Can't think of a better oppourtunity to play Smith in the coming weeks than against West Coast, we need to groom this guy as a CHF, watched him a lot in the WAFL, has the means.

I spoke to one if the coaches today and Hanson has "shown signs in the last two weeks" Reading between the lines they have not been happy with him as yet.

Thompson was very very poor tonight. They tried to hide him everywhere in the 3rd qtr when he should have been on the bench. 5 goals came directly from his man. Sinclair or Gibbo should be in for him.

Thomas got some junk kicks hanging out on the wing by himself but was useless in the forward line. His kicking still sucks but he did take an overhead mark without dropping his head. Maybe he is on the way up but I doubt it very much.

Flash has to spend more time up the field as this is when he is at his best.

Thommo is slow and unfit. If Eddie hadn't broken his leg I would drop him. I'd like to see him start on the bench and play Josh Smith at FF. The guy is a decent unit and has lost 11kg this pre-season. The reason he was overlooked in the draft was because he was too fat but he's done the work!! Thommo is not the future (nor the present) so lets see what the kid has.
Ridiculous. Thompson is our leading goal kicker, a reliable shot on goal and probably our best contested marking player. PLUS he's coming back from a knee reconstruction.
Josh Smith was serviceable last night but compared to Thompson he's got a F**king long way to go.

We are going to have to combat Chad Jones, McKinley, Kennedy and Lynch down back. Once again our lack of defensive talls will be shown up.

What I'd like to see

In: Smith, Hansen, Gibson, Urquart/Riggio

Out: Watt, Brown, S. Thompson, Power

Grant and C.Jones on notice.

Wundke and Obst to be considered for promotion if Smith does not stand up.

Swallow and Ross to be considered after the WCE game as well, dependent upon form.

Line up:

Hansen Petrie Gibson
Je. Smith Firrito Pratt
Wells Simpson Harding
Campbell Jo. Smith Jones
Thomas Thompson Grant

McIntosh Harris Harvey

Hale Rawlings Lower Urquart/Riggio

Spud gets Kennedy
Petrie gets Lynch
Hansen gets McKinley
Gibbo can take Chad Jones.

Wundke and Obst to be considered for promotion if Smith does not stand up.

Wundke and Obst are both rookie listed so Smith would have to literally not be able to stand up.

BTW, does anyone know if we have promoted any rookies with the injuries to Edwards, Tarrant, Grima et al?

Promoted as in promoted on to the senior list.

Exactly.

They can't just promote a player through form. Considering we have four players on the long-term injury list I would expect one of them to get a run. Just not at the expense of Smith.

If you're looking at Wells for reasons why we lost last night, then you are looking in the wrong direction. He was pretty good...

I thought he was very ordinary and racked up easy touches in the last quarter when the game was over.

I agree, give Smith a good run of matches and let's see what he can do.

It's just that i'd like some back up if Smith isn't presently up to it, and his confidence is getting shot to pieces.

Yeah Billy, but the point of my arguments is that even if Smith never gets it going, Obst and Wundke aren't prospects to take his spot because they are rookie listed. A rookie can not be promoted to the core senior side to replace a player low on form, only if they are approved to replace a player that is ruled out for the year through injury can they be promoted.

Obst? Wundke?

Come on. I think we are we should make some changes and bring in some quality young fellas into fringe positions, but 1st year talls from a rookie aint going to solve our problems (which aren't forward or back anyway).

Midfield and flankers. Urquhart, Riggio, Jesse Smith, Ross. All good kicks, all talented.

I know that mate.

Didn't you read this:

Once that is done we have the option of doing this:

Re - The hypothetically promoted Obst/Wundke.

Apologies if I wasn't clear enough.

Obst? Wundke?

What if Josh Smith goes down or starts getting flogged? Who will hold down CHF?

Like so many other of his team mates also.
It's easy to look ok when the opposition has taken their foot off your throat.
Stand up and be counted when the game is there for the taking, not during junk time.

Yeah, no apology necessary, just slightly unclear.

All these hypotheticals.

What if Josh Smith goes down or starts getting flogged? Who will hold down CHF?

Did I miss the game where Josh Smith held down CHF (or in position) at this level?

Jones, Thompson, Grant, Campbell, Thomas. If we need another medium type, McMahon. If we want another tall who can mark the footy, Hansen. Or play Hamish forward for more than 10 seconds a season.

Obst and Wundke? Geez.

I agree with all that, but that's not what we are talking about in this instance.

Umm, ok.

