I doubt it'll happen and I doubt I'll get much support on this board, but I wouldn't be opposed to leaving Sammy Gray in the side ahead of O'Shea. Three reasons:

a) Like for like. Trengove, Carlile, Hombsch and Jonas is more than enough to handle Geelong's tall forwards, who are all either inconsistent (Hawkins) or decidedly average (the rest).
b) O'Shea hasn't played what you'd call a 'good game' all year. Not in the pre-season, not in the SANFL, and not in the AFL. Gray hasn't played what you'd call a 'bad game' all year. He was average but not terrible against the Eagles, and he's been a standout in every other game he's played at SANFL or AFL level. I like an emphasis on rewarding good form.
c) I want Youngy to get a full game this week for a big body with strong clearance winning ability in the midfield, and if Gray goes back to the SANFL then I can't think of who else to put the sub vest on. We all remember what happened the last two times O'Shea was sub ...

Also, even though I personally would have left him out for another week based on match-up reasons, part of me is happy that Hombsch has been brought straight back. It's confirmation that Ken considers him a part of our 'best 22', as he should be.

Listening to one of the footy shows The_Wookie posted, it was noted that Geelong's delivery out in front of Hawkins really hurt Hawthorn. Gibson couldn't get in as third man up.

O'Shea could have a role of being a cutoff defender to circuit break delivery ahead of Hawkins. Broadbent is usually the +1 but O'Shea is a bit taller and has a bigger engine. Plus Broady is more an offensive weapon and how many times do you want one bloke run into by Hawkins? Imagine being the +1 in front of Tony Lockett.

Still I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see Sam Gray hold his spot ... although the coaching panel might query his size against the Geelong Godzilla squad.

I see your point Ford, I certainly won't be burning down Alberton if O'Shea holds his spot or anything, but I'm not even that worried about Hawkins to be honest. The only two good games he's played this year were against the inexperienced Jack Frost and a horribly undersized Kyle Cheney. I think that Bobby in current form combined with our usual team defence (O'Shea is a valuable contributor to that team defence, but it's certainly capable of functioning without him) will be enough to hold him unless our midfield is getting pantsed, and if our midfield is getting pantsed we probably won't be winning the game anyway.

We could probably even play Hombsch in that role. Carlile to Hawkins, Trengove to resting ruck and Jonas to Mitch Brown would free Hombsch up to play a Nick Maxwell type role (except he can actually defend a man and he can actually kick the ball, so he'll be better at it than Maxwell is). Remember how good he was as a loose man in his first game for us against the Bulldogs last year?

I wouldn't be surprised if Hombsch sticks to Hawkins like glue spoiling all day. Seems to play closer to his man than Carlile and a better spoiler.

Hawkins would be too strong for Hombsch.
Let our midfielders pressure so they have to drop the ball on Hawkins' head while Carlile wrestles him. Hombsch with his aerial and spoiling prowess can come in to spoil or mark.

ummm...is Hombsch tall/strong enough for Hawkins? Jackson or Bobbie for mine.
P Stewart could have been very handy v Geelong.
Glad Monfries not picked.
Is Benny Newton on interchange or emergencies?

Newton will play for the Magpies.

I was locked onto O'Shea staying in but if Ken is that keen on Hombsch that is a swag of tall defenders given Jonas can play tall. So yeah I can see Gray edging O'Shea out, although Ken likes O'Shea in the defensive unit.

Wonder if they would consider letting O'Shea run around in the forward line? The lack of a mid-sized lead up forward is why I was a bit surprised Paul Stewart didn't at least get in the squad.

In Ken we trust and all that.

Just on O'Shea.... If he fails to really start having an impact, I can see the forgotten man, Campbell Heath putting some pressure on. I really liked what he brought to the table in the first half of last season. So professional in everything he does.

I reckon Heath missed one target last year, which was immediately after I yelled out "this bloke never makes a mistake"

I would be very interested in seeing Hombsch or Jonas go forward for a period of time, both strong bodies. Hombsch played forward in U18s, although im not sure about Jonas. It would be a gamble considering Jonas is such as asset down back, but still something to consider.

Just saw the teams for SANFL, I know they can simply pull a guy out of the SANFL but, its showing only one change

Out: Young
In : Hombsch

You might be thinking of Robbie Young who is on the bench on the SANFL team.

Schulzenfest strikes again. Don't bother waiting until Thursday for the team next week lads, just ask me on Monday morning :D

Final Team
Hombsch in

O'Shea out

I'm cool with that although would have liked to see Newts get a gig.
If Newts rips it up this week in SANFL...he is bound to play against GWS with perhaps Cassisi resting.
It will be great to have Jack "the fist" Hombsch back in. Apparently he's a champion bloke as well.
