No way are we dropping Murphy.

We do that we're basically saying "Hey the only bloke who is prepared to smash in is ****! You guys just stand there and watch the opposition jump at it and get the footy. That's what we want! Tally ho chaps!".

FFS. Murph was the reason for 2 of the spilled goals in Q4. FFS.
Mate, 4 possessions, 1 tackle and no tackles inside 50. That’s a very poor game.

What you are also saying is that his replacement couldn’t offer the same defensive pressure but contribute more offensively.

The concern is it will be Douglas who replaces him, not McHenry.

I like Murphy and what he brings, but he’s had a fair run this year, time to have a look at Ned.

Posted in another thread, probably belongs here:

Please note, Atkins fans/haters:

@1.20 left to play, Atkins dropped a chest mark, by getting his hands into a strange position, with absolutely no contact from any Melbourne player. My take is he heard footsteps and braced himself for what he seems to dread --- getting hit. This is one reason why people want him dropped.
And yet ...
Not long before that, with 2.05 to play, he dished out a lovely handball to CEY. This is one reason why people want to retain him.
His good is good, but his bad is worse than terrible and very often costly (oppo goals, breaks forward momentum by kicking to oppo, or ootf). Weighing up the former against the latter, good vs terrible, don't we have ANYONE in the SANFL who can do better than that?
Ned. I watched him closely yesterday and he seems very composed.

Out: Sloane, Mackay, Murphy, Atkins.

In: M.Crouch, Hartigan, McHenry, Douglas/Jones.

Hard to imagine we do it - we never do that many changes. But it feels good typing it.

Will be interesting to see if they bring sauce back as ROB got more hitouts than gawn...but gawns were far more damaging AND around the ground gawn was far far superior. That GWS have mumford as well might dictate sauce comes back.

Other than that..m crouch has to be ok by now and is like for like with Sloane. I would also drop 2 of Murphy, Atkins and McKay based on performance and bring in mchenry as the pressure forward and Jones and just keep the kid in for an extended run.

It will be instructive to see how seedsman pulls up as he looked slow yesterday and hos knee might still be troubling him

You're acting like Sauce would have done any better vs Gawn....

ROB kept up with Gawn all night, he just refused to be beaten.

As for the ins and outs.

OUT

Sloane - Didn't look too bad but no risks.

Mackay - Single worst half in AFC history. Last in, first out.

Murphy - 2nd average game in a row. We have talent waiting.

Atkins - The total refusal to put his body on the line when it was his turn just HAS to be punished.

IN

Crouch - Hopefully anyway.

Stengle - Wasn't the best yesterday, but his body of work needs rewarding.

McHenry - Play the Atkins role but with physicality.

Poholke - Give him a block of games to see whether he has it. We will probably pick Dougy after yesterday though.

ROB was absolutely terrible for the first half. Like, absolutely embarassed by a master.

That being said, keep him in. Jacobs can wait til after the bye, and ROB learns more this way - and I don't think someone will pants him like Max did anytime soon.

I think Hartigan has to come back. Our structures look rubbery without him there. Keath really struggles when he has to play a true nullifying defender's role - he isn't a one-on-one KPD.

Add Hartigan in for Kelly. Keath needs him.

What did you think of Jones? Ten clearances is an impressive state.

What position was he playing, wing/midfield rotation?
Seemed to playing on ball from what I saw. I moved positions around the ground several times during the game but every time I did the play switched to the other side but from what I could see he played a solid game.

Where is Ned playing currently? I've only seen small pieces of our sanfl games this year and from what I've seen, he has been playing more as a mid than a small forward.

Similarly Jones has put in his best work at the coal face in my opinion, rather than out on a wing.

I won't comment on if Atkins should be dropped based on his game vs melbourne, but I will say that currently in our SANFL team, we have no ready replacement purely based on running patterns.

Atkins racks up the ball around the ground because he knows where to be, has the enendurance to get there and works himself into space for the easy receive. The only other player with that kind of nouse for the role is the under done Seedsman imo.

Our other outside mids, Dmac, Milera and Gooch don't really have those around the ground outside, either running in straight lines from the back half for loose balls or handball receives (Dmac), skirting around the edges of the contest for the receive (Gooch) or preferring to be relatively balanced inside/out, winning the ball himself in tight or receiving in close to the contest (Milera).

I fear that dropping the rat will see a breakdown in ball movement purely due to that alternate player not being in position and we end up missing a link man.

It may sound weird, but what I have seen of Davis this year to me makes him look like a handy link up player in the making. How he would play the wing itself I don't know but his tutelage under Lynch seems to have him running good patterns and reading the play better than ever.

This post blew up bigger than it was meant to be but I used to be on board the drop rat train, but having seen very capable players in their own positions struggle in thatthe wing role leads me to think we are waiting on the development of a Scholl/Hamill/McPherson type to fill that gap.

Tdlr: Running patterns and other bullshit is a big factor in rat's continued selection.

If Gibbs got dropped for lack of defensive effort.. why do we think he has the discipline to play a lock down like that which would be such a key part of our plans?
Because of yesterday

From what I noticed(mainly in the 1st quarter) he was around half back/pushing up the wing. He combined some nice moves with Butts which bodes well for our defence going forward. What I liked most of all though was his side step and good decision making which is why I'd love to see him push Atkins out of his spot.

Hartigan has to come back in, we are going to need him against GWS talls.
100%.
If we make the required changes there’s no reason we can’t match them. Our defence works when we have the three talls, Brown, Laird and Smith.
Midfield will be the key, can ROB get on top of Mumford (who looks cooked) and give the Crouch brothers, CEY and Greenwood first use?
Can we kick a winning score with Tex offering nothing? Basically need Jenkins, Betts and Lynch to start kicking more and bring in someone for Murphy.
