Massive challenge for Delaney brothers and Jacobs. Friday night footy everyone will be watching. Looking forward to it.

He was very underwhelming, yes, but played as substitute for a reason imo. His fitness wasn't up to scratch and he came off a pre-season where he put on significant size which takes the body some getting used to.

His apprenticeship in the 2's has been long and as a pure inside midfielder, he's adapted to the role well. I'll be happy if he replicates his tackling at VFL level and can run out a full game. I won't be too concerned if he doesn't get it a shitload on the outside and hurts with his disposal.

He needs to work and get his hands dirty.

Underwhelming is a good way of putting it - absolutely shithouse is another but that is not PC.

Your reasons for the display seem sound, and no doubt you have far more insight than I do going by your other posts HH3.

So if that is the case then I look forward to seeing such a change in approach, and even if he makes mistakes but, as you say, if he gets his hands dirty and replicates the VFL tackling and so on you speak of then I will be very willing to give credit for that :thumbsu:

Good to see Lukey D. get a chance after his amazing form in the 2s.

Also happy with Jacobs inclusion hoping he really grabs his chance.

BMaC for the sub like the way he came on and really had an impact last week albeit vs the Dees.

Grima must be being rested.

What's the most goals he's conceded in a match this year? 3 once or twice?

Scott must think our number 2 backline can handle their depleted forward line. I hope delahney can keep whichever player he is on to under 3 goals. Pref less.

His last 5 weeks as an example have netted him 35 tackles.

7 a game are very good numbers. 9,5,7,8,6.

We need that defensive output at a minimum in Swallow's absence. That should be his key performance indicator. Tackling and pure ball winning.

I should friggen hope so. If he is playing on anyone besides Tomahawk i definitely think he will

Yep, very solid numbers I agree. Of course it is a level (or two or three) above, but then in saying that if his attitude is for the contest no reason why he can't try to replicate it.

I completely agree we need that defensive output, which is why I preferred Greenwood assuming he deserved it. If you are right then he has his chance and i'll have to review my thoughts on BJ (which admittedly can only get better)

Greenwood might be the most overrated 'defensive' midfielder in the history of football.

Is tackling not defensive play? Last time I checked in his games in the AFL this year he is top 10 in the league for average tackles.

Really want to see how our younger players go without spitta in the team.
Will be good to see how ziebs , cunners , basti etc really need to really stand up and lead us well.

Correct 8th. Also given he was a half back flanker in juniors I think his defensive capabilities are bang on. He's done a number of good defensive jobs in his career. Except a quarter against Rich (not helped by teammates) and Ablett jnr (untaggable)

Isn't Jacobs averaging seven over his last five in the VFL?

I'm just saying Greenwood seems to have this reputation as a defensive midfielder - is it because he shut down Dal Santo in 2009? He is tough and physical but he's definitely not someone you would trust with a defensive role.

happy with the key defensive match ups
thompson-hawkins
car keys- vardy
cam delaney-blicavs/west
hansen loose man in defence

hine should tag stevie j
and macmillan sub

How will he be a loose man in defence? Geelong won't dish up the crap GWS & Melbourne have dished up. Hansen can easily take the forward Car Keys will play on. We look like we have one tall too many. They have two big forwards, Hawkins & Vardy, the other four are small, we have four tall defenders even if they drop their interchange, Blicavs, into the forward line we still have the talls covered.

This has be the end for Levi, either by our design or his just wanting a chance elsewhere. Even with Jacobs coming in he would seem a better fit than Delaney.

AFL>>>>VFL. Anthony and Seira look OK back there too remember. But as previous with comment to HH3, credit where it is due if he has been tackling hard.

Greenwoods defensive abilities as a TAGGER are overstated I agree. But as a tough midfielder that runs both ways I don't think they are - we have enough front runners, I think we need more players who will do the dirty stuff and I think Levi might be one of them (could be wrong, but I like his attitude)

Keys will play on Hawkins I reckon with Thompson and Hansen dropping off to give support.

Could be right there H. Last time Thompson got caught out a couple of times and gave away holding the man free kicks. Keys would be more suited to the body on body stuff (not that Thompson isn't but Tomahawk is a big shit).

A lot of us were unhappy Spitta got a serious injury while trying to carry an injury through games.

I'm quite happy to see Grima rested before niggle becomes a major injury.

He has hardly been able to bend over for weeks, even though he has been spoiling solidly as per usual.

Long overdue spell I suspect, and with LDelaney in good form I think the selectors have made a very good call.

Jacobs has put a mountain of effort into addressing the defensive side of his game, and has improved greatly over the year. Very happy he and keys have been rewarded!

I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully L.Delaney proves me wrong, hopefully the Captain stands tall and I hope Ben Jacobs shows enough to have us think he is part of the best 22 next year.

Hmm, Atley named on the wing. Hope that works out.

Car keys in is the right move against this forward line - and reward for form. Our first Swallow-less team in a long time - hope we can make it work.

Greenwood very stiff, thought he was a lot better in the clinches compared to Jacobs
On the weekend. Will be interesting to see Jacobs nonetheless but it would have been nice to see Greenwood play as a clearance player rather than a tagger. Will be interesting to see who Jacobs plays on, if they have over twenty touches wonder if he will get the same treatment as Levi.

Thought we would have went with an extra runner against a side known for
It's hard running. Particularly confusing considering they dropped pods.
