AWOL: Bastinac, Lester, Rich, Martin, Merrett. Makes it very difficult for the remainder. Best game so far for Schache. A bit of mongrel for a change but obviously a most disappointing last.

Out: West
In: Green

Too tall up forward. Put Lester back in a third tall role.

Out: Bastinac
In: Rockliff (if fit)

Bastinac hasn't done enough. Rocky an obvious in if fit.

Out: Paine
In: Gardiner (if fit)

I like Paine but Gardiner can play his role better

Lucky: Keays

Hasn't done a lot. Could maybe bring in C Beams to play in his role.
Gardiner is a few weeks away yet according to the injury list. What about Bewick?

I don't get the point of West. It's wasting a spot in the 22 and it just takes away from Martin. Sure Martin hasn't been great recently, but playing West only adds a further hindrance to him.

West should purely be a backup ruck in the sense that if Martin can't play and if Smith isn't ready we then play him. Playing West and Martin together is just stupid. Fortunately West will probably get a suspension this week; I have no faith at all in our coaching and I'd expect us to foolishly keep playing both if it wasn't for the likely suspension.

IMO. None of the reserves boys come in unless there is an injury. The team played well and Rocky is an automatic in if fit. Gardiner and Bewick have been good, But I want don't think they demand a spot.

In: Rockliff,
Out: Martin,

Harwood Merrett Paine
Cutler McStay Hanley

Zorko Rockliff Rich

Bell Schache Taylor
Keays Freeman Lester

Foll: West, Robinson, Bundy.

Robertson, Matho, Bastinac, Mayes

IMO: Martin needs a rest.

Thought Paine has showed a bit, he deserves to be persisted with. I thought Freeman done what was required of him, he deserves another shot too.

Robertson and Matho stay in the side. I love the way they have a crack.

Mayes was good I thought. Slowly building into some form the last 3 or so weeks.

I get the West point..Unfortunately he lacks the athleticism/mobility to be a backup to Martin..playing your rucks forward (resting) gives valuable rotation ( which the AFL have reduced), to our young midfield..2nd it takes away the oppositions extra tall from double teaming Freeman or Schache which sort of explains the Club going after Jenkins or Daw.. a 3rd thing to consider we may be looking at off loading West at the end of the season..If that's the case, better to get games into him to get some collateral for him...rather than languishing in the reserves where he becomes Dogpile..

Giving Freeman a run in the ruck every now and again probably isn't the worst idea given his tendency to go missing when playing forward.

I'd like not too many changes from Saturdays side, reward for hard effort , so maybe players coming back so someone needs to go.

I agree young Nick Robbo butchered the ball a few times , but he needs to be given some credit for a rejuvinated toughness out there and I bloody loved it.
He lacks awareness we all know , but he actually had more time than he thought yesterday, dropped it onto his boot even before he had it positioned right in his hand, so the kick was a mongrel, saw this happen twice ,but his best game so far.
I think he deserves more game time as Mitch Robbo needs another to bring it . A run of 2 to 3 games to get hopefully some awareness at this level , we might see what he has to offer, does everything else right . Just needs composure.

Bewick as someone said is a role player, if we had more role players we wouldn't be so disjointed or lost out there imo..
He comes in maybe for Hanley, he needs a rest in the twos to get some confidence or rest right out if his form is injury related cause he is the biggest butcher out there at the momement, really long way off his best.
West has to be the main ruck we had some taps to advantage with him there which led to some good clearances.
Rocky comes in if 100% fit, maybe Martin out , Rocky is better forward can rest.

Now the other thing which I don't see why we haven't this sorted yet is some decent structure up forward or for more accurately decent running patterns.
We had Bundy lead out creating a big hole behind him and no one leads into it, better teams do this. Gives the kicker a better chance to hit one on the chest. I'm no expert just an observation.

We play 3 talls currently. 1 needs to be leading up to the wings to be a target up there. Another needs to stay as the deepest forward working his way back towards goalas the ball comes forward. The other bloke needs to lead towards the ball carrier so there is a target ahead they can kick too. If we are winning the ball back around mid field these guys should be able to create space for each other.

When we have some fluid movement with the ball we create a lot of 1v1 with our forwards. It is when we are slowed up that we end up crowding each other and 2 or all 3 of the talls go for he same ball. Id like to see some more blocking and set plays in this scenario. Look to go top of the square or out towards the pockets, and let our forwards actually get in the way and help 1 of them get seperation instead of jumping all over each other. 3rd tall should be 30-40m from goal as an option incase everyne gets sucked to goal too much, and he can then transition into a more defensive position around the 50 if it is turned over or goes for a behind.

4 talks if you include Lester who plays tall.

Robbo will need to go to Bryce Gibbs next week. He's in cracking form

I agree. Robbo is really our best at negating opposition players. I sometimes wonder what we did without him. He really is the benchmark we need to have others rise to in terms of attitude and commitment.

I'd bring Jansen and CBeams in for Bastinac and Freeman. Play CBeams at half forward or on wing.
Rockliff for Keayes (who needs a rest).

West will most likely miss due to suspension I've heard anyway. Also I'd like to give Paine a few more weeks, deserves a shot so we can assess whether he goes or stays by the end of the year.

Sounds like all it takes is one good performance in the reserves and most people think we should make changes. If Rockliff is fit then bring him back in, if not then leave the side alone. I think it would be best if players like Jansen and Green put in a few good weeks and then get rewarded.

Green does have some runs on the board being our leading goal kicker for the past two seasons. Plus it's about team balance. He wouldn't be including just for one good game against the Gold Coast academy team.

I would like to see the ins be Rocky (obviously), Green (clearly good enough and has done his time in the reserves), and Bewick (if fit; he had been playing really well this year).

The outs are a bit more difficult, but I would probably go with Lester or Freeman for Bewick (if Bewick is fit) - I think we are too tall and the ball is coming out too easily from our forward line. Freeman played a good half against Melbourne but has gone missing since - he has a lot of potential and he takes some pressure off Schache, but 4 touches in a game is just not good enough. Lester shows good glimpses at times, but just doesn't impact the game enough either and is too slow to help keep the ball in the forward line.

I would then drop Keays for Green. Keays has shown a lot of good signs and I love his aggression, but Green has the runs on the board and his two games in the reserves have been very good it seems. I just think his speed will help keep the ball in our forward line.

Last one out is difficult, but at this stage it is either Bastinac, Mathieson, or Nick Robbo for Rockliff. Bastinac has the experience we need, but his output has been below standard. Mathieson has fantastic aggression and attack at the footy but obviously still needs to build his tank. Nick Robbo has both the tank and agression, but lacks finishing skills. It is a tough call, but it probably has to be Bastinac who comes out of the side.

If west missed for that im going to be pissed.

I miss Robbo and Belly :(

Two hard nuts that really crack in...and Bell has always liked a long goal from outside 50.

Hey guys, I'm not sure I'm ready to see Tommy Bell line up against us in a Lions jumper. If you guys could pass it on to the club that he should probably be rested for this game that'd be awesome. Cheers fellas :thumbsu:

Is Docherty not playing for you lot? Cause that'd be swell.
