Changes vs Fremantle - Round 5

Hey Dogs fans, I come in peace, watched the game out of my Carlton trade interest on the weekend. Was keeping an eye on Will Hayes as well as I saw dominate the VFL last year. That kid has definitely got something. Was running hard and too the right spot consistently. Made his errors but you can forgive that for a debutant that’s busting his guts IMO (there seemed to be a lot of senior players who weren’t putting in the effort Hayes was).

If I were you I’d be dropping 3-4 players from that game, but Hayes, not one of them, he will only get better and cleaner with confidence and game time.

Good luck for next week against Freo

I thought he looked pretty good as well. Not the best disposer of the ball but there are far worse in our team. I don't think Beveridge has a history of dropping players after just one chance, though I do hope he drops Young, another debutant from last week.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see him clean that up with gametime and a bit of experience though. He was one of the better users in the VFL from all I’ve read last year before the draft. Probably nervous as hell which would have impacted him a bit too.

Still you can’t teach effort and desire, and he seemingly has that in spades.

I think we are being unfair about Easton. He is an intercept mark player being asked to play as a second tall and give away height and weight recent examples he played on Buddy and Casboult. If he got a medium sized player to match up on his form would improve greatly. Although Naughton is our best option to take a mark up forward he has a few quite weeks so surely he goes back and this frees up Easton.

I do not think Trengove is the answer up forward but why not give ago changing with English in the ruck. While this is happening Schache needs to be tried in defence in the 2s for a few weeks if this works he can go back as a defender and Naughton can go forward.

I know this is not ideal but I see as our best option until Boyd comes good in the 2s. It cannot be any worst that what we served up last week.

Betts went off on the weekend, much deserved, much respect. :thumbsu:

T
Interceptor is not a position. Unfortunately he seems too slow, especially in the first 10-20m. The game has passed him by. Vintage Wood should be on PornHub but unfortunately we'll never see that from him again. This must be his last season as captain.
The way he is going it will be his last season full stop. He isn't offering a lot at the minute

If Lin Jong is the answer, you’re asking the wrong question.

Any ideas as to why Schache just stopped trying after the hawthorn game??

Wouldn’t mind seeing him next to Naughton and English/boyd. Can’t hurt at this stage
Would like to see Schache and Lewy Young come in to give some structure to the side.
And not just give up aerial advantage to the opposition

If it is important to give English games then the same should go for Schache, whether he kicks goals or not we need him there to help Naughton. We need Trengove to help English and we need to play Lewis Young and swap McLean and Wallis and …………..so on. Its all so simple.

Are we willing to make a statement at the selection table? Hayes turns the ball over a lot but was far from our worst. Lachie Young gets another crack.

Here's one though - a player who genuinely isn't 'versatile', only plays one spot and is horribly out of form with a number of players who can play in his position. His first name is Easton.

Not quite sure who you Wood be referring to...

Wood Roberts Cordy
JJ Trengove Crozier
Smith Dunkley Macrae
Mclean Naughton Hunter
Dickson Schache Lloyd
English Bont Macrae

Daniel Gowers Williams Lipinski

In: Trengove, Roberts, Lipinski, Schache
Out: Hayes, Young, Richards, Wallis

Need to be going tall in defence coming up against Freo's forward line. Roberts seems unlikely to actually happen but would happily take Lewis Young in his place. Naughton needs to be rotating back and forward as necessary as well (like when Trengove rucks). I know it's not ideal to be moving around a developing player but he seems to have a mature head and being in our top handful of players he has to be able to do what the team requires.

Wallis maybe a bit stiff to be dropped before Hunter and Dunkley but I think with Dunkley played in the right role he's the far superior player, and I want to see if Hunter can make some progress as a forward because it's becoming clear to me that he doesn't offer enough as an outside mid. Could also look at keeping Wallis in as a forward and dropping Gowers.

Our number one priority has to be developing functioning forward and backline structures because it's obvious our current ones aren't working. This might mean playing some players who aren't 100% up to it, but the development it will result in for the rest of the team will be huge.

Hunter can't play fwd, his awful I50s are exceeded by his horrendous set shots which in turn is only surpassed in shitness by his snaps. He needs to continue as a hard running defensive winger IMO.

Caleb should be fwd. Webb could take kick ins in the absence of Suckling but appears to have been groomed as an inside mid, * knows why. Roberts has a line through him.

Agree on the Trengove, Naughton English rotation but not sure its worth it as it stuffs Naughton around and possibly hurts his development.

In height, speed and ball use, out butchers and slow pokes.

Wood Young Webb
JJ Cordy Crozier
Maclean Macrae Hunter
Caleb Naughton Lynch
Lloyd JT Gowers
R English, Bont, Libba
I Wallis, Richards, Lipinski, Smith

Out: Dunkley, La Young, Hayes, Williams, Dickson
In: Webb, Lipinski, Lynch, JT, Le Young

Schache to get a game when he starts trying. Wood close to done. Toss a coin on Wallis/Dunkley and Dickson/Lloyd but only one of each should play. IMO Wallis and Lloyd are more flexible so in.

Bev far more likely to go in unchanged.

Wood, Roberts, Crozier
Williams, Cordy, JJ

Richards, Daniel, Smith, Hayes

Wallis, Dunkley, La Young, out
Lynch, Roberts, Trengrove in

I’ll put this out there. I think our backline is much more structured when we have Roberts there. I’ve never understood the hate he got. Never had a huge number of goals kicked on him, was always accountable and helped backline structure. Very underrated in my opinion. Time to give him another crack or delist him end of season...would allow cordy to play second tall and play Naughton wherever the hell we want him to as a swing man. Other ins are lipa and lynch and possibly Webb. Wallis to either play forward or he’s an out, as is young and Wood. If Naughton is down back then woods spot as an interceptor is redundant. With more tall timber down back then Daniels likely to be less exposed down there.

Bring in Schace for forward structure.... put McLean in guts as well as Dunkley (otherwise Dunkley is an out). Big call but I’d drop Hunter. I get his strengths but his weaknesses are killing us more than his strengths are helping at this stage. Needs to practice tackling, kicking and generally sharpening up his disposal...

Caleb should be fwd.

As damaging as I think he has the potential to be in the forward line, I can't see him getting enough of the ball to make it worthwhile. Would be happy to see it tried though, can't be any worse than seeing him match up on Taberner, Hogan and McCarthy.

Wasn't he a forward for almost all of last year? I hope we don't go back to that, played terribly