In: Adams, Tarrant
Out: Simpson, Thompson

Aaron Edwards hasn't done anything wrong over the last week... I expect him to line up in place of Boomer;)

Fair enough, Jones could play as a small CHF and it wouldn't hurt him to get out of heavy traffic. This still serves no long term solution.

Obst and Wundke? Geez.

CHF is not a position I consider out of bounds in regards to playing kids and trying things. The midfield isn't the only area we need to look at going forwards.

In: JW Smith, Gibson, Urquhart, Hansen
Out: Brown, Watt, Power, Josh Smith

Then will have a team something like this
B: Pratt, Firrito, Gibson
HB: JW Smith, Petrie, Urquhart
C: Lower, Harvey, Harding
HF: Thomas, Hansen, Jones
FF: Hale, N.Thompson, Grant
RR: McIntosh, Simpson, Rawlings
INT: Campbell, Harris, Wells, S.Thompson

Something like that. Doesn't it look so much more............talented?

Yes, it does Paddy. However, I think Gibbo has to come in for S. Thompson, not Watt. I'm more than happy to acknowledge Watt's limitations, but believe he generally does the job asked. Like Harding, he has brain snaps. Scott was nowhere near strong or tight enough yet.

I agree, and have done for quite some time, that Brown needs to be ditched. Period.

I think what you're suggesting here with the inclusion of Urquhart and Hansen, is similar to NB's comments below, which I agree with:

Power is just an average footballer. Urquhart might be an exceptional one.

To me, a coach that is gunning to be number 1 down the track and not just trying to scratch out a "good" loss makes that decision. Thompson did it. Clarkson sure as shit did it.

Having Power there and not playing Urquhart … shows a lack of long term planning, it shows a "near enough" attitude [and an]… inability to develop young midfielders.

It's about lifting the sights of what is possible, and away from the typically short-term, defensive mindset to something attacking and building for a Premiership, not simply competitiveness.

Still shits me that this is the coach who said, at the outset, he was ignoring birth certificates. Rubbish! He favours age and experience over youth, in recruitment and selection, I believe, on most occasions.

First of all, would people stop comparing Josh Smith (a first gamer) to Thommo? That is ridiculous!

Gibbo and JWS are automatic ins. I would also add Urquhart and McMahon.

So who goes out?

Brownie, S Thompson, Power and Hale.

That gives Josh Smith the opportunity he deserves and keeps two talls in the forwards. Josh can also play in the ruck as he proved against Adelaide in the last quarter. He may not get every hitout, but he then competes for the ball far better than Hale and is much more mobile around the ground.

Adding Urquhart, JWS, and McMahon give us a much better rotation through the midfield. We can add Campbell and even Turtle to that rotation and we can constantly keep speed in there to give us more than Wells that can run and carry!

McMahon is versatile and can be played back and forward as well. We need to add versatility to the playing group.

The other possible switch (from me, not saying it will happen), is Swallow in and Harris out. Harro just isn't up to his own standard from the past couple of seasons.

Depending on match ups, and if you really wanted to make a bunch of changes to shake people up, you could bring Hansen in for Watt. Watt doesn't use his body effectively anyway, so you add a player with a huge motor and again, more versatility.

We really need to bring in some midfielders who have an attacking aspect to their game. We have Harvey (who performs week in week out) and Wells (Who performs for 5-10 mins a game). Apart from that we are riddled with defensive minded mids who have below par foot skills. Last year we played attacking football and it worked. This year we have gone backwards. We are the only club who doesn't play on after a mark and it makes us look slower than we really are. It is time we started blooding our youngsters because it seems to me that North are the only club that don't. Bring in Urquart, bring in Riggio, Hansen, McMahon, Ross. Surely there is more upside to these guys than Brown, Power, Watt. And for the love of god, get Lower into the midfield so Swallow has no chance of returning. You need composure in todays game and what Swallow lacks, Lower has in spades.

Agree entirely, time for a shakeup and change of direction. More attack & run - we have pace and flexibility to burn, it's time to use it.

In: Gibson, Jess Smith, Urquart, Hansen
Out: Brown, Watt, S Thompson, Josh Smith

Emerg: McMahon, Josh Smith, Sinclair, Swallow, S Thompson

Yep, I like the suggestions and the thinking jschwag, particularly if McMahon is fit.

Hadn't noticed Smith rucking, but it is something I'd be prepared to try and with Hale's performances, surely it isn't a big risk. (Not saying Josh has "it", but it's worth seeing what's there.)
