Just watched the first quarter and everyone was running away from VB. No good tagging someone and watching them run away from you and you don't make any ground up. Why the F didn't we play like that for the rest of the game? Ran from the back, kicked diagonally instead of up the line, closed down space, almost saw a few of them tackling the arms instead of the waist. Need to do it for longer than the first quarter.

Shaw did not play well last week for Glenelg but was good first up. He is a key part of our future (providing he can play three straight games without getting injured). He is not a Jaensch or a Martin (could be handy depth players), he has the tools to be an above average AFL footballer.

The inside midfielders would be Sloane, Douglas, Crouch and Grigg.

Outside midfielders Smith, Kerridge, Vince (way outside) and Henderson.

van Berlo to be part of the back 6 rotation.

I look at that team and think we're going to get smashed. Not disagreeing with your selections - and I think we'd get smashed whether Thompson plays or not.

It's a very young team, with just 1x 200 game player, 4x 100+ game players - and 12 players with less than 50 games experience.

I would love to see these changes, with Wright being the only person I wouldnt care if he stayed / went. He is brilliant on his day.

By my calculations that team has an average age of 23yrs 10mths.
It has a total of 1323 games between them, at an average of 60.1 per player.

Our team last week had an average age of 24yrs 3mths, with an average of 67.6 games per player.

His success as a junior was largely playing as an inside midfielder, he then arrived at AFL level and was assumed to be an outside runner or a small forward, of which he was neither. Its too late now, I think the ship has sailed, but if he were to succeed it would be as an inside midfielder IMO. If we lose both Danger and Thommo this week, probably wouldn't be the worst idea to bring him in, give us another seasoned body.

I believe the AFL Coaches Award is the best measure of the influence of players (as compared to media awards or the Brownlow). Our five best performers this season according to the AFLCA are Dangerfield 57, Sloane 35, Douglas 19, Lynch 16 and Kerridge 15. Bernie has 2 votes which were scored against GWS ( and Porps has none).

If at this stage in his career Bernie is unable to have a consistently positive influence on the performance of the team, should we be playing him or one of our younger midfielders (Lyons, Grigg, Riley when he was fit)?

Hard to argue with that voting - but I'd have him in the 5 to 10 range. Significant when you're playing 22 guys.

No issue with rotating time through the middle for the guys you list. Grigg probably can be off a flank rather than through the middle. My particular point was that you had Bernie as being 'way outside'. I see plenty of options for youngsters to play whilst keeping Bernie in the mix for centre bounces and stoppages. Is your concern how he plays or that you want younger guys to get more minutes around the ball?

Also Bernie is 7th at the club on the AFL player rankings - and rising. Likely to pass Reilly and Tex soon. And possibly even Thommo. He'll likely be top 4/5 behind Danger/Sloane/Douglas (maybe Thommo) by the end of the year.

Yes its a made up statistical version of events - but given its based on where you get the ball, under what pressure and how you put it to team advantage for a score, I actually don't mind it as a system. Pure defenders are a bit hard done by - but given the players mentioned that's not a factor here.
(for those who don't understand how its pulled together - go and read now. Key thing to probably note is it calcultes the ratings based on the players most recent 40 games in a 2 year window. Games 1-30 are at full effect. Games 31-40 taper off by 10%. This allows for missing a few games with no impact to the rating. So the strong 2012's of Reilly/Tex/Thommo keeping them high until more of those games drop out of the calculation.)

I still have hope we haven't seen the last of Bernie's best yet. Even 80% of his best is going to be important to our side for a few years.
