Changes vs Fremantle - Round 5

Most importantly we need to ensure a more balanced team.

A second tall to play forward and help out English, a genuine forward of any size, a tall back.

Play players predominately in their best areas of the ground.

Things are never as good as they seem nor are they as bad.

Bringing in players specifically for our weeknesses of which there are clearly 4 and dropping 4 utilities immediately provides not only a stronger team for the weekend but also one that encourages individual development of younger players.

Do that over the remainder of the year amd we will probably not finnish bottom 6 as most predicted. Keep the same confused narrative and we may come up with wooden spoon number 5

Trip away could be right time for the team. Trengove hopefully to come in. Hope they give Williams another chance. He's currently a shadow of the player he was last year so not sure if he's had a fitness issue and maybe that added to reason why he got dropped, but stick with him.
He was played as a midfielder yesterday which he is not, he’s a defender and we should play him there. Bevo needs to stop stuffing around with this chess board bullshit, he’s not Kevin Sheedy!

What's the story with Bailey Dale? He's not on the injury list but I haven't seen any mention of him in the VFL match reports either. He's a clever player with good skills and a decent eye for goal IMO, don't see why he's not getting a look in.

Only had 1 or 2 vfl games back since a foot injury interrupted his preseason

Out: English, Cordy, Naughton
In: Jong, Lipinski, Webb

Absolute Premo Bevo Squad (We need to help the inside mids)

B: Williams, Daniel, Crozier
HB: Jong, Wood, Young
C: Hunter, Libba, JJ
HF: Hayes, Webb, Lloyd
F: McLean, Lipinski, Dickson
FOL: Dunkley, Bont, Macrae
IC: Wallis, Smith, Richards, Gowers

Made me laugh - cheers.

in: Trengove, Lipinksi, Roberts.
out: Hunter, Young, Lloyd
Hunter already had a big enough head, winning the B&F appears to have made it even bigger. Send a message to the rest of the team that piss weak efforts like his will not be tolerated. Give Roberts a run at it for a few weeks to see if he can save his career. Don't even know why they kept him for if they aren't going to give him a chance. Young doesn't look ready for senior football yet.

In: Trengove, Lewis Young, Lipinski, Dureya

He has played the first two in the VFL but been quiet in both games. I think he needs to build up match fitness before being considered.

What happened in the 14 minutes to make you change your mind? Forget to log out of your second account or something?

Obviously this won’t happen but I’ll start with trying to pick a team that will match up against Freos 3 tall forwards.

Out : La.Young Richards Lloyd Hunter

In : Le.Young Trengove Schache Lynch

Wood Cordy Trengove
Crozier Young JJ
Daniel Libba McLean
Gowers Schache Lynch
Dickson Naughton Wallis

English Bont Macrae

Int Williams Hayes Dunkley Smith

I've not watched a heap of Doggies games this year, but Naughton as a junior was an outstanding defender. Not sure why he has moved forward?

Did you see the 1000’s of goals we kicked on the weekend and the high number of contested marks we took ?

No, neither did anybody else...

But he should have been moved back when it was obvious we were having a ‘mare defensively.

Nothing wrong with trying something, but you have to be able to admit it’s not working..

This idea was mentioned in passing last year and may be clutching at straws, but why couldn't we try Roberts as a deep forward? At least he has height and is a good kick. Even if he competed in the air it would at least prevent oppo backs taking uncontested marks against our otherwise vertically challenged forward line. Problem is, I think his cards were marked long ago!

Out - young
In - young

Out - Hayes
In - lynch

Out - Wallis
In - Trengove

Out - Gowers
In - suckling

FB: crozier Cordy Williams
HB: JJ Young wood
C: Richards macrae hunter
HF: lloyd naughton McLean
FF: Lynch English Dickson
R: Trengove bonti Libba
IC: suckling Dunkley smith Daniel

Two key defenders. One key forward and 2 ruckman. Revolutionary.

Goodbye Wallis.

Gotta play Williams and Lynch.

Gowers has made me look silly at times (hats off to him), but he is just a battler.

Out: Wallis, Hayes, Young, Dickson, Mclean and Cordy
In: Roberts, Suckling (if fit), Trengove, Duryea (if fit) and Lynch (in if either Suckers and Tylor aren't fit), Young

My changes - With Suckling out, JJ and Williams to take over kick-in duties from Daniel. Williams to resume his Matty Boyd style role; I thought he did OK there last year. A long kick to the middle or right wouldn't hurt once in a while. Kicking it left only succeeds if English brings it down, and then we handball into slow trouble.

Daniel moved forward - other teams are working him out. He's not quick enough to evade tackles running it out and you can see him visibly losing confidence as he's got nothing to kick to. We need his creativity in the forward half.

Our prime midfielders kept in the midfield, especially Libba. Though the Bont has not been moved inside the 50 recently. Why the hell you wouldn't use him once in a while instead of Libba or Dunkley is beyond me. He may have lost his set shots, but he'd put fear into any defenders heart.

