At least Mackay is finally out, but dropping Greenwood makes no sense.

I can see how they can justify bringing Douglas back in based on SANFL form but there's really no need to have him play at AFL level at this point.
Dont be stupid... mookay will be a late in for sloane... campo will convince everyone its a “like for like” replacement.. you know... same, same, but different!

I see your point mate, but I also don't care about Carlton.

There were rumours about his personal issues - if they AFC weren't aware of them, it is pathetic; if they were aware of them, and still made the trade they did, then they're incompetent and stupid.
It's not an easy position to be in. I'm sure Gibbs told everyone all the right things, but addictions are pricks of a thing. You can get them under control, maybe he did have it under control and just like that you can slip and you're back in it.

I don't get the decision making behind backing in Jones earlier but now selecting Douglas.

Are we developing youth or selecting senior players in a desperate attempt to make finals?

The flip flop is just strange

The lack of consistency makes it obvious we don't have a clear plan here.

Remember a couple of years ago Fagan told us (or everyone?) that there was a strategic plan and vision for the AFC - and I thought it was going to be published?

Did that ever happen?

Greenwood gives us one too many inside bulls, he was the most out of form so he goes out. Plus I reckon he was gassed after last week like a lot of them.

Reckon he's a monty for next week.
Hart just said can’t see him playing up forward for the whole game, whereas Douglas can. Who would you have up forward?

Maybe I wouldn't have brought Douglas in but I don't know if you watched the SANFL game or not....Douglas was absolutely dominant on the weekend.

In Europe mate, don't see the SANFL, but I also don't consider it relevant for someone like Douglas.

He should absolute dominate the SANFL - he is an experienced, AFL conditioned footballer; who was quality in his prime...

If he doesn't, he's finished; if he does, so what? He should, and it doesn't mean he'll the same at AFL level (and hasn't, for a long time).

If Gibbs has that "problem" and it's not a recent development, how'd he keep it from the Crows?
Somebody didn't look into the closet door.
Like I said, they were likely aware, Reid was his manager after all and would know him very well. Gibbs could have also had his issues under control at the time. Addictions don't have a magic cure and it's suddenly gone, it'll be something he has to work on and with for the rest of his life most likely.

I can't say I would ignore the welfare of a player if they thought coming home would help them get their life in order. There's always a human element to consider.

Have you watched Stengle in the SANFL? He kicks goals, but he is in no way going to replace what they keep Murphy in the team for at the moment.

We paid two first rounders for it. We're not a charity and player welfare can be damned in comparison.

6 out of 11 isn't that impressive.

Wilson deserves an opportunity, he's been one of our best SANFL players for years. Why do we draft these guys if we aren't going to give them a chance at a bloody career?

McHenry, agree completely mate.

6/11 is actually quite impressive for a first year player, even in a non performance role. The vast majority at all clubs play 0.

Wilson does not deserve a chance because of his SANFL form. That means absolutely nothing. You draft them because maybe they'll round some things out which could see them become an AFL piece in a professional environment. Like Beech before and the vast majority of performing SANFL players, this one didn't.

Greenwood out surely has to mean rested. Has been one of our best midfielders this year.

Not sure about dougy in regardless of sanfl form. Was hoping we'd gone past that.

Mackay out excites me.

Gibbs out is just plain bizarre. Huge mystery since he rocked up last year.

Looks like Kelly is now entrenched in our 22 if he's still getting a game.

Pretty uninspiring but I didn't expect a lot. We're in pretty good shape health wise. Now we just need to learn how to play footy again.

Adelaide Selection Policy. :drunk:

giphy.gif

Selectors have lost the plot, there’s literally no system at all anymore at the selection table, at least prior to this year there was a system, it was a backwards, rigid, non-trusting, crazy ‘continuity’ over actual performance system but it was a system. Now it just seems like a list of random players who are more easily able to be dropped for weaker reasons and a group that are very safe due to weird unmeasurable qualities that the match committee is going on by ‘feel’.

