get rid of grigg and I would take it

apologies if mentioned somewhere in this thread but does anyone have a prognosis on Griff's injury? How long is he expected to be out?

Mr Magic and tigerninja - Last year, I was the head statistician for the Richmond VFL team so not to be arrogant but my knowledge of many of our players is greater than many on here. I was fortunate enough to be part of the inner sanctum.

In his 1st year, Matt showed so much promise as an 18 year old in the VFL. His clearance work was extraordinary at Coburg.

In 2014, his 2nd year, he continued to develop, learn and become even more dominant in the VFL. He was constantly getting his 20+ touches, 5+ clearances a game and every time he rested forward, he kicked a goal. Plus, his skills and smarts are divine.

This year, he was our best perfomed Tiger in our VFL practise matches and then deservedly got the call up last week to the seniors.

I know he only had 7 possessions, but he also laid 3 tackles and he played only a half of footy.

The reason it is ludicrous as to him being dropped is because he is part of our future. He has never had a fair run at it (more than 1 or 2 successive games). If he does get a fair run at it, it will allow him to get the hang of AFL footy better and grasp the understanding of what is needed to perform at the highest level. He is only 20/21, has all the tools required, now just needs a go. He's earnt it.

If he gets dropped, I will be ropable.

I was part of the inner sanctum last year too, but i'm just an insider this year.

Have you sugar coated it at all? Are his clearances effective? Why does the VFL side win when he's not in it?

I am a believer of giving youngsters successive games though, we are the worst at this. 3-4 successive games at AFL level will give you a good read into a player. Unless of course it's blatantly obvious they aren't ready, like what Drummond was showing before his injury.

No sugar coating whatsoever.

He was far, far superior to Kamdyn last year, that's for sure. So if Kmac can make a good fist of it, I have every faith that Matt can too.

The VFL side beating the horrid outfit that is Frankston without Matt means absolutely nothing.

His clearances were very effective. He is a class player. He was for SA in the under 18's and he has been since the day he arrived at the club.

Your last sentence hits the nail on the head, we have never been great with giving much needed continuity to youngsters. Matt deserves continuity. He's done everything right since being at the club.

I'm in if they give arnot a good run as well, what did you think of him in your statistician days?

I also think when has been given a game he been played a little out of position
He's not super quick but he finds the ball and makes good decisions and also had great foot skills. I would play him every day over Morris lloyd gordon grigg

Think Vickery, Ellis and Foley should all be given games this week. I'd also find a spot for Chaplin to help organise the defence.

Would also like to see Arnot and McDonough keep their places in the team too. Arnot was okay I thought (given how dysfunctional our forwardline was on Friday) plus McDonough's pin point kicking might be handy across halfback given Drummond's injury.

  • Griffiths out for Vickery (inj). No brainer really given Griff's injury - his kicking on Friday was very poor so perhaps a game in the 2s will just be a fresh reminder he's got to take his chances too. Also gives Vickery the chance to make a claim for the spot. Ultimately, its good for us if they are pushing each other for selection.
  • Drummond out for Foley (inj). I know some people say he's not part of the future but on form, deserves a game and we need to get a win to get the season back on a positive W/L footing.
  • Batchelor out for Chaplin (need Chaplin's leadership downback to help marshal the troops - too many times on Friday did I see our players failing to pick up their opponents. I'm not sure about Batchelor's game on Friday - he didn't stand out as being excessively 'poor' at the game but couldn't find a place for him).
  • Gordon/Lloyd out for C.Ellis (opted to have Corey as the sub - not sure if he can play as a small forward?) Could just as easily drop Lloyd instead of Gordon - neither did much on Friday from what I can remember but both can make a bit of an impact on the scoreboard at times. Need to find consistency to their games if they want to be long term AFL players.

B: Morris, Astbury, Chaplin
HB: Houli, Rance, McDonough
C: B.Ellis, Cotchin, McIntosh
HF: Edwards, Vickery, Martin
F: Lloyd, Riewoldt, Arnot
R: Maric, Miles, Foley
I: Hunt, Grigg, Vlastuin
S:C. Ellis

I'm personally all for giving McDonough some continuity, reckon he would offer us more than Lloyd and Morris at this stage.
I'm just worried that he is a tad too slow and falls into the same basket as many of our players, in that he is not big enough to play inside, not damaging or quick enough on the outside, and doesn't apply enough pressure as a tackler. That sums up a lot of our team aside from the key position..at least when we look/play bad anyway..
McDonough is said to have elite foot skills, we have actually done pretty well with recruiting decent kicks in the past few years, we are a far cry better than when Richo was playing. If he were playing now he'd have kicked over 1000 goals in his career, balls would have been hitting him lace out on the chest.
However elite kicking isn't enough, but yeah I do hope he gets a chance at a full game against Geelong through the middle and across half forward.

Therefore my changes would probably be:

OUT: Griffiths (inj), Hunt (inj), Drummond (inj), Morris, Lloyd

IN: Vickery, Chaplin, Foley, Lennon, C. Ellis

If Deledio and/or Conca are fit, then both in for Gordon and Arnot.

I wholehartedly agree about Arnot also.

Matty is as tough as they come, a lovely kick and is evasive... His only problem is that he isn't the smartest of footballers and doesn't run to the right spots.

I had to personally film him during an entire game last year just so the coaches could analyse his running patterns.

However, in saying this- when we were down at half time and needed someone to stand up, Arnot always seemed to come out and be the guy who lifted in the 3rd. Happened many times last year. It's a good trait.

He busts his gut and if he can become a little bit smarter, I think he holds a future.

What is wrong with Hunt? Havent heard much about what seemed to be an injury he sustained during the match.

Matt is a great mid/forward... He is not a HB and is wasted there.

I want him to stay in too. Pinch hit in the middle and play that high hf role. Lennon shoukd be playing too. Both players have a much higher ceiling than lloyd and gordon

I thought Maric was good, dont know whether I'm crazy or other posters are crazy.

Most likely, we are all ******* crazy:eek::p:D:drunk:

I think Maric may need to be rested..he looks knackered...in the least, needs to have someone ( Hampson) give him a fair chop out in ruck duties
Hampson being an excellent tap ruckman will give our mids first go at getting the clearance...that's my way of thinking anyways

Should be playing as that defensive forward that can get ball and kick goals
