2012 and 2013 are clearly the two outliers in Reilly's career. 2012 was career best. 2013 was career worst (until it was prematurely ended by injury).

I'm not expecting him to return to the form he showed in 2012, but if he can get back to the form he showed from 2005-2011 then his position in the team will be completely secure.

Makes the assumption that previous selections were correct.

Good Stat.

Whats more concerning and more accurately reflects the fact that we are 1-3.... your stat or the one below?

In his 3 games Reilly has more kicks (38) and less clangers (9) than our best player, future captain and golden boy Patrick Dangerfield has in 4 games (36 kicks and 12 Clangers)....

Reilly wasn't great against St.Kilda - but was nowhere near as bad as many on here bang on about.

Very selective statistical analysis there.

Dangerfield gets more of the ball with a significantly higher contested possession rate, does more damage when he gets it, lays more tackles etc.

And that's during a down year.

Is the gist of your argument that Reilly shouldn't be under pressure because he's less important to our chances of winning than others?

Not to mention, that Reilly gets a lot of cheap possessions across half back.

Surely Shaw & Martin are SANFL bound. Crouch & Lynch must be playing in the AFL. That leaves one of Reilly, Laird & Grigg to miss out - much to the surprise of nobody (I think we've all known that this was going to be the case). I'm guessing that Grigg will get to play in the SANFL this week.

It definitely won't be Laird

If Grigg is fit (still needs to pass a fitness test then Radar goes -IMO

Talia - Cameron
Rutten - Patton
Hartigan - Boyd.

We match up on them OK with three strong talls in defence

Correct call I believe.

Do you think a 30 year old slowing Reilly can get near his best and it will be good enough to keep his spot in the side for the next two seasons?

I think he can get back to his best, and if he can he most certainly has a spot in our best 22. He wasn't great against St.Kilda, but he was nowhere near as bad as many on here say. However, if his stays at last Sunday's level or declines then he could very well find himself out of the side (which I wouldn't be upset with).

And I think the real issue is you hold the superstars like Danger to account and aren't as demanding on 200 game veterans. Besides the chance of winning a flag are enhanced by having more players closer to Dangers ability than Reillys.

I expect more from Danger than I do from Reilly. I am sure most rational people would.

No shit. Of course our chances of winning a flag would be greater if we had more players similar to Danger than to Reilly. But in case you haven't noticed - superstars don't grow on trees. Players of Danger's calibre are pretty rare - so it hurts us a team a hell of a lot more when Danger doesn't perform than when Reilly doesn't perform.

Reilly has failed as a mid, failed as a tagger and had one decent season as a defender when he didn't have an opponent. If you're happy with having players like that in your team don't complain when we never win another flag.

You keep trotting that line out. Haven't heard that line in reference to Jaensch this year. Nor Henderson last year.

To your little 'accepting mediocrity' dig. What bullshit. Brent Reilly in our team is the reason we will never win another flag?

Otten back in the magoos :thumbsu:

Slowly getting our best players back. Good luck to him, hope its a smooth game and he pulls up well

Just need Tex to play now. Heart in mouth stuff for his first few touches and the first time he is tackled!

Crouch snr too

(I've already written off VB and Hendo for 2014) Give those selectors some headaches!

Danger is a far far better player. No arguments there.

Is the gist of your argument that Reilly shouldn't be under pressure because he's less important to our chances of winning than others?

The gist of my argument is that the Reilly bashing is extremely over done and boring. It creeps into every thread by the same people. It is analysed and discussed way more than the players that are really affecting our teams form. Anytime discussion comes up about how Danger doesn't get the football enough or is playing poorly it is deflected to his team mates not looking out for him.

Reserves side

The SANFL team is:

B: Rory Laird, Luke Thompson, Sam Siggins

HB: Brent Reilly, Sam Shaw, Jake Kelly

C: Mitch Grigg, Tom Lynch, Brodie Martin

HF: Jason Porplyzia, Shaun McKernan, Riley Knight

F: Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Lewis Johnston, Charlie Cameron

R: Angus Graham, Jarryd Lyons, Matt Crouch

I/c (from): James Battersby, Ian Callinan (c), Alex Spina, Rory Atkins, Andy Otten

In: Laird, Reilly, Grigg, Martin, Porplyzia, M. Crouch, Otten
Out: Bailey, Osborn (inj), M. Thompson, Hurley-Wellington, Davis-Neale
Even though 4 players will drop out, the side is looking more competitive o

Welcome back to Andy Otten - hopefully gets though ok. Best 21 all day every day - love seeing him float through the forward line

Hope he has a good game and forces himself back into our team.

Bullshit he isn't. Those players might be heavily tagged, but I've never seen Ablett and Pendles physically smashed.

You haven't watched much football then if you think Gary Ablett was never physically smashed. Since 2007 - Gazza has been smashed week in week out. I remember watching a game in 2008 - where Josh Carr for Freo was getting stuck into him along with half of the freo side helping him out. Shit - even watch games from last year. I remember the game against Melbourne he had two taggers giving him far more attention than Danger has ever received.

Every single elite player Selwood, Harvey, Judd, Ablett, Mitchell, etc has had to learn to deal with a tag, being roughed up and playing through it. When you learn how to do play through it - it becomes a waste of energy. Its why so many teams don't bother putting a hard tag on Gary Ablett anymore. He will find a way through it, so your time is better spent tagging a different player out of the game.

Following on from this.....

If Rutten has another average-poor game and Hartigan looks solid, do we roll with a backline looking to the future of Talia, Hartigan and Otten?

Wouldn't mind seeing this set up until at least the bye with Dogs and Demons next. Then reassess after the bye with the Pies I think it is next.

Yours wasn't?

Well, no. Actually I think they relate to the same issue.

My suggestion is that Reilly isn't playing a role that requires him to be particularly accountable or win his own ball. He needs to use it when it's given to him.

If you can demonstrate it's overdone, that's fine. Happy to read. His performance was pretty bad last week though, so it's likely to be topical. Turn overs through the corridor, and getting run down in scoring range are big no nos.

I'm not deflecting anything from Danger's performance this year- it's been below his standards, and he needs to lift. I suspect he's carrying an injury. Looked positively ill at times last week.

Im thinking that Rutten's role this year is like Chapman's in that he may not play all the games over the season and with Hartigan coming on well he offers us some flexibility.

I admired and respect the Truck has been a great servant and IMO legend of our Club his defensive work sometimes does not get noticed or appreciated as much as others, but I will miss the Truck when he put out to rest.