Despite the lack of love for Wood and Cordy, our defence has actually been pretty solid for many quarters. It relies on us winning the midfield but that goes for any team. I don't see the need to bring Naughton back. Woods disposal has been awful & he's always been a confidence player. It's annoying that he finally gets his body right and now looks tired.

If Bev insists on messing around with positions and teaching players. I'd move Hunter to the right wing and make him stay there for a while.

It's an old fashioned suggestion, but do you remember the days of Eagleton and Gilbee on the wing, hugging the boundary and sprinting forward? How's about we use JJ as a genuine winger more often? I'm just thinking out of the box here. We were exciting in 2015 when we used Biggsy and Hamling bombing forward.

I'd keep Hayes but not convinced. Lipinski is tearing it up in the VFL.The Lachy Young selection was just weird.

Am I the only one looking forward to Jong returning? I'm well aware of his limitations but he provides a point of difference. He's got a head like a wild cat.

Jong gives you 100% effort and is a great off ball runner

Actually this move is worth considering as at least if Daniel only gets 10 disposals in the forward line, these COULD be 5 goals as he has better skills than most on the list and would be there as a crumber not expected to compete in the air

Not many people saying Wood as an out.

Why not? Love the bloke but boy oh boy, talk about a downhill skier since 2016

Wood has been played out of position and often been injured since 2016. He has lost confidence.

Put Wood back into the role of interceptor. If that means picking one of Lewis Young, Roberts or even moving Naughton back then so be it.

Interceptor is not a position. Unfortunately he seems too slow, especially in the first 10-20m. The game has passed him by. Vintage Wood should be on PornHub but unfortunately we'll never see that from him again. This must be his last season as captain.

It was in 15...all Imsaying is release him to play on the third or fourth fwd and let him third man up occasionally.

He has declined no doubt. A few of us wanted to discuss his trade value last yr but too many here were too horrified to have a rational discussion. That ship has sailed as he has little value now.

Agree on the captaincy.

From an overall list perspective his decline is not the end of the world. One thing we arent short of is back flankers

Should be getting it back at VFL level.

Some of the decisions lately, hard to tell if it's coaching or player positions, perhaps both

Out: Wood - What a tragedy. Best thing about Wood in his prime was his attack on the ball not just in the air but his desperation at ground contests. All of that has completely disappeared. Absolutely pathetic from a captain. Goes to ground all the time and chases tail. This ethic shouldn’t change depending on the height of the player you’re on. Please ‘give him a rest’ for the trip to Perth bevo.

In: Lewis Young - Didn’t do a tonne wrong in his few games this year. Can play on the second tall and seems a trustworthy enough user. Sad to say this given how middling his form is but he should be an upgrade on Wood.

Out: Lachie Young - Good to have a taste for it and wasn’t our worst this weekend but his out is more so we can put...

In: Duryea - Really hoping he only needed the one week off. Think he’s a real steady head in defense and unlike many others, I really trust his disposal.

Out: Dunkley - So ******* sick of seeing one dimensional inside mids being played out of position. Bevo just needs to accept that if Dunkley’s not in the guts he’s worthless. Sure if you want him to build his game in other roles get him to do it the vfl when it’s not going to cost us games. Really this guy should only be playing in the firsts if bont, Libba or Macrae go down.

In: Trengove - Overdue. Can help English, provide a focal point forward, moves about as fast as Dunkley as well so no really loss of pace there.

Out: Wallis - See Dunkley

In: Lipinski - Deserves a crack! Can play wing and half forward well and has been adding an inside game this season in the vfl. His disposal is an immediate upgrade to Wallis and Dunkley meaning he’s not a liability when using the ball in space. Should have happened last week.

Out: Hayes - Probably the stiffest of the lot. Played a good game but is just too much of a plodder. We need pacier players with a more dangerous edge to their game.

In: Lynch - Has been playing half forward in the VFL and has been pretty solid. Gives us some pace and X factor that we desperately need.

Other positional changes:

1. McLean to give our mids a chop out

It’s ridiculous to think that Bevos go to players to help relieve our tired big three in bont, Libba and Macrae are Billy Gowers and Bailey Williams when they have a proven Mid in McLean sitting in the forward pocket all game. I like McLean forward but if those players need a spell he as well as Smith should be the go to subs. I’d add Lipinski as a third as well seeing he’s shown that this year.

So the inside midfield is split:

The Big 3: Bont, Libba, Macrae
The Other 3: McLean, Smith, Lipinski

That actually looks so classy IMO

2. Williams in the backline. Rate him as a mid long term but play him where you started him this year and where he was playing in the vfl.

3. Gowers as the third tall. With Naughton and our 2 rucks in, Gowers should have an easier game forward. Keep him out of the midfield.

Final Team:

Crozier Cordy Williams
Duryea Young Daniel
Hunter Macrae JJ
Lloyd Naughton McLean
Dickson Trengrove Gowers
English Bont Libba

Int: Lipinski Smith Lynch Richards

Just my opinion but this strikes a far better balance of key position height, class and speed.
