Thought nelson was good. I think he's at a point where WAFL wont improve his development. I think either ellis should make way for jetta and butler for hutch. Have jetta provide run out of defence.

I would like Jetta to play in the WAFL

A re-torn calf can take six weeks ....we can't take risks

Yeah but apparnetly his been wrapped in cotton wool for a while. we really need his run against hawks tho.

Yes and no ...we need his sublime kicking skills more ...we kicked poorly today at times.

Don't want to risk a long term injury .....next week will be a pressured game and I'm not sure it's the best game to make his return

yeah i still believe he might be what we need. If he gets attention on him, then someone else well be free to step up.

It's a bad problem to have but hopefully being premiership quality its a tough choice which is where it should be.

Not sure Bennell can be dropped, played well obviously Jetta is a better player but based on form it cant be Jetta, personally i was surprised to an extent that he was picked but I'm happy to have egg on my face.

IMO it will come from the pool of;

Nelson, Live I didn't notice him much, got involved physically but didn't see him have much influence, could wrong from a televised POV. I have massive wraps on him and think he will be a gun albeit potentially underrated but can afford a game or two in the 2s when he isn't up and about.

Butler, One of my favourite players, but think he will be better for being rested for a game or two especially when we travel, did nothing wrong but he is a smart player who we need at least the option of selecting come September.

Ellis, very similar to Butler, not a favourite of my mine, but smart composed, accurate by foot and has big game experience. Need him fresh as a daisy come the end of the year.

IMO 2/3 would be "luxury restings" which shouldn't be needed this early. Unfortunately of the 3 I would go Nelson, its a tough call, but competition for spots is a great "problem" to have.

He won't gain anything in the WAFL and the derby will be just as tough in r3 so unless you want to leave him out to r5 (since r4 is also a tough game) may as well play him if fit.

Yep thats fine. But I want him to dominate the same way Priddis does every week. Without Priddis was are pretty weak in the middle.

The only game I can think of where we didnt have priddis was the final against hawthorn last year.

Correct, you can't leave a player of Jetta's ilk/tendancies "free" if he plays the Hawks will have to send someone to him with primarily defensive mind set as they know from the 2012 GF. Jetta is a potential game winner from 15 touches if he gets off the hook, if you make the 15 touches all contested/under high pressure his impact can be significantly nullified.

If someone takes him, it leaves a Redden/LeCras/Duggan/Yeo more space to impact.

I was mostly thinking of a shep or hurn to provide more defensive run if jetta gets tagged.

I think the key point is that someone gets more space. Until Gaff stepped up last year we only had 1 mid that drew attention. With Gaff it became two, with Jetta it is now three.

That benefits all the mids.

Both viable options, will depend on where Jetta plays, if off halfback, then yes it will be one of the two you mentioned to become the beneficiaries. I tend to think he will play more off a wing so our "lower" tier mids will free up. Shuey, Priddis and Gaff will cop attention regardless every week. At the end of the day wherever Jetta plays, someone will be free'd up which is good for us.

Yeah will be interesting. Hopefully everyone who plays next week (even the one who didn't play in the GF) come out breathing fire. I think as a collective group we let the team down defensively today. Hopefully this will be addressed this week.

Provided Jetta is properly fit he comes in. Nobody else has earnt a promotion to the seniors

One of nelson, Ellis or butler comes out. No idea at this stage which of those 3 it will or should be

Bennell I believe played well enough to hold his spot but his lack of physicality may count against him in the eyes of the match committee so he could be the unlucky one

I think we will learn a lot from next week. Simmo strikes me as the type of guy to hold a grudge, I would expect an unrelenting aggression next week and even if we dont win, the way in which we play will set the tone for the rest of the season. As long as we dont roll over, it won't be the end of the world, addressing the deficiencies which cost us the GF last year will be important.

Yeah this will be game that will define our season. win and and we got the belief to go to sydney, geelong and win away from home against tough opposition. Like you said, a close loss might even work wonders for us. If we improve our defensive pressure and get our hands on the footy first, we should be good enough to beat hawks. Our forward line is way too good for their defence now that lake is gone and if i was simmo, i might even chuck mcgovern forward for majority of the game just to stretch their defence. Also their forwardline (especially talls wise) isnt that threatening. Tho defensive pressure and contested ball are keys to this. I think Hutchings would be a nice inclusion as he is another bull in and around the contest.