Does the selection of Douglas mean the club still thinks it's a premiership chance. Maybe they need to watch the 2017 GF replay.

This is madness.

If anyone wants to know the absolute pinnacle of being a momentum killer on a football field is, Richard Douglas’ first quarter of the 2017 GF as painful as it is to re-watch should be reviewed by anyone who ever refers to him as a ‘class’ player.

I see your point mate, but I also don't care about Carlton.

There were rumours about his personal issues - if they AFC weren't aware of them, it is pathetic; if they were aware of them, and still made the trade they did, then they're incompetent and stupid.
If we didn’t trade for him you’d still be banging on about it. He was also good for us last year.

It's certainly not a black and white situation and i'm not advocating for trading for someone just to be good blokes. His form last year would suggest it's something that was not an issue for him. This year has been completely different.

Keeping Murphy and Atkins in after our game is just incredibly dumb. But we are Adelaide, winning isnt everything.
It is and these selections show it
I actually like the selections !

I can see Gibbs coming in for Sloane

Greenwood has been poor for 3 weeks and finally played 40 mins toward end of melb game , hasn’t covered ground well in defence and not a good idea to play him 3 games in 12 days

Yes I’d play him against Richmond regardless
I agree Greenwood has been down a little , I also agree his fitness base is terrible for a midfielder

But

I’m not sure why people are melting down about this. McRouch comes in for Gibbs, Douglas in for Greenwood to combat the speed of GWS
Its a sad state of affairs if Dougy and speed are mentioned together. Great servant , great clubman but if Douglas is replacing Greenwood in the midfield then we are cooked
Lol, what is the gain in dropping Greenwood and bringing in Douglas?

Douglas showed at the start of the season that he's completely lost all the speed he did have and now his brain fades are even more prominent. Greenwood would be faster than him, is taller, better overhead, better in close and a better tackler. It makes no sense.

Dropping Greenwood in isolation is ok. Its , if it happens, the use of Douglas as his midfield replacement. Or is it Crouch?

Douglas played well in SANFL so reward effort, but he should be considered a small forward and occassional mid. So my thinking is Murphy should have gone for Douglas.

And to explain the BUT above. Greenwood can also play a forward role in place of Murphy. Taller, contested mark and can play limited minutes in the centre.

So in that sense I dont understand the thinking.

So Ben Hart has just said Douglas will play up forward, so again i ask who is the better forward, Douglas or Greenwood who can actually mark, something we can’t do up forward.
I must have missed where Hugh dominated up forward this year. I think he’s best 22 most of the year, but his form has been just ok. I can’t imagine he will be out for long anyway.

I can't say I would ignore the welfare of a player if they thought coming home would help them get their life in order. There's always a human element to consider.

Have you watched Stengle in the SANFL? He kicks goals, but he is in no way going to replace what they keep Murphy in the team for at the moment.
yep kicks goals....and nearly as many points....SANFL scoring accuracy currently 54%

Atkins lucky but i can see why.... they wanted more pace. We don't have a load of outside players. If he was out mackay would likely stay in so it could be worse
Gibbs unlucky think we will need to tag someone and he was good last week at it. Douglas probably offers something similar though. Haven't lost much if any but would rather play gibbs
Greenwood will probably play for sloane i wouldn't drop him but they are obviously concerned about too many inside mids.
Mackay for hartigan tick
Crouch in tick
Murphy stays in due to his forward pressure. Needs to be more involved than last week

So Ben Hart has just said Douglas will play up forward, so again i ask who is the better forward, Douglas or Greenwood who can actually mark, something we can’t do up forward.

Greenwood should be in the team. To me he offers an x factor that bassically no one else in the team does.

Douglas position is really a position for a young player to get them into AFL footy. It is embarrassing we are virtually rushing back a 32 year old solid contributer. We really don't rate our talent at SANFL level.
