He panics every time he gets it and gets brushed aside every time he tackles. If that sort of player is a ‘solid piece’ in our side, we might as well not bother

20th in meters gained at 435 m per game, 5.5 score involvements per game, 4.5 inside 50s per game. When it comes to being an outside midfielder, Atkins is well and truly doing what we're paying him for offensively.

Unfortunately, he's a classic outside midfielder in flaws as well as strengths hence why we're here and your bamboozled as to why he's still selected, because him getting brushed aside every time he tackles is very much a who cares thing. We're not playing him because he's a defensive behemoth, we're paying him to supplement our outside game.

So birdbrain says the players dropped is less about form and more about ‘ team balance ‘ then why would we have them on the emergency list ? We make zero sense. We will be destroyed. Dumb selections.
What? You put them in emergencies so they can replace players. "Team balance" doesn't mean they can't fit into the side if certain others go out.

So we pay massive overs for Gibbs, and then 18 months later we are dropping him every second game. The person who did this deal needs to be held accountable. But nobody at Adelaide is ever held accountable. He didn't deserve to be dropped the last two times. Also, the amount of people here who are treating the rumours of his gambling debts as a fact and the reason the club is dropping him is laughable. Not only that but people are adding in that Carlton were also aware of his debts when you have no idea if he has debts and what Carlton did or didn't know. I know for a fact he wanted a trade as his GF was suffering PND in a big way and was quite unstable because of it. Nothing to do with debts.
The club has lost the plot with selections this year. Something at the club is rotten, and I would not be surprised if we have another couple of players such as Keath and Greenwood who leave this year.
We just stink as a club at the moment.
Paragraphs mate.

Gws are going to put on a clinic Saturday night. This one could get ugly fast. If we stay even marginally close in this game i will be shocked.

lol, we're not getting thrashed by anyone at home. Even at our worst we don't tend to lose by more than 4-5 goals recently.

So Ben Hart has just said Douglas will play up forward, so again i ask who is the better forward, Douglas or Greenwood who can actually mark, something we can’t do up forward.
That's where I'm absolutely dumbfounded by the selection process.

We lose a very handy inside mid/forward, a balanced mid/ half back and a outside utility.

We bring in Douglas, probably the most unnatural forward to ever play up forward for sustained periods in a long time, Harto (understandable) and pure mid Crouch.

Why the hell is Douglas the fall back. Play a natural forward like stengle or, if we need to use them to soak up midfield minutes as a roation, any one of Ned/Poholke/Jones...

Douglas playing forward is a nonentity most of the time

Because some of the guys in the side are under injury clouds.

Not that hard to grasp.

Count how many times he turns it over on saturday night.. also count how many times he runs both ways and along with that how many times he squibs it.

An outside midfielder who isn't turning the ball over at a higher rate then most positions isn't doing his job properly. Atkins is expected to take risks with his disposals and go for options most would get told off for going for, much like Smith and Seedsman are. It's a necessary evil of the position.

Oh boy, you'll be in for a surprise when you see Atkins heat maps. He does a lot of hard running defensively, and squibs it is really also firmly in the bucket of "outside midfielder" problems. We're not paying for toughness here at all. We're paying for offensive production, and as the numbers I gave earlier indicated, we're getting a bit out of him.

You give me the choice between Atkins who does all of the things I want offensively in a lowly ranked outside option, yet can be exposed in a contest, or someone like Mackay who is brave in the contest, yet does not do all of the things offensively I want in an lowly ranked outside option, and I'm choosing Atkins every single time. Every coach in this league also chooses Atkins every single time.

Sure but all 3 just happen to be ok to come in? Seems unlikely that team balance is the reason

If we didn’t trade for him you’d still be banging on about it. He was also good for us last year.

Last year was a ****ing disaster.

I'm pretty sure I was indifferent to the trade - happy for the AFC to show some balls and roll the dice, but not desperate for it...

Would've had a different opinion if it was known that Gibbs had personal issues that would negatively impact his performance.

Just because we paid lots for him doesn't mean we should select him. Gibbs delivered on what we paid last year and the price looked ok this year he's been bog average.
Fair comment re the gambling and other stuff
Selections are better this year than in the past i reckon. Bit more unpredictable

The other 2 changes aren't surprising but Greenwood for Douglas? If they wanted a player that can better cover the ground against a quick midfield side, Greenwood for Jones will be understandable.....I am sensing we done another stuff-up like the West Coast game.

We won't be able to have direct replacements for everyone, but Mackay is one they will love as an emergency, he can replace Seeds, Milera, Gallucci, Brown, Atkins, Kelly or Smith. Balance dictates he's out for Hartigan this week, but he still has use as an emergency given he can cover a lot of players. Jacobs is obvious for being a replacement for JJ or ROB, Greenwood can take a forward or midfield position and Gibbs can cover any midfielder that may be out.

Most likely it's Greenwood for Matt Crouch (with CEY switching into Greenwoods role), and Sloane for Douglas. It does make me wonder if we're planning on Gallucci getting that midfield time, last week was a ridiculous game in terms of impact despite a lack of disposal so it would make sense timing wise, and Douglas has lived as a half forward/mid for the past few years.
