My guess is Schache comes in. If Sweet is being dropped he’s probably not going to want to have Buku and Marra in the same team (not while their TOG% aren’t high).

Schache played ruck last week and kicked 3. He got pantsed in hit outs but he was good around the park.
This would be a really bad outcome.

Anyone know what the actual determining factor is for who gets polkadot guernsy at training? Westy & Marra this week - I don’t believe it’s for BOG but maybe something like best team player, most effort etc can’t remember what it actually is.

Although it’s been a pretty reliable indicator recently that the bloke that gets it from the 2s is likely to play seniors
Domestique - it's the weekly recognition of effort, following instructions, etc

After his strong contested intercept marks on Charlie Dixon last year and Buddy earlier this season how many contested grabs do we expect Gardy to take on Hawkins tomorrow night? Might depend on whether the umps allow Hawkins to push him in the back or not.

If we have to choose between the floppy inflatable flailing arm ruck/forwards, I would accept Schache purely on the basis that he can actually deliberately kick goals rather than have them happen to him by accident once a month like Cordy.
Ugh he’s just sooo uncompetitive in the ruck though, makes Cordy look like big Willbur - maybe we try a new sucker through there, O’Brien not overly needed this week I wouldn’t have thought? Although I’d like to settle our backline instead of dismantling it for spare parts.

Schache probably the best option considering he at least has a tank. I’m pretty worried about Timmy off his preparation getting blown up by an absolute endurance beast in Blicavs, if he doesn’t have suitable support tbh - as bad as people say Geelongs ruck stocks are I think it’s important to keep Timmy fresh for this one - no point Tim having an offensive impact if Blicavs has a bigger one going the other way

If Stanely doesn't come up this week it couod really steer the direction of our selection.
Stanley out means Blicavs must ruck, meaning the Cats are short on tall defenders. Surely this is a strong case for Sweet to ruck so English can play are fair chunk of the game forward???

Out: Buku

Love what Buku brings, he's just going to need to find some other ways to get involved.

Having listened to Bevo's press conference not sure anyone can conclude that Schache is a likely to come in. His name was not mentioned.

Bevo however did discuss Marra, saying that he has had two good weeks in the VFL. Could we play a three prong attack with Buku, Naughton & Marra ?

Why would you play a slow tap only ruckman against a smaller quier more agile opponent who racks up the pill when you have your 1st choice being 10cm taller then his opponent with the same attributes?

Baz confirmed in but a six goal BOG performance can't be guaranteed.

That's what I thought I read. But the second part of the headline was in relation to six goals by Marra won't guarantee him an AFL return.🤣

At his age it's not the worst thing to help him with consistency to string together a good 3-4 week block of better performances

He wasn’t best on ground. I like JUH and he looked a lot stronger last week but he wasn’t up against much. Couple of his goals were soft frees and the struggle to stay in the game for 4 quarters was still in evidence. He’s getting close but I’d still have concerns throwing him in as the second tall to Naughton.

Who was best on then?

I’d be wary of going Buku & JUH in the same forward line so for mine he only comes in if Buku needs a spell. He was definitely the most effective player on the ground for 4 qtrs though

So that’s the reason and my theory ( based on documentary evidence from another sport) is wrong. I thought it was based on performance such as winning time trials and other things and the jersey was given as an award. I thought in the early days the award was sponsored by the Footscray Mail which back then may have been printed on polka dot paper. My theory is backed up by a similar occurrence in other sports ( admittedly not the polka dot paper bit).

Do you think Naughts, Bruce and JUH works in 1-2 months? Or is JUH still not ready even for that third tall role? Send Buku/Schache back or have them as sub

I’d be keen to at least trial it, I’m a big fan of the 3 talls up front so going forward that would be my ideal set up. I think Jamarra can provide enough there to be 3rd tall even now and his pressure is pretty good most weeks and Naughts pressure is the best in the league so not concerned about us being too tall.

But in saying that that also relys on Bruce rucking which I’m not sure is the best idea coming off a knee so I guess we’ll see how he comes back

It is given as an award, of guess time trials and improvement would be a factor during our season.
IIRC it's a tradition borrowed from cycling that we've adopted as a bit of fun and recognition

Mofra was right about the recognition being stolen from cycling, where the Domestique in a cycling team sacrifices his/her own prospects of winning to support the team...often leading the team out when there is a breakaway or a headwind that needs to be battled. The Domestique is often the hardest trainer, the fittest and hardest working rider on a team. In French the term means servant.

The polka dot jersey is also a cycling reference but in this case it signifies the King of the Mountains - the cyclist who is leading the points table in the climbing stages of a muti-day race gets to wear the polka-dot jersey. Pinkish-red dots for the Giro D'italia, yellow dots for the Tour de France. We for some reason have chosen the jersey from the Giro for the Domestique to wear.

JUH definitely was, well according to coaches votes as he got a perfect 10.

Of the AFL listed boys, I thought Wallis and Schache did well. Bedendo has also had a good couple of weeks now. Issue for Wallis though is he was playing largely midfield which isn't of any use in seniors.

In saying that, I missed large chunks of last week's game so others may have a better idea. Testekill watches most games I think?

Disagree with the above poster who said Mara wasn't best on, in my view he and Schache could have raffled BOG, with JJ not too far behind. I watched at least 3 quarters and felt I didn't miss too much. There was a reason Schache ended up with 3 himself, the Willy defenders were so pre-occupied in trying to defend Mara they basically ignored a host of our other forwards. Mara competed well all day and just caused headaches. His pressure around the ball was decent if not a little clumsy with his tackling / bump attempts but you couldn't ask much more from a key forward. Bedendo was great in patches, Wally was solid, but in my eyes it was Mara and Schache that were 1-2 in the votes.

Going by what Bevo mentioned in his presser today it will be

In: Smith
Out: Sweet

No indication of who plays ruck support for English but I assume it will be Buku or OBrien.

We actually have an enormous amount of options at 2nd ruck/forward. Too bad they are all very ordinary. Sweet, Cordy, Schache, Buku. Cordy has already had his chance and Sweet doesn’t suit that role at all.

I’m all for bringing in JUH and giving Buku a shot at it through. Geelong have a weak ruck division so it’s not a bad week to try it out.

The low TOG % for JUH & Buku is a small concern but given the running capacity of our deep midfield and English, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be easy to cover.

From a ruck perspective, I would anticipate that we might be a bit edgy this week. You might see a Josh Dunkley or a Marcus Bontempelli put their hand up to take the odd hitout. We'll come up with a strategy that supports Tim and makes the best use of his talents while we work through the different phases of the game. Geelong are probably a bit more similar to us in how they strategise around the ruck and that allows us to do something a bit different.
