In his 3 games Reilly has more kicks (38) and less clangers (9) than our best player, future captain and golden boy Patrick Dangerfield has in 4 games (36 kicks and 12 Clangers)....

Reilly wasn't great against St.Kilda - but was nowhere near as bad as many on here bang on about.

Very selective statistical analysis there.

Dangerfield gets more of the ball with a significantly higher contested possession rate, does more damage when he gets it, lays more tackles etc.

And that's during a down year.

Is the gist of your argument that Reilly shouldn't be under pressure because he's less important to our chances of winning than others?

Not to mention, that Reilly gets a lot of cheap possessions across half back.

I think he can get back to his best, and if he can he most certainly has a spot in our best 22. He wasn't great against St.Kilda, but he was nowhere near as bad as many on here say. However, if his stays at last Sunday's level or declines then he could very well find himself out of the side (which I wouldn't be upset with).

I expect more from Danger than I do from Reilly. I am sure most rational people would.

No shit. Of course our chances of winning a flag would be greater if we had more players similar to Danger than to Reilly. But in case you haven't noticed - superstars don't grow on trees. Players of Danger's calibre are pretty rare - so it hurts us a team a hell of a lot more when Danger doesn't perform than when Reilly doesn't perform.

The gist of my argument is that the Reilly bashing is extremely over done and boring. It creeps into every thread by the same people. It is analysed and discussed way more than the players that are really affecting our teams form. Anytime discussion comes up about how Danger doesn't get the football enough or is playing poorly it is deflected to his team mates not looking out for him.

You haven't watched much football then if you think Gary Ablett was never physically smashed. Since 2007 - Gazza has been smashed week in week out. I remember watching a game in 2008 - where Josh Carr for Freo was getting stuck into him along with half of the freo side helping him out. Shit - even watch games from last year. I remember the game against Melbourne he had two taggers giving him far more attention than Danger has ever received.

Every single elite player Selwood, Harvey, Judd, Ablett, Mitchell, etc has had to learn to deal with a tag, being roughed up and playing through it. When you learn how to do play through it - it becomes a waste of energy. Its why so many teams don't bother putting a hard tag on Gary Ablett anymore. He will find a way through it, so your time is better spent tagging a different player out of the game.

If Rutten has another average-poor game and Hartigan looks solid, do we roll with a backline looking to the future of Talia, Hartigan and Otten?

Wouldn't mind seeing this set up until at least the bye with Dogs and Demons next. Then reassess after the bye with the Pies I think it is next.

Well, no. Actually I think they relate to the same issue.

My suggestion is that Reilly isn't playing a role that requires him to be particularly accountable or win his own ball. He needs to use it when it's given to him.

If you can demonstrate it's overdone, that's fine. Happy to read. His performance was pretty bad last week though, so it's likely to be topical. Turn overs through the corridor, and getting run down in scoring range are big no nos.

I'm not deflecting anything from Danger's performance this year- it's been below his standards, and he needs to lift. I suspect he's carrying an injury. Looked positively ill at times last week.

Im thinking that Rutten's role this year is like Chapman's in that he may not play all the games over the season and with Hartigan coming on well he offers us some flexibility.

I admired and respect the Truck has been a great servant and IMO legend of our Club his defensive work sometimes does not get noticed or appreciated as much as others, but I will miss the Truck when he put out to rest.
