We're a ruckman short there sk. If the entire load was left up to Hamish (being the only player there who's remotely big enough) Cox would rip us to shreds and The Big H would have the head bobbles by the 2nd qtr.

Cox being their most dangerous player makes that non selection of a comparable replacement for Hale, a major risk.

The only area Hale can compete with Cox is hitouts. Unfortunately around the ground, I would expect him to get smashed, Cox just too smart and knows how to get to the right spots. Further I just don't think Hale is good enough to even be a run with/nullifying ruckman against someone like Cox.

Other options though? Hmmmmm

Before throwing up names, have role for the player.

Smith and Gibson for Thompson and brown is easy, but after that we need to make sure all selections have a clear reason.

We need pace and skill in the middle, so why Sinclair over Urquart? We need a pure midfield type and Jess isn't that. Same for replacing Hale with Hansen. Can Hansen play in the ruck?

This is how Dean gets into these messes!

I don't agree, he is good on the deck and uses the ball better than a lot of other players in our team.

I reckon we would be a better side by putting Thompson back and releasing Pratt in to the midfield. Unfortunately, that is probably a bit too left field and attacking for our coach.

Does not have the tank to play midfield

We need two ruckman. Hale stays.

So apart from the two obvious changes you mentioned, I would bring in Gav for Power. Show some balls.

Show some balls.
I have no issues with multiple changes but we don't want to go overboard. We're in the 8, and playing like crap. Things will only get better. McIntosh needs a break. He's obviously not right and the week off will do him good. Smith and Gibson will be back for West Coast and with a bit of luck Urquhart and Hansen will start showing some consistency.

This is where Lidgey is going to be missed on here. The mornings after a loss.

and for all you people who thinks that Power will get dropped...well think again. He has been in our top 4 possession winners for the year and he wont get dropped for one poor game.He is also Laids pet.

I am not reacting to one loss. I have been questioning the blokes selection priorities for three years. Power is just an average footballer. Urquhart might be an exceptional one. To me, a coach that is gunning to be number 1 down the track and not just trying to scratch out a "good" loss makes that decision. Thompson did it. Clarkson sure as shit did it.

Having Power there and not playing Urquhart speaks to some of his biggest weaknesses as a coach. It shows a lack of long term planning, it shows a "near enough" attitude with obviously limited footballers, his insistence to fill a spot on the list with a failed footballer and his inability to develop young midfielders.

We drafted him at pick 20. He has improved 70% since last year. He is quick and kicks the footy like no-one on the list. He has top level potential. He has been good in the VFL. Now, in a team so limited in all these areas who simply cannot win the flag this year, it's a ____ing no brainer.

I concur.

Surely McMahon must come back in if fit?
A cool head, uses the ball superbly and is one of the best decision makers on our list, an area we could really do with a lift in.
He stood up at key times in big games last year and can play several roles.
Surely...

I'm not sure his injury is right yet. If fit, definate in IMO.

Maybe I had my eyes closed when Mc Mahon played but apart from being handy in some games, he didn't really set the world on fire. Talk of him replacing Edwards as a lead up forward just don't seem to fit the Mc Mahon I have seen. He makes good decisions and uses it pretty well but surely he isn't a certain inclusion without some VFL form behind him, which this year he certainly hasn't got due to injury.

I though McMahon was pretty impressive last year, showed great poise despite his inexperience.
And I'll take the guy who gets it a few less times but uses it well each time.

Although i dont think McMahon is the best player out of the current team he does have something of value as many have pointed out. Poise and footy smarts which we do lack against the better teams. He seems to play the percentages is good under pressure and just plays smart. Its diffiicult to improve footy awareness u either have it or u dont, and he seems too.

My last comment wasn't a dig at you, NB. Just an observation that I already miss him on days like today.. I agree completely with what you're saying, but I also think things need to be kept in perspective. Nobody was more impressed with Urquhart at the Brisbane practice match than me, but he needs to be consistent, as does Hansen. WTF is going on with McMahon?

Players like him have natural ability. I don't want to be seen as potting Laidley, but sometimes I wonder if his almost military approach is stifling their development. This is where Blight was brilliant.

Outs: Power, S.Thompson, Brown & Jo.Smith

Ins: Je.Smith (swap with power as harding was far more effective on the outcome of the game)

Gibbo( Straight swap with thompson)

Would love to see Urquhart and Mcmahon come in to the side for the remaining 2 as urquhart has the penetrating kick and mcmahon can play as a HFF who can use his footy smarts to advantage.

