Can you play both Clark and Taberner. Both have been out injured and lack game time
Taking in 2 underdone players has trouble written all over it.
Clark can ruck and pinch hit in the forward half so Clark in and Tabs to wait his turn.

I really want Tabs in, otherwise we're going to have an under-pressure second string midfield trying to hit a short forward line on the chest all night.

They're going to need some marking targets to use as a get out of jail card and we can't be bombing it to an outnumbered Pav every time.
Agreed, we need to start getting games into him. He can learn from pav and provide the 2nd forward option. Has to get games this year as will be likely be first string next season.
I can also see Simpson taking that other pocket position

I'm not so sure about that. They have no ruckman, Clarke can cover Carlisle and Daniher for long periods and we put Sandi forward for more of the game than usual. It might actually confuse their planning to have Sandi out of the ruck for long periods since they were probably going to concede the taps anyway.

Are we absolutely sure Clarke will play, though? I know he was named on the field, but I was under the impression there were still doubts on his ability to run out a game.

Sandi couldn't really play the roaming role that Tabs would though. I'm just wary of not replacing Mayne with a decent target option, not that he's been in any sort of form at all.

So who plays the 2 forward spots we lose out of those inclusions?

Tabs or Simpson have to play. Probably tabs

C. Pearce has played forward well before - just roll back through some of his game during 2012.

Has a great ability to find the ball in the marking 50; and who can forget his long bombs through the big sticks from 55 metres out?

I'd assume Clancee will come in to cover Ibbo's role. I doubt we'll see him playing up forward.

Normally I think it's a stupid suggestion to have Sandi anywhere except in the ruck, but in this case Essendon have no recognised player there. If Clarke can't beat those two in the ruck he isn't worth his wage.

But Ibbotson came back to play Dawson's role last week, and now he's back. I doubt we'll have the opportunity for a player to carry out the loose man role for some time.

That's why I said reference 2012; Pearce can play a variety of roles where he's needed. Just because his last spot was in half-back doesn't mean the same will happen this year!

It'll be his first game back though, with doubts over his fitness to run out an AFL game.

Also I wouldn't be too keen on surrendering our advantage in the ruck by taking Sandi out; our mids are going to need all the help they can get.

Maybe, but if I had to put money on it, I'd say we're likely to see him running out of half back and having the occasional stint in the middle.

Agree it is robbing Peter to pay Paul, and I'm not saying have him forward the whole game, just more than we usually do for the reasons discussed. I just see this as preferable to Taberner who comparatively will give Essendon no headaches.

Although it'd be nice to have another marking target in our F50 by having Tabs join Pav and Clarke (I'm assuming Hannath is out), I think it'd be suicide from a pressure perspective. Dons are pretty comfortable handling bombs from what I can remember... I don't think adding Tabs would stretch their defense enough, and they'd kill us on the rebound.

My stab at a forward line:
HF: MDB, Pav, Suban
FF: Croz, Clarke, Balla

Suban to play predominantly half forward, and rotate into the midfield with Sylvia. Sylvia to play onball, but rotate onto the HFF with Suban. MDB to remain in his usual spot as a pressure forward to help provide more direction with Mayne and Walters out, but playing a little higher... and matching up on Watson at stoppages. Croz to provide an additional marking threat where he can. Suban to use his accurate kicking into our F50.

Dons have been doing well retaining the ball. We need to keep the pressure on them to force turnovers, and improve our clearance work (particularly centre) to get the ball moving in the right direction. A smaller forward line should make it more of an arm-wrestle/scrap, and that's what I think we need to do against the Dons to have a chance of winning.

EDIT: Just checked the line-ups on AFL.com. 4/6 not great guessing, but not terrible. Who knows how they'll actually shape up.
