Changes vs GC17

Definitely agree with the outs (and 3 of those would need massive improvement to be picked again).
Can't see that many changes, but if so:
Lycett - Marshall
Fantasia - Bonner
McEntee - Farrell
Garner - DBJ
Mayes /Lienert (sub) - Woodcock.
Wouldn't be against Taj coming in if Fantasia doesn't come up.
We would have enthusiasm & more urgency for ball / body with this lot.
I just want guys in the side who will play with some intensity (and some skill obviously). Playing with intensity needs to be a minimum standard. Hard to ask them to play like that though when their coach just sits there nonchalantly in the box regardless of what's unfolding before his eyes.

Will be watching McEntee and my boy Garner closely today.

Hey - now Lycett has served his 4 games can he play for the maggies today?
Serious question!
Garner playing well as of QT. McEntee unsighted so far. Much more tentative and less desperate so far than his highlights would suggest. Haven’t seen that tenacity yet.

I'm not expecting much of McEntee today. He's jumped from one team to another, barely knows his new teammates and has to adapt to a new style of play. He's going to be a fish out of water for a couple of weeks.

Schofield is impressing me so far. Playing in the square, getting quick hands out of contested play and providing a wider outside option as well.

His head would be spinning with all the rubbish game plans Ken has filled it with.

As with Bonner the other week, this time I was looking at Byrne-Jones.

I found it a little curious that at centre bounces he was the one who was going into the middle, because he's never shown the ability to do that. Then I remember that Houston is carrying that shoulder and it made me realise just how ****ed our team actually is at the moment. Ordinarily it would be Houston that is pushing up to be the +1 at centre bounces and providing the link up from defence, but now it's been left to the likes of Byrne-Jones, who winds up being gassed as **** because he was never meant to play that role.

Would explain why he was just trundling around the ground and not really presenting options when we were attacking.

I'd cut the guy some slack.

Lycett, Ladhams and Hayes in the same team would end up being a bit unbalanced.
Smalls like Farrell and Woodcock were invisible for large periods. So I'd like for an extra contested marker around the ground. Ladhams can go all over the ground and help down back and mark up on the spares in the back 50 we let loose.

Agree that they were invisible but working forward we need to have the correct structure and I just think 3 rucks against a speedy team like GC would spell trouble.

Cut some slack? The guy has been horrendous all year, not just Thursday night. He HAS to be dropped.

I wouldn't drop Farrell, this is the exact type of game he'll dominate.

I'm thinking just Lycett for Marshall at this stage. The rest would be shuffling depth deckchairs until the better players are back from injury.

Let someone else try and dominate it then. Farrells had his chance.

Lienert just must play.
Garner in as well.
Lycett returns,
Out: Bonner, Farrell, Marshall (inj)
Sub; Schofield for Woodcock
So let me get this right.
You want you want to bring in a 7 possession defender who was injured yesterday for a winger/forward in Farrell.
Leinert for Bonner I understand as I do with Lycett for Marshall.
I get the Garner love but I think his biggest problem is just who he replaces.
He has to play back but his lack of speed limits his position. He cannot play the small defender role on say a Rankine so this then means he is looking at Jones or Burton’s spot and they are not going anywhere.

Lycett for Marshall without question, more players need to be made example of after a complete no show performance.

Unfortunately after a lack lustre performance in the SANFL. Lienert would have to be a chance after what was probably a BOG performance.

Schofield was really classy, good clearances and good in traffic after a few games in the best now might be worth a try.

Lycett and Leinert (and Farrel Inj?)

Marshall and DBJ (Schofield)

Garner copping an injurie probably keeps him out and saves Bonner who’d otherwise be on his way out.

Could swap Woodcock out as sub for Fredrick.

Fantasia comes in if fit earlier than expected, but probably worth being cautious.

Yep - intensity, reliability and robustness is what I want. In particular, I don't want us to re-select players who fumble too much under pressure, fail to stick tackles, surrender the footy easily when confronted with physical pressure, go to ground, or refuse to close down opponents (e.g. on short leads).

Bonner, Farrell and Woodcock are the three classic culprits of these problems and I want to see them all dropped in the coming weeks, starting with Bonner for Lienert this week, and Woodcock for Garner or Schofield.
Jones, although young, is fumbling far too much - clearly, he's going to be a star and I don't want him dropped, but he has to clean up his ball handling. Bergman needs to start using his big frame more effectively to stand up in tackles without giving up the footy so easily, and to not get pushed off the ball in marking contests. To see him outmarked and outbodied by Weightman a month ago and Close against Geelong was disappointing.

Unfortunately we have too few replacements to bring in just yet, and most were not great against the WWT Eagles yesterday.

Changes:
1. Garner for Woodcock (Bergman or Jones to move forward for game against GC).
2. Lienert for Bonner (to play wing instead - Farrell to be medical sub).
3. Lycett for Marshall

I don’t see the need for any unforced changes tbh. We just don’t really have anyone worth bringing in IMO. I thought Bonner was fine and although Farrell went missing (outside of that amazing goal) I think we’ve all seen what he is capable of, so IMO its worth persisting.
