Changes vs Essendon

I know people love Arch(so I do) but he can't afford another game like that or we won't see him play afl again this year.
he needs a decent crack at it though, yeah he had a bit of a shocker but we have to give him a chance or two to settle in the side.

It would be great to preview palmer and harvey before the year is through

I hope these changes threads don't start becoming proponents of putting out an inferior team as "the year is over", subtly suggested tanking.

There is nothing less Port Adelaide than that.

Remember AO in 2011. A win that got us Wingard. The last round draw in 2012 which got us Wines. Go hard to the final siren. Make your own destiny. We do not roll over, have high picks fall in our lap, and expect success.

Neither of those results got us those players, they could only have cost us.

All of our planning from here needs to be with 2016 in mind. If that means we put out a few fresh faces and put some senior guys in for surgery then so be it. Our season is stuffed beyond repair.

Could've? What a strong argument.

Football karma isn't an exact science, but the fortunes of Carlton and Melbourne do lend some creedence to the study.

Palmer and Austin are players who we genuinely rate. O'Shea, Neade and Young have all had a reasonable shot and Ah Chee has areas of his game that need work as well. Palmer and Austin getting a run at the expense of any of those players won't be to the detriment of the side.
White you would think would need another week on the " Making sure hamstrings are 100% and then one more week principal"

Agree - I'd say Ahchee is a far worse kick than Logan.

Arch is a far better handball though :)

I think Arch can become a higher impact player at stoppages than Logan was, closer to Wines/Young in the type of play than to Logan. His kicking isn't great but this year in our group that tells you absolutely nothing.

Must build strength and fitness the next pre-season or two though. Let's see if there's a footy brain in there as well.

In: Pittard, Harvey
Out: O'Shea, Stewart

Intrigued by the idea of Moore in for Lobbe this week as well ;)

Yes, because Harvey is on the way to a Ken Farmer medal this year.
And I said to play Harvey? You blokes from the Butcher fan club are becoming more delusional by the day.

I'd give Pittard and White 1 more week off (Pittard was in a moonboot and White is only doing light training) and bring Jonas back through the Maggies.

lol do you guys actually want to play Harvey/Butcher forward instead of Ryder? Desperately need another key forward, Ryder has a break out game up forward, nup play him in the ruck. Then there's the fact Harvey went goalless last week. Same with Butcher he's been playing back, I'm a huge fan but I just don't get it.

I don't care who plays, but as I'm travelling from Perth to be at this game I want 22 players in the side who will fly the Port Adelaide flag. No more of this nice footy and club crap, I want some mongrel and the boys to play angry for a change.

If Lobbe, for whatever reason, keeps being a centresquare bollard, potentially.

Ryder sole ruck as he did his best work with Essendon (with a chopout from Trengove/Harvey) with Harvey playing as a foil to Schulz.

We've got to have a go at some stage and workout what the list can do in what is a bust of a year. We can't be going into 2016 still wondering whether this player or that player can do a job because we're continually rotating Ah Chee/Neade/Young out for Colq/Moore/S. Gray.

Face it, with a record setting 3 more goals across the year, after Butcher has been playing back for the last month, is not enough demonstrated goal kicking form to warrant selection ahead of Butcher on form. Then it goes to who is more physically prepared, where Butcher has a few paddocks on Harvey.

Those who have written Butcher off are becoming more delusional by the day, even Shaw's name is being thrown up as an AFL in before John. The injured guy.

Ryder has never kicked more than 4 a game, only 1 year where he has avergaed more than a goal a game.

He is not a full time forward. Even this week, many of his goals and marks were taken with Lobbe in the vicinity to take heat off, playing both rucks forward at once. He is not the one out full forward we are looking for.

I never said to play Harvey. Harvey is not ready. Butcher is not up to it. Neither should be played at this point.

You aren't. Many others are. I'm arguing against it.

Surely though, if the season is as over and everyone is telling me, it is time to find out if players coming out of contract, with AFL experience in our most fragile position, have anything to offer that would warrant a new contract, instead of a guy hardly tearing up the track himself, who is definitely going to be around next year?

I can't see any way Butcher is at Port next year. Rightly or wrongly cards are marked.

Agree

but I think there is a distinct difference between tanking and building depth, building for the future and focusing the medium term rather than the next 2 and a half hours.

There is nothing more Port Adelaide than "We exist to win Premierships" otherwise it would be "We exist for this weeks challenge"

You gotta play a Harvey or a Palmer as a sub if they aren't up for a full game at least a couple of times before seasons end. The experience and the benchmark that they'll find by actually playing is invaluable going into a pre-season.

I watch the management of Daniher and his inability to hit a barn door but his continual play and Casbolt(however it's spelt) and compare that to our development of Butcher and I worry for our future forwards. The same with Hawkins when he couldn't kick to save his life and even Cloke to this day, the clubs backed them in, Daniher at the moment is pot luck if he kicks a goal, no doubt he'll hit all his shots this week though.

Correct. That's why we have to work out whether Ryder can be a 7/10 forward instead of 8/10 ruck. If he can't, we have to trade one of Ryder/Lobbe at seasons end. Keeping one for emergency is pointless as they take up way too much salary cap for it to be viable.

Working out what Ryder can do is equal if not more important than seeing what Harvey can do as Ryder is a proven AFL talent.

But do we not have a decade or so of exposed form on Ryder?

We know his best footy came at Essendon as lone ruck. We know he's been capable of perfectly good cameos in defence and attack in a given week.

We know nothing of Harvey at AFL level in any capacity.