In: Jetta, Hutchings
Out: Bennell, Nelson

I liked the look of Bennell up forward more than I thought I would but still think Jetta and Hill are miles ahead. Not sure how we fit everyone if we keep Bennell on the list as well. Possible given Jetta and Hill might both rotate out of the forward line but still think unlikely. Not sure if Bennell as a possible defender (with Wellers out) impacts his selection - could be a positive or a negative thing (leaning negative slightly myself).

I like Nelson but not sure he is ready for big games like the Hawks yet. Keep Ellis because he is a little more versatile. Keep Butler over both Ellis and Nelson because he is a better kick, more accountable defender, and performed far better up against Hawthorn (and other big games) last year. What we really need though is another Wellingham. Cole perhaps (next year I am talking)? I've gone a bit cold on the idea of Jetta playing off half back, but maybe that's the best short-term solution for us?

Ideally, come the end of the year, do we want Nelson to be taking Ellis' spot? Probably.

There will be big games come the end of the year. Why not blood Nelson in them now?

Bennell out? Really?

Do you just want him out so you can continue to hate him?
The way a player gets better is by playing consistently in a side, and being able to adapt to the team and learn.

He was in our top 5 today IMO given the role he was playing and where he's come from in terms of expectations.

There is no way your whipping boy gets dropped after the game he produced. Jetta doesn't even fill the role Bennell played, and we don't have an obvious replacement.

A half back like Ellis/Butler/Nelson is more likely to go IF Jetta is 100%, as we have depth in that area, and Jetta play defensive.

Otherwise there are no changes.

Get your point I just think round 2 is a bit early for someone who didn't play many big games last year. Ideally I think we need Nelson, Butler and Ellis all fired up come finals time even though they are unlikely to all play. Just feel Butler and Ellis are more solid options (at this point in time) for a big game at the MCG against the Hawks. Think we can win that game and the risk of Nelson making critical mistakes might be higher than the other two. Against any other team I probably wouldn't care. If Wellers was available then I wouldn't have Nelson or Ellis in the team btw.

In: Jetta
Out: Geez who knows, my pick would be Ellis but I think Nelson is more likely

B: Sheppard, MacKenzie, McGovern
HB: Hurn, Schofield, Butler
C: Gaff, Priddis, Jetta
HF: LeCras, Darling, Cripps
F: Hill, Kennedy, Lycett
R: Naitanui, Shuey, Yeo
I: Ellis, Redden, Duggan, Bennell
E: Nelson (standby), McInnes, Hutchings

Who is this directed at? If it is me, I want to be clear I certainly don't dislike Bennell. I think he is next in line as a general forward after LeCras, Cripps, and Hill. Him not being selected would not be about form but more about structure. I thought today we were way too offensively weighted and our team defence structures suffered as a consequence. Against a better team (eg Hawks) I think we may have struggled. If you play 6 forwards and have JK, Darling, LeCras, Cripps and Hill that only leaves one more spot (this also assumes Gov is playing back). You need at least one, preferably two high half forwards that can come up and impact in the middle and further down the ground as link ups. Darling and LeCras seemed to be that today. But if Jetta was playing then Jetta, Yeo or Duggan might play that role. It all gets very crowded if you also add Bennell in that list (who doesn't have the advantage of being a pinch hitting midfielder like the others).

An option might be to drop Cripps or Hill but these guys proved themselves week in, week out last year with scoreboard pressure (30-40 goals), elite forward pressure (that team defensive structure we need) and both seem to be pinch hitting as mids this year. I'm not sure the advantages of adding Bennell offset the disadvantages of losing who he displaces with Jetta coming back in, as our forward line is pretty potent regardless. It's hard because I agree he deserves a spot given his performance was pretty good today. Maybe we don't need to bring in hutch, we keep Bennell, and we see how playing an extra forward plays out?
