley Bastinac

Gardiner I believe was listed as out for 4 weeks on the injury list with that nasty finger injury so I don't expect him to return for at least a couple of weeks yet.

IN Bewick and Rocky
OUT Robertson and someone

Robertson will run and play hard but hes too mentally slow and lacking skills. The play on from the mark was classic , busted a gut to get there, makes an error and then butchers a handball when he can still get out of bother.
He wasn't on his Pat Malone there. Mayes coughed it up a lot. Young Robbo brought more than Basti I thought. Hanley is debilitated. Kicked an outside of boot right footer to effect, but at his best he would lay off a left footer without thinking. Concerned about rushing Rocky back.McStay looks regal in defence. Good on him. Bewick in - can kick a goal or two. Hawthorn have climbed the mountain.

Rushing Rocky back would have seen him come in against the Hawks.

Ins- Walker,Rocky,Bewick
Out-Martin,Bastinac, unlucky player.

I thought Martin was pretty insipid yesterday. No hardness at the contest and he went in soft at 50/50 balls. West is showing him up as a ruck at the moment. I think Walker offers more as a 2nd ruck/forward. Bastinac wasn't bad,but he hasn't been setting the place on fire and isn't offering a lot on the inside or outside at the moment. Robertsons skills were pretty average and his awareness is still an issue, but bugger me his effort to get hard ball and run sees him stay in for me.
I've been all for dropping Mayes most weeks, but he actually earned another game yesterday. Didn't panic when under pressure like he has been and actually flew for marks and got contested possessions. Hope it's a sign his game is on the incline.

martin/west combo does not work IMO both do not offer enough as forward options.

nick robertson definitely keeps his spot, loved his gut running and he took the game on. a few errors but as others have said, not on his own there and i loved how him and matheison stood up to 250 gamer jordan lewis. the attitude and competitiveness of these 2 along with mitch is terrific.

we looked too tall and cumbersome too often in the forward 50 IMO eg. freeman, martin, schache, lester should not all be in there at the one time.

even though freeman was pretty quiet yesterday i would give him another couple of weeks to see how he goes.

daniel rich may need to be sent a message that 1 week on and 1 week off does not cut it in the AFL at his age.

i didn't notice bastinac either although i have thought that before when at the game live, a lot of his good work is done in close and you don't pick it up unless you pay really close attention to him or watch the replay. i would omit him at this stage from the above reports.

ins- rockliff, bewick.
outs- martin/west, bastinac.

Bewick has been one of our best players this year.

Walker is a definate NO. 3 of his 5 goals came in the last quarter and were gifts. His overall game was shit. his stats dont lie. There are other talls/forwards that deserve promotion before Walker at the moment. Make him earn it or he will not respect playing senior footy

Would offer more than what Martin is at the moment,Martin is a passenger in recent times. He looks a bit shell shocked. I saw him go in half hearted at a few 50/50 contests yesterday.

The back line is one I would want to see given some time and consistency to really develop together as a working unit. To be a finals team in the future we realistically we need about 10-12 solid performers to allow for injuries and form over a season.

At some point Andrews will need to come back in but baring injury, I am content to see how we go with Cutler, McStay, Harwood, Bundy go as a unit for a while. I am willing to give Paine a bit longer and see what he can do. Together with Andrews and possibly Paparone or Gardiner, I think that group stand a chance at developing into a solid defensive group. We are short a really big spoiling KPD once Merrett goes but maybe we have to get creative in trading or hope someone like Skinner develops quickly. We lost so much with Clarke's retirement.

We really need another one or two good fast small-medium defender types too. Our back line isn't able to rebound quickly enough without speedy small running defenders. I am not sold on Mayes back there yet. And I haven't seen enough quality from CBeams. Hanley might help but is struggling wherever we play him right now. McGrath maybe? Our next group of players are all so young!!

It would be good to get a debut out of Skinner before the end of the season. He can't be far off a run in the twos.

What really stood out was his complete lack of second efforts in ruck contests. A bunch of times, I saw him stand on his haunches and watch Hawks extract the ball when he was in tackling range. West, by contrast, was working really hard and doing all those little things.

Bastinac was pretty passive too. For a guy who left North so he could play in the contest more, he hasn't really cracked in. I think he could do with being dropped to sharpen his effort and attention.

Outs: Bastinac
In: Rockliff (or Jansen if Rocky isn't ready)

The biggest upside for robertson is his mongrel and running ability. I thought he was great yesterday. Obviously skills arent the best but id take effort over talent most weeks. Particularly if the talents not really there.

Just curious. Who is this more talented young player you would bring in for robertson.

Hey guys, I'm not sure I'm ready to see Tommy Bell line up against us in a Lions jumper. If you guys could pass it on to the club that he should probably be rested for this game that'd be awesome. Cheers fellas :thumbsu:
Haha. Not a chance. Hopefully he can kick 5. Darn those home sick kids suck aye.

Nah this week we're hoping to see the Rocky and Bellwinkle Show.

I'm not sure if his best work happened on the other side from me, or it looked better on tv but I didn't see as much as his plaudits here after the game. Though we do tend to overrate our players on here.

I would bring in Bewick because he's a much better player right now and I just don't see Robertson making the list if/when we finally are competitive. I get why people stick up for him, he runs hard and gets involved. But there's a void of skill or great athletic ability to make up for lack of skill. I mean he's only got a couple of games now due to a big long run of injuries as it is. I'm not sure Leppa thinks he's up to it at this point.

I haven't seen you guys play much this year but i saw he got a few goals yesterday. Good to see he's playing some good footy. The kid can sometimes be a barometer, other players lift if he plays well.

All the best and good luck next week :thumbsu:

He is a weird player. Give him a 20 metre taeget under no pressure and he will miss. Give gim the ball 50+ out under some pressure and he will kick a goal.

Id suspect bewick will come in for a tall. Either martin west or freeman. I think we have been too tall the last couple weeks. Id have robertson cutler and bewick in the team to provide the run we lack.

Out: West
In: Green

Too tall up forward. Put Lester back in a third tall role.

Out: Bastinac
In: Rockliff (if fit)

Bastinac hasn't done enough. Rocky an obvious in if fit.

Out: Paine
In: Gardiner (if fit)

I like Paine but Gardiner can play his role better

Lucky: Keays

Hasn't done a lot. Could maybe bring in C Beams to play in his role.
