I can't see why we wouldn't play LJ it defies the purpose of having a list really.

If Grigg isn't picked, well I guess SANFL is clearly not relevant and having a SANFL reserves team appears fairly pointless.

And who gives Sauce a chop out??? He's already showing signs of fatigue after a restricted pre-season and indifferent form all season!!!
Jenkins (the forward) has been one of the success stories of the year. We won't drop him. He's played 20 odd games, is taking the No 1 key defender, our midfield is sucking arse, and he's still doing ok. Set shot goal kicking aside.

Jenkins (the ruckman) is the worry. In an ideal world he'll fill that 2nd forward/2nd ruck role for us. Tex as No 1 forward, Jacobs as No 1 ruckman. Perfect mix.

What's happened though is that his ruckwork has been so poor that we've had to replace Tippett and Walker with three players - Jenkins, McKernan and Lynch. So that's squeezed a running player out of the line up and has affected our balance.

Realistically, we'd be playing less youth than we are now.
Nah.. players careers would be over at the age of 23, unless they were "elite" (eg Thompson, Dangerfield). Grigg would have been in the team ages ago (not necessarily a bad thing in my eyes), along with duds like Martin, Riley & Jaensch. Actually, the team would very closely resemble Melbourne, with no senior players and no leadership on the field.

Speak for yourself you've written of a few players before the age of 23, Riley, Jaensch, Mckernan, Petrenko and Johnston

OK.. 25. We would have said good-bye to Reilly, VB, Mackay, Douglas, Porplyzia and Jacobs. We don't have any replacements for Jacobs, so I'm not sure who the BF collective would have doing the rucking. Thompson, Rutten & Dangerfield would be our only 100+ game players.

As for my record of writing off players.. I'm still waiting for the evidence that I've been wrong with writing off any of the players named!

Ok so we would have missed out on one good year from Reilly, 2 including this year from douggie, not sure why you've included porps or Jacobs, people just wanted them dropped not banished and called duds, delist yesterday like you do frequently. Vb, well I'm quite happy if he doesn't play for the AFC again in the near future.

OUT: Jaensch, Wright, Danger (inj)
IN: Grigg, Johnston, Petrenko

Shaw needs to prove his fitness, having not played SANFL for the last 2 weeks.
Kerridge also has injury problems (?)
Johnston has 1 week to impress, before Smack comes back and forces him back to the SANFL. Good luck - it could well be the difference between a new contract or being delisted at the end of the year.

Or he comes in and when SMcK is back we finally, deservedly drop Jacobs.

Or we drop Otten and try LJ in defense.

Or we give Jenkins a spell in the SANFL.

Actually, the team would very closely resemble Melbourne, with no senior players and no leadership on the field

So the status quo would be maintained.

Out: Dangerfield (inj), Thompson (rehab centre), Jaensch (oblivion),
van Berlo (captain's graveyard), Otten (sprint training)

In: Luke Thompson & Shaw as running backs with Smith to midfield
Martin, Tambling to start for a change with Wright to small forward
Grigg sub

You're not seriously suggesting that we should play Smack as a lead ruck? Now I know you're trolling.

The other two scenarios are plausible. Otten vs LJ is exceedingly unlikely. JJ vs LJ is possible, but highly doubtful given that LJ has never been preferred to.. well, anybody really.

The season is shot and merely following the status quo is a waste of time. It's time to change things up a little to see what other players (or the same players in different positions) can give us. We have problems in all three areas of the ground.

Firstly, we need to do something about the midfield. We're getting cut to shreds by the opposition midfielders who run much, much harder than ours. We will probably be without Danger for the next 3-4 weeks, while Thompson looks ready for the retirement home. Wright has been shown up time and time again by the stronger midfields. Yeah we know he can dominate against GWS and GC. Big deal, so can Jasper ****ing Pittard. I would bring in Grigg and move Smith to the midfield, while Wright should be left as the sub for the next few games.

