The Hoon has already shown that in time he may turn out more than decent at AFL level. We could even say that he showed more than that.

He is definitely a player that could improve our team and giving him gametime is the right thing to do. It's not as if he's taking Wine's or Ebert's spot.

Funny enough, an important player in this side is Impey. He can tag the oppositions quicker players. He'll need to go to Motlop. The struggles of the lasty few weeks has been because our coaching staff always seemed to want to get our run going by switching the ball and opening up the field. A lot of the players have mentioned how we are getting used to the new game plan but the coaches reacted quickly to their credit and made a few tweaks. What I was disappointed at was the work rate of other teams was higher than our because they were fighting to keep the ball locked in and moving in their direction. We got a lesson from Brisbane, Wet Toast and Richmond but we have started turning it around.

Firstly, "defense first". We need to have the desire to lock the ball in as much as the opposition. We sat back and tried to force them to be accountable to the way we positioned ourselves around the ball but they didn't care because the ball wasn't coming out of the congestion they created and when they got possession it was easy to use each other on the overlap and make us look slow and lazy.

Second, once we have a contest we can need to play on their terms a bit but with possession don't blaze away and use short kicks or run as a group. If a kick doesn't come off their is still plenty of congestion to make it a contest anyway. This is where the Doggies and Melbourne came undone. By the end of the game everybody is stuffed and kicking skills and fitness becomes more important. They can't keep up with us over 4 quarters.

For those baffled about the Hoon selection they need to realize the Sammy has sacrificed his own game to learn to become a tagger. There would have been an adjustment period and less possessions. I think the coaching staff wants that Kane tagger who can run with players with a big tank but are also smart enough to run off and get their own ball. If he's coming into the team his apprenticeship may be over and it's time to get to work.
