not going to lie, i am really concerned with k cornes, against weak opposition he can run free and collect thousands of possessions, thats fine. but in tight tough close games, finals like against quality opposition i feel the game might be going past him abit. i know its not a popular thought, but one ive noticed in recent times. really struggled v north and the eagles, they were both tight tough contests.

Both games we weren't allowed to play our free flowing running game which essentially neutered Kane's elite advantage. He's still an important cog in the midfield, especially when we play our preferred style of football.

I have noticed this as well, how much value does someone with his experience offer a young group though, I would expect a lot.

good sides wont allow us to run free and play pretty football, finals aren't won that way either, im not saying drop him, but i am a bit worried.

What type of players Newton? As a WA based fan don't get the access to the SANFL other then highlights and stats. He would be hard pressed to get into our midfield atm,is he capable of going forward or is he purely a midfielder only? His stats the last 2 weeks have been superb but without seeing him play I can't judge properly.

He's a less talented Hartlett/Boak combination. I would say he would move like Hartlett and plays more a Boak style. He's a hard worker and has got really fit in the last 9 months where the penny has seemed to dropped. He'll start his first few games as genuine mid probably without too much centre square stuff and some HFF.

Starting to get pumped for this guys debut, I think he might really translate to AFL style play. The fact he can get the ball inside and use it going forward could put him ahead of half our players ie Young, Moore, Hitchy etc who have shown they can only do 1 of those consistently.

It's just time to see what he's got. The fact we're playing Geelong this week is all the better, bring him in when it matters.

Only problem is finding a spot for him but I think he's outperformed a few.

Noticed Kane Mitchell had a lot of it for the Maggies today. Worth considering for the sub? We know he's good there and may offer a little more than Impey at this point in time.

He's still a rookie lister isn't he?

I read in another thread that we had one rookie spot open ATM. I have no idea what his form's been like from up here other than his stats and I also don't know if any other rookies might be considered before him. I do think he may yet be a better option than Impey though as we know what we're getting with Kane whereas Jarman's still inexperienced and has yet to play four quarters. If Mitchell was upgraded we'd lose nothing in the speed stakes and he's done well as sub in the past. Anyway I'm just putting it out there for those who've been watching the Maggies.

Edit: A quick check says with Redden out that last rookie spot may be held for Renouf if he hasn't been upgraded. I'd say Mitchell next in line after that, first in line if Redden was fit.

In: Hombsch
Out: Young

Sub: Gray

If Motlop doesn't come up (50/50 yeah?) then Impey is dropped for one of

Moore, Butcher, Newton, Stewart (in order of preference)

If Monfries comes in then Gray is dropped and someone goes to the sub (one of Pittard or Impey (if he doesn't play pick one of the above, bar Butcher)

Unsure how i feel on Monfries being the sub, depends how he feels really

Don't forget the assignments Kane gets. Usually the best or second best midfielder. Last time against Geelong Motlop was in and Kane was asked to run with him. Now we have Matty White and Impey to cover any speedy players. Kane has done his job but I can't say that he has put in too many bad efforts. Definitely a bonus to have in the side. His finals match was one of his best games.

A goalless three possession game for Butcher today. Sadly, no way I'd consider him. I liked what Gray did in his debut and he worked hard for little reward Saturday night but I'd rather have him in the SANFL next weekend and have a pacier player who is more adept with our structures as sub against Geelong.

Monfries won't play. I'd give him two more weeks. Too risky this weekend, not required the next. Rather give him all the time he needs, then another week just to be sure. Newton, Moore, Stewart would be my order of preference on the other 3 but only based on what posters who've been to Maggies games have said and watching Geelong today, with the tall timber they have I have to agree with posters calling for Hombsch to come in.

Right now for mine, Gray out, Hombsch in, maybe Newton for Young. Impey sub unless Motlop plays. Possible further changes pending as the week progresses.

Mmm i'm a big beleiver in what Butcher does for our structure camp/we need to get games into him whilst he is contracted

I also very highly doubt that Monfries will play, just covering all bases

I don't understand your Gray arguement, you would think that they all know the structures by know and who is faster who isn't playing? Mitchell? Neade?

I just thought Gray was shown up for his lack of experience working within the Power's structures Saturday night, often finding himself out of position to create an option. He certainly worked hard but just seemed a little lost.

I did mention Mitchell earlier but if Renouf hasn't been upgraded already that is moot as if we upgraded Kane and Lobbe was injured we'd have no recognised ruckman.

So all that considered at this point in time I'd have Impey as sub for speed late in the game unless Motlop comes up in which case I'll have to reconsider but that's a case of crossing that bridge when we come to it.

As for Butcher, I'm in the 'desperately want him to succeed' camp but between his zero impact performance today and my concern that he could quite possibly add nothing to our side next weekend and take the spot of a player who'll have more impact I could not possibly have him in next week. After last weels five goals I was hoping to see three goals next to his name this week. Unfortunately I saw three possessions. If he brought that next weekend we might as well play a witches hat in his possie. No three possession player ever deserves a promotion. Ever.

As to his contract, I honestly think he'd receive little if any interest at the moment from other clubs and again, I hate to say it but if he doesn't start to show something soon we may not have a lot of interest ourselves. Such a waste and believe me, it pains me to say that.

Thought it was more than Gray not knowing Pattersons than anything else

I think Butcher is one game of 4+ goals at AFL level to beat his mental demons/ his main problem is where he is running, its going to be easier when he is playing AFL football (not to mention i think we can expose their KPDs with Longergan/Rivers going to Butcher/Schulz if he plays allowing Westhoff to run free)

But yeah, three possies is bad. THought it was more than that, what type of KPF did he play?

Other clubs would be interested, lets not kid ourselves otherwise

I heard that mentioned re Gray and Patersons but I don't really buy that. I mean if you were playing on a ground that was 250 metres long you should still know how far your team mates going to kick the ball. I think it was easy for him when we were smashing Brissy 'cos they gave us space everywhere but with the finals like pace of the WC game he struggled and I just see a big possibility of him being over awed against an even better side in Geelong. He just ran to the wrong places. I do see a bit in him though and hope to see more later.

You're right about Butch. Some clubs would take a gamble. We wouldn't get anything like what he cost us though and boy, if he went to the draft would you want to spend anything more than a late second round on current form? Not me.

Don't get me wrong though Jonts, I'd much rather he started clunking a few for us. If he was doing half what Hawkins did today I'd be stoked.

He turns 23 in July and there's a long way to go this season as it is. Is also contracted to the end of 2015 after signing an extension at the start of 2013.

If he gets to the end of this year unfettered by injury and is still playing like Fergus Gumbleton we'll have to keep an open mind, but what he'd command would still be worth less than the potential rewards of us persisting with him.
