I'm pretty sure that I highlighted Bennell was conspicuous in his absence from the play for the fortnight prior to the Saints game. His man wasn't actively hurting us in those games so I was saying lets see if he can get more involved.

Saints exploited Bennell as a weakness IMO...his man lead him to the contest and Bennell just found himself in no mans land time and again. The poster who said he looked lost and didn't understand the structures hit the nail on the head IMO.

Simpson dragged him plain and simple - he was a liability in a match that was being hotly contested. Bennell got subbed when we were ~6 points up give or take. Eagles then kick 5 goals to 1 in the remainder of the third quarter.

Bennell has got to get his head in the game - we are putting together a pretty handy backline with Hurn and Gov as preferred rebound kicking options, Nelson and Schoey playing tighter lockdown roles and Wellers and Shep offering running rebound. Bennell has got to offer something as a rebounding option or defend tight enough to allow Nelson to rebound - something I am sure Nelson has the ability to add to his game with experience. Otherwise I can see Bennell finding himself on the scrap heap.

At the moment I am hoping we might see a game or two into Paddy Brophy before the year is out. Clean hands, good wheels and the height to play as a rebounding 3rd tall (mk I Schoey mkII? )

Emac, Hurn, Wellingham, Sheppard, Schofield/Brown, Nelson/Butler, Barrass/Brophy could be a deep, exciting and flexible group of backs in the next couple of years with Gov playing forward or back as needs dictate :thumbsu:

Out : Yeo
In : Barass

Shepperd to the midfield (to try and hopefully do Yeo's role)
Selwood in to the 21
Bennell as the sub
Barass replaces Shepperd in the backline.

Moving Shep around is a terrible idea. Hes been played from pillar to post and could never get in a groove. Hits career best form, better move him....

Creative, but Sheppard just isn't nearly as good in heavy congestion as he'd need to be. Would get crushed.

With both Sheed and Yeo out, plus the opposition having more tall forwards than most other teams we've faced, I think we'll need to go in with a different game plan. This game is arguably the toughest we've had as far as figuring out a viable structure goes.

Doesn't Selwood make up for the loss of Sheed, he's certainly an upgrade (as good as Sheed has been), hopefully his fitness is up to scratch.

Then just give more midfield minutes to Lecras, Cripps and give Masten more inside role to make up for Yeo.

McGinnity will probably be sub.

I'm really looking forward to this game.

Will provide a great indication of where we're really at.

We have been abysmal against the Cats at Subi (oh and at Kardinia Park too) of late, so it would be great to turn the tables.

Is Bennell a delist candidate or is he just out of form?

He was one of our best for the first half of last year, and most of us couldn't figure out why he got dropped a few times in the second half of the year. He's been ok so far this season, without being in our best, also not the worst. I reckon it's too early to call for his head after a few below average games.

Not sure at this stage I reckon. Wellers has come into the back line and cut his lunch with style. He might come good when a clear role is established for him or maybe not. He clearly has some good attributes that could be good for the team.

At the moment he is an enigma wrapped up in a potato. I hope he sorts it out.

Shouldn't be too hard on Bennell , had a shocker of a knee injury and has done better then many expected .

Keep him ...., on his day he gives the team good run from defence , when he loses confidence however he does struggle but might improve with age .

May be you are correct. However, I would rather have continuity and find a solution from within than bringing in a bad ball user who will undo all the good work the other are doing.

Not delist worthy, he was a shining light at times last year with his run and carry. I think we have really good users out of the backline now, Bennell didn't fit that mould last week.

Nelson, Gov, Butler, Hurn are all very good kickers of the ball. Wellingham, Shep and Schoey are hit and miss but they have more than made up for it in other areas.