Jo.Smith will get dropped as JYD doesnt have any succession planning and simply because we were 2 big last night, we need to drop brown and get more runners in the side.

My 2 cents worth:

We are a side that continually has poor decision making problems with or without pressure.

We are too stop start and dont have the skills to play this game. if we go through the centre, play on and play first option footy when we say give a player the handball receive at full tilt we are a far more efficient side who can then create suspect defensive efforts from the opposition defenders as the opposition will be 2 slow to react

if we play this stop start shit, we will go nowhere and will just have oppositions flooding our I50.

Also all these people who say bring swallow back what a joke. as long as simmo and rawlings are in the side, if he plays our midfield will be even slower and will have even poorer skill and decision making traits. We need the right balance of inside and outside mids.

Dont worry bout jonathan brown, we need polished midfielders with penetrating kicks. we should be going hard for kerr and any mid who can break the lines and hit a player on the tit.

Also give matty campbell more midfield time. last night he regularly took on players and generally had a well weighted kick or a kick 2 advantage.

As soon as we become more polished in the centre and generate efficient and quick ball movement we will be a much better side out of sight.

I think we've been struggling at stoppages as well. We can bussle well but we really struggle to get clean take aways, we need to get better at using the handball, when in close, to free players out wide. Many of our clearances just come from the quick kick out of the pack, which can land anywhere.

We need another big bodies player who can play in the middle and set us up from the stoppages, the likes of which we don't have at the moment.

As I said earlier in the thread, though, I'd really like to see Urquhart play against the Eagles.

What should happen

In: Gibson, Sinclair, Urquart, Jesse Smith, Hansen
Out: Wells, S.Thompson, Grant, Brown, Hale

If you're looking at Wells for reasons why we lost last night, then you are looking in the wrong direction. He was pretty good...

Out of his 21 disposals - 8 inside 50's (the most out of anyone on the field for Adelaide or North), 2 goal assists (again the equal most on the field for this stat with Porplyzia) to go with his 3 shots on goal. 8 contested possessions and 13 uncontested - really it would be good to see a few more uncontested possessions, but this is a two way street as the number of times he ran past Simmo and others for the handball only to be overlooked for the high up and under pass...

He had a couple of clangers and the disposal efficiency was a bit down but he was trying to create and got sold into trouble once or twice (think the Hale handpass). The thing is he had 21 touches but nearly all of them had a bearing on the game - others could get 40 possessions and have less of an effect on a match (see Carazzo vs West Coast the other night).

From what I've seen Wells seems to be applying himself more with each game. His mental discipline has been very good the last 4 games or so but he needs to keep going. He is making the right noises now and one game sooner or later it will all just click. He will get the lucky bounce. He won't kick the ground shooting for goal. He'll pick up the ball off the ground at full tilt etc etc.

Ideal

Out: Brown, Power, S. Thompson, Hale (can afford 1 ruck v WC, Hamish v Cox 80% of the game it'll be)

In: Smith, Sinclair, Gibson, Urquhart

What will happen

Out: Josh Smith, S.Thompson, Lower

In: Jesse Smith, Gibson, Sinclair

In: Je.Smith, Gibson, Urquahart, Hansen
Out: Brown, Watt, Power, Jo.Smith

Then will have a team something like this
B: Pratt, Firrito, Gibson
HB: Je.Smith, Petrie, Urquahart
C: Lower, Harvey, Harding
HF: Thomas, Hansen, Jones
FF: Hale, N.Thompson, Grant
RR: McIntosh, Simpson, Rawlings
INT: Campbell, Harris, Wells, S.Thompson

Something like that. Doesn't it look so much more............talented?
Btw I like that interchange bench.

IN: Je Smith, Gibson, Urquhart, McMahon (if fit) or Sinclair
OUT: Power, Brown, Jo Smith (stiff but we need more run, hope he gets more chances), S Thompson (he'll get more chances)

Ross and Riggio should also be thereabouts, especially if any of the others don't come up.

Jesse Smith and Gibbo definitely in.

I don't know who will miss. I would push on with S.Thompson and Josh Smith.

Brown deserves to miss.

It's probably time to take a punt and drop Watt, Brown and Power, bring in the above and cap Gav. Let's see if the weekly BF posters are correct and gauge how we go without those three guys.

No-one else really deserves to lose their spot, and will be good for the week off.

However, its really a game we should be confident of winning so the opportunity is there to blood some young'uns.

Sinclair will be stiff again.
