Changes vs Geelong

I like to see Monfries come back in, because every time I think of memorable Port moments recently, he's ALWAYS right there.

Showdown v Adelaide 2014 - Monfries "miracle bounce" followed by centering the ball for Wingard for the winner.

Finals win v Collingwood 2014 - Goal and right in Heath Shaw's face to bust the game open.

PF v Hawthorn - draw the free kick against Gibson to kickstart the final quarter burst, then marked and kicked the goal that put us within 4 points, then had Lake dead to rights holding the ball in the last seconds.

Ryder has paid us back for our loyalty to him over the last year, I reckon Angus deserves the same chance.

Each to their own but in my opinion Sam Gray is developing into a very solid AFL footballer. He needs a bit more polish when he finishes off but he is no orphan.

The only other player I'd like to see in the side is Doogie.

Not convinced with Ah Chee at all. Finished the second half well but he has struggled to be consistent at AFL level and not sure he has the ability to be consistent.

Respect your opinion, but I'd like to know how you arrived at your conclusion that "Sam Gray is developing into a very solid AFL footballer".
Since debuting in 2014 his game hasn't developed at all. He's exactly the same footballer now as he was then. An undersized, small forward/mid who doesn't crumb but tries hard and applies the occasional tackle or does the occasional good bit of play. He's added no new tricks, no strings to his bow, still burns it, and still struggles getting any penetration in his kick. In short, he's reached his ceiling and doesn't seem to have a defined role in the side.

im firmly now in the robbie for a rest camp.
Yep I agree ... rest him this week!

Edit ... In all seriousness, people are calling the club dishonest, and Ken a liar over this issue of Robbie. Go back and look at footage of him playing in the months after his return from his knee reco, he walked, and has continued to walk, with the exact same limp people are saying is because of his groins knee calf.

It is clear he still has issues that stem from his reco, and plays sore each week. But will probably do so until he retires - He will rest then. Until then the medicos will just manage him. Sadly, we might have to get used to the fact that we will only ever see an 85% fit Robbie for the remainder of his career. :(

Sam Gray is handy depth midfielder but he needs to find a role to play when he isn't in the middle. He can't play small forward so I'd rather find someone else.

We all grizzle here about our forward entries and our skewed inside 50 to goal ratio. I think our first inside 50 in the China game was Wingard marking just beyond the 50, turning, and trying to hit Sam Gray who was leading out from the goal square. The ball went slightly over his head and was easily punched over the boundary by the GCS defender. Kind of summed it all up, and getting that aspect right is just about the final piece of the puzzle.

The only change I really want to see is ... us whipping their candy asses!

If Geelong play anything like they did against Essendon, we will make the wins against Carlton, Fremantle, Lions and Gold Coast look like a subtle pat on the bottom.

In the past couple of years we've played into their hands by picking sides that allowed their stronger bodies to bully us into submission. Please don't make that mistake again.

I reckon Sam has definitely improved with his positioning, always seems to be in the right place and the right time. His skills though have plateaued. I reckon what we're seeing now is his ceiling. Up to the Atley's on our list to force Sam out.

You know, I was literally shaking at the beginning of the China game. That win was so important. But now, I'm thinking Geelong is even more so.

Atley should have a run after the Geelong game.

If you want Palmer to play ahead of Monfries fair enough. Johnson though needs to lift after putting in a poor display vs Sturt.

You can see the value of Johnson in his first game. Our AFL game and SANFL game are different beasts. He seems to have goal sense and our game plan suits a small forward who can make the most of turnovers inside 50. Would take Gus as first choice but Johnson as second.

I think you're wrong here. He often found AFL too quick for him and couldn't read the game in 2014.
He also has one of the top 5 non preferred legs in the team

Lol. We all know they are going to come out and play their best game of the year against us, as they do every year.

Yeah, absolutely. I reckon Geelong's tackling pressure over the next two weeks especially will be immense. I'm really beginning to like our structures and besides our woeful I50 disposal I'm beginning to believe.

Who replaces him though?

His career output in almost every category is better than Monfries and he is also more versatile than Monfries.

I also like Grays speed and hunger for the contest and is averaging 7 contested possessions per game.

Would love to see Howard get a gig next game. Not sure who he'd come in for, but I really think we need to develop another tall KPF this year, and he could be the man.

Agreed, he adds a lot of versatility to our side and takes a bit of pressure off Jacko.