Secondly our backline needs another mid-sized defender. Having Mackay (181 cm), Brown (181) and Laird (176) makes us too small. In the second quarter on Friday night, Smith was up against Reid (195cm) and Laird was on Young (192) which resulted in a few easy goals to Collingwood. I would move Smith to the midfield and bring in LT or Hartigan (Shaw's SANFL form is rubbish so shouldn't be in contention). West Coast did well with a backline of Glass, Mackenzie, Brown and Schofield against us so I don't think we would be too tall.

Funny how much better our forward line looked when we had someone with crumbing ability in there in Lyons.

As for the ruck, there's probably not much we can do this year. Perhaps we should add Redden from Port to our wishlist of Gorringe/Lycett. Jacobs/Jenkins is the softest big man combo since Moran/Griffin played for us a few years ago.

Cupboard is looking bare - forget Kerridge (inj), Petrenko (concussed) & Shaw (needs to play a couple of games in the SANFL otherwise likely to get injured at AFL level).

Outs: Dangerfield (inj), Thompson (inj), Jaensch (for reasons posted).
Ins: Johnston (or Hartigan if not match fit enough), Grigg, Martin (last man standing - forget Tambling)

The only reason why west coast do well with those 4 in the team is that 3 out of 4 in Glass, Emac and Schofield actually have quite a lot of pace for big men and decent agility. Talia is okay, but Rutten and Otten are baaaaad. As much as Smith is a gun, if we move a 189cm player with good defending skills, pace and a good kick out of our backline i cant even begin to imagine how we would even get the ball out of our 50. What would be the most beneficial to our backline is having a faster Otten. Otten has decent disposal and can defend, its just his overall athletic ability that kills us. Then on the other hand we now have Hendo who is also s great user and great athletic ability but cant defend. Its a real mix up right now and we need to find some balance fast.

Smith is being asked to do everything really and i think its hurting him. Laird and Brown are fine, they will be great small defenders for us for a very long time. I dont know why some people are calling for Laird to be moved to the midfield also???? why does everyone insist on taking any player that looks he has the slightest ability and chuck him in the midfield. there are other positions on the ground also that we need to sure up. Smith and Laird need to stay back in defense unfortunately. Mackay needs to be moved onto a wing and get the hell out of our defensive 50.

For me our defense could look something like:

Laird Rutten Henderson
Smith Talia Brown

I think Smith is definitely good enough to be our 3rd tall. We saw last year what he did to Goodes and Mayne in the finals when he was moved onto them. Smith, Henderson, Brown, Laird are all good users of the ball and have a bit of speed. The one thing though if we were to play that backline is that Ricky henderson seriously needs to learn how to defend.

I have a couple of Questions
(1) Why would you bring Johnstone in when he has only played for 5 minutes when Grigg has been
outstanding in the SANFL and can't get a gig when Thompson is playing under duress
(2) People are calling for Shaw he wouldn't ready yet, plus is Inj prone Hartigan B 4 him

It looks like 2 class M/Fielders will be missing next week Dangerfield (inj) Thompson (a rest I hope)
that will leave a big hole. so why not try LAIRD in the middle

Seems to be tearing it up for the Double Blues right now.

I've not seen any games, does Angus Graham normally play forward for Sturt?
Yep, since Angus Kurtze has come back Graham has been the No 2 ruck with long stints up forward.

At the moment Fatty Duldig is out as well so Graham is basically a pseudo full forward.

Because we were already playing Dangerfield as a pseudo tall marking forward in the absence of McKernan, and now with him out as well the balance will be even worse. Otten went forward and had 4 disposals for the game. Switch him back and put Henderson forward and we lose drive from defence in exchange for a forward who can't really take a contested mark.

I don't hate the idea of using L Johnston in defence. If we are needing a player with a bit of size and athleticism (better than Otten anyway) then I think it could be a good option. Some are concerned about his effort and intensity. this is where I think playing him in defence would benefit him. Up forward you can get lazy and stop presenting. In defence you don't really have the choice. you work your ass off or get exposed.

Of course it's his form as a forward that has people wanting him in, so how about shifting Lynch back where he apparently excelled for the Bays, and using LJ as the lead up forward? These 2 could chop and change for all I care depending on what's working on the day.
