Hi guys
Get there's a bit of feeling between our supporters over trades, I come in peace
Looking forward to our last home game Saturday against a side we haven't seen at Spotless. Pity injuries mean we wont see some of your best. I hope it's a good game and both sides get through it in good shape.
For those of you in Sydney or travelling I expect you'll find Spotless welcoming, and a great little ground to watch footy. The Bledisloe game is across the road at ANZ starting half hour after our game. Not sure it means much but there will be lots of of Rugby fans about on the way out of the ground.

Not sure what you mean by good game, but you know in your first season where it would be 10 goals down at half time and the rest of the game would be a snoozefest. Well, if you called those 'good games', then that's what you're going to get - only you'll be the ones up of course.

Perhaps that's all you're after, but if you're after a decent footy game, I'd say skip Spotless all together and just go straight to ANZ. Even watching the warm-ups there will be a more thrilling fixture.

Exactly my point, sutcliffe for Hughes... Would rather have Hughes exposure

Sutcliffe looked like he'd suffered shell shock in the weeks leading up to his (2nd) axing, completely devoid of confidence and frankly he looked like he wanted to hide behind the goal umpire. Just costly turnover after costly turnover. He's played no footy since then, hasn't even had a chance to beat up on WAFL players to regain some mojo. He has, however, watched our midfielders get their arses handed to them and seen our defenders get overwhelmed and, lucky him, now he's a part of that again and playing GWS on the rebound to boot! I think I'll just listen to this one on radio because it's gonna be UGLY.

We have absolutely nothing to gain from playing him and honestly I'm a little ticked off. I know they're already looking ahead to next year but it doesn't excuse shithouse selection just because it's a dead rubber.

It's not all about Sutty, it's also about telling Hughes in plain terms that he's not up to it yet ... which is clearly true, he's not close. Hughes will get more chances next year you'd think.

Can't say I'm thrilled with the change myself, your post is a good one, but it's not the worst thing in the world either.

Sending Hughes a message is fine, but if he gets replaced by someone who was dropped for the same thing yet didn't have to come back via the 2's I wouldn't personally blame him for being a little jaded or even confused. I would actually have preferred Suban!

And no it's not the worst thing but I thought I'd fire up for once :p I'm in danger of falling into apathy which must be a self-defence mechanism.

Sutcliffe has not been as bad this season as some people insist. On some occasions he does turn it over more than is ideal. However he does try to give us some run and creativity out of the back half, qualities lacking for the most part in our other defenders. Unlike the others you seldom see Sutcliffe blindly bombing the ball back into the opposition press.

Oh yes, I suspect I'm there already.

And as for Hughes being confused; from what I've seen this year, being confused gets you IN the team not out of it.

Sutty is part of the future as well as Hughes. As you said, Sutty was shot 3 weeks ago after manfully battling it out in defence all season in a woeful side. As we all agree and many have stated in defence of Hughes performance last week, it's no easy gig playing in Freo's defence this year. Not one of our defenders have starred. No one has even consistently performed in our defence. You're assuming that he was dropped for his disposal. I've never heard Ross say that. Maybe the coach thought he just needed a freshen up?

Hughes is young and needs to know his performance last week wasn't good enough. He got replaced. How is that shithouse selection?

No ones performance was good enough last week except Walters. Sutcliffe is shot as his position of the last 2-3 years " has been woefully exposed because of no Dawson, mcpharlin, Johnson and duffield. Much like ibbotson this year. I'm just of the opinion that it's clear moribito isn't part of the plan going forward, potentially Suban etc, there's two games to go, give Hughes the chance to experience another forward line to match on and get experience.

No doubt Sutcliffe's a confidence player. He's lacked it this year and his kicking has suffered badly. His 2013/14 seasons were fantastic, especially for his age, but this season the quantity (and quality) of inside 50s our backline's been peppered with have forced him too often to become a one-on-one defender, which is definitely not his forte.

It is alarming to think Sutcliffe will likely be a small defender for us for years to come, we have no replacement for him and it's unlikely we're going to trade anyone into his spot. Might be 3-4 years before a Hughes type can develop enough to take his spot.

Hughes won't need 3-4 years to take Sutcliffe's spot.

He hasn't been good but who has in defence? He's this years whipping boy around here.

He'll be depth next year so the board will need to find a replacement.

Collins. He's been a revelation this year. I can't wait for him and A.Pearce to get some good chemistry together in the off-season. One of the silver linings this season I reckon.

Well it is hard to see any area of the ground we can win in this game but I am particularly concerned about
1) GWS rebound out of defence if we just bomb it in - Wilson is back in and he is one their best rebounding defenders along with Shaw.
2) We will be done for height with the GWS game plan of hitting up a tall in the pocket. SNOS and Collins are way undersized versus Lobb and Patton and then there is Jeremy Cameron as well - who will probably have to covered by Ibbo.
3) Thought we could nullify Mumford with 211 but instead Griff and Clarke have to show something and get moving around the ground.

The key thing I would like to see signs of is actually lowering our eyes and hitting up targets inside 50. Without going to Pav all the time this week I would hope they can just go to whoever has made space because players like Yarran and Walters and Ballas can really hurt if given space and actually used. Apeness will create crumbs for kicks under pressure but that cannot be our preferred option (trying to crumb goals from pack bombs).

No doubt a revelation due to where he's come from and he's played a couple of slashing games but a few where he's got towelled up too. Which is not a poor reflection on him, my point is that 1. we've severely missed Duff and Macca and 2. the midfield has leaked like a sinking ship, so defence is no place to consistently shine this year.

He's actually been quite good 1 v 1 this year. The issue has been without Duff he's being relied upon to do more kicking and running off than suits him, so he's getting exposed on the counter not only by his poor disposal but everyone else's.

Yep, that definitely also contributes. He's acquitted himself well enough as a defender for sure, but you'd be more comfortable in him playing the Duffield role than someone like Ibbotson for example. I guess we all thought that he was the natural progression (and he still might be) as his kicking while never sublime was always reliable. Johnson's absence has also been particularly disastrous for what's left of our defense.

Great points.

I doubt Sutty will end up being best 22 now that speed and skills are so highly valued in the AFL but as a very late pick he's done a great job. For example just a week before he was dropped he did a wonderful job on Heeney while he was playing forward. It wasn't until the second half that Horse moved him to the midfield and he went sick but up until then he'd done SFA but of course most don't notice that. They're too busy being seduced by Ibbo's possessions while the loose man.

And on Ibbo, you're right, he could never play the role that Sutty does. His only value is as a spare man in defence which firstly requires us to play a 5 man forward line and secondly, only works when the opposition coach allows him to be loose. Most this year haven't allowed it, hence his poor form.

I can't understand why they would play Sutcliffe who hasn't played for two weeks and was i'm assuming finally dropped for his poor disposal? Yes Hughes' disposal was poor and needs to work on it. For a younger player who has played over 70games Sutcliffe is showing no improvement.

would the club now have offered D.Pearce a two yr extension after his butchering of the ball over the last two months? I don't think so.
