Against the Lions, we had 12 players under 100 games (Lions had 9), and 8 players on 150+ (Lions had 13). They had over 25 extra games of experience on average per player.

Against the Crows, we had 9 players under 50 games, to their 5. The rest was more balanced, and average games overall similar.

For those suggesting playing the youth, that is literally what we have been doing. A lot has been said about how young Freo are, but their side that beat the Hawks only had 5 players under 50 games, just for reference. Where their average comes down is the fact Fyfe and Walters have stopped playing, so they had 0 players on 200+ games.

We've put games into Davidson, Dolan, Hynes, Cleary, Gallagher, Sanders, Darcy, Freijah, Garcia, O'Donnell and Khamis, plus a few cameo appearances from Buss, Arty and Poulter. All are still under 50 games. That IS playing the youth. Go any further with it and we're actively hurting ourselves in the process. You generally don't get "good" consistent output from a player before they hit 50 games, with rare exceptions like Darcy.

The only untested players left are Croft (way too raw, miles off it), Jaques, Kennedy, Smith, Walker and Sellwood. The closest of that lot is Sellwood, and even then I'm not so sure he's quite ready, though I do expect he debuts before the end of the year. There's really no more we can do to get younger without actively tanking. Really the only change along those lines that I see happening in the coming weeks is Sellwood in for JJ

Although you did mention the likes od Jaques ,Kennedy Smith, Walker and Sellwood to me it's worth a try in particular Sellwood i really like to see what he can offer i also hear he's hard hedger at the ball so now that the season is over why not give thses players some game time and you'll have them ready for next year when they srart pre- season

Ed has been superb in the middle bit I am leaning towards putting him back to half back. We have midfield coverage. Bont libba Kennedy freijah and sanders to play our 5 mids. Ed defensive side is good and can be super damaging whilst given us better support down there.

I'd rather keep Freijah in defence, atleast for another 12 months. Red is our only point of difference in the middle.

Garcia is an odd one for me. Hel looks like he belongs but just does not too enough. I reckon we give him a good run at to prove one way or the other. We know McNeill and VDM are not up to it and they keep getting games. We are missing Cody big time.

Makes no difference what changes we make, we’re in a no win situation this week from the point of where we stand as a team. The 4 points is really the only positive.

Demolish Essendon as expected and all it does is reinforce the narrative around who we are, just flat trackers. Bring on the Giants and Freo, but even wins against them won’t change the view that we can’t get over the top of the heavy hitters.
Just one win in those close games during the year would have changed the perception.

Changes perception yes but also belief which I think is also an issue

we have forgotten how to win those games and have learnt how to lose them.

Yep, you’re right, that’s a bigger issue.

I haven’t seen or read the play “Waiting for Godot” but I know how it ends. If I was writing it today I would title it “Waiting for Garcia”.
I am not sold but I think we have to force the issue given where we are. Play him for the rest of the season. If he has that long promised “breakout game”, great we have got ourselves a player. If he doesn’t at least we know and we go to the draft and give ourselves a chance of getting a player. Get something out of the rest of the season rather than this rinse and repeat rubbish . ( bring in players X,Y,Z, only give them one week, drop them for a while, start all over again)

Out: JOD, Poulter, Sanders (he lacked intent and Ashcroft ran right past him numerous times)
In: Busslinger, Khamis, Dolan.

McNeil to sub

Looks sound. Swap Garcia and VDM as sub maybe. Garcia is an interesting one, looks ok but doesn't produce a lot.

Good point.
My question regarding MC/Bevo is trying to understand what if any strategy is behind selections. Naturally we want to field the best possible team each week but does player development and continuity ever come into it as well? I would hope so. How much of their weekly selection thinking is based on a preferred roadmap for a player over a number of coming games? (I do understand that there are various factors at play each week, so sometimes it's very necessary to drop a player straight away. )

It's clear that they rate certain players (eg Dolan, Hynes) and have given them games even though they are not having much influence (especially Dolan) so there does appear to be some long term thinking there, even when it is costing us in the short term.

But then they bring in a young player for just one week, often for a really tough game, and then he's straight out again. It has happened to both Buss and Poulter this year. There may have been others (Gardner comes to mind but I can understand that one). It seems a bit counterproductive from the player development angle.

A similar thing is starting to happen with making the same player sub two weeks in a row. That's something Bevo almost never did in the past. It's very hard to run yourself into form when you're typically only getting 20 minutes game time.

Are others on the list (apart from Dolan & Hynes) seen as just expendable commodities to be used and cast off as soon as possible? I'm sure they wouldn't spin it like that but sometimes I wonder.

Essendon wanted him a couple of years back?

Waiting for Godot renamed waiting for Garcia. Very good! 👏👏👏

Going off the SEN segment this morning, does moving Ed back to half back hurt us more or help with the butchering coming out of our D50?

We simply need two Eds, need to invest more into our club's cloning department. One Ed in the middle, one at half back. One Bont in the middle, one at half forward. Couple more Lachie McNeils are we are laughing.
